This event will feature a series of brief talks by practitioners about innovative and open projects underway at a range of local institutions. Program: 8:30am-9:00am: Arrivals & Refreshments 9:00am-9:25am: Welcome & Introductions * Speaker: Elder Rose Nahanee 9:25am-10:25am: Speaker Sessions * Using Scrum to Support Student Learning in an Open Ed course at Capilano Speaker: Laurie Prange-Martin (Instructor, School of Business) Description: One of the biggest challenges for faculty making the switch to Open Ed resources is the loss of the time-saving devices available from publishers, especially test banks and slide decks. Supporting the switch to Open Ed also requires the preparation of assessments, usually project-based, and active in-class learning. Learn to make project-based learning and in-class activities work using the Scrum project management method. * Open Pedagogy in Trades Classroom Teaching at BCIT Speaker: Chad Flinn (Instructor, Electrical Trades and Entrepreneurship for the Trades. Author: The Electric Academy) Description: Chad shares how he uses Open educational practices and Open educational resources in his own teaching as a vocational instructor at BCIT. Throughout the past two years, Chad has experienced a shift in mindset that involves bringing the students into the process of co-creation of resources and shares how it has transformed his teaching practice. * Kwantlen Psychology Student Journal Speaker: Arleigh Reichl (Instructor, Department of Psychology) Description: This talk will cover two open education projects promoting student (and faculty) learning. The first is a student-faculty collaboration to create an open access, online journal publishing the work of KPU Psychology students. The second is the inclusion of an international video competition as a course assignment – with some amazing results. 10:25am-10:45am: Break & Refreshments 10:45am-11:45am: Speaker Sessions * From Adopting to Adapting: the Role of Pressbooks at Langara College Speaker: Julian Prior (Chair of Educational Technology and Open Langara) Description: Langara is one of the largest adopters of open textbooks in BC post-secondary education. Recently we are seeing more interest from instructors in adapting and creating open textbooks. This talk will discuss the role that the online authoring and publishing platform Pressbooks has played in this transition. * Using OJS for SFU Course Journal Projects Speaker: Kate Shuttleworth (Community Scholars Librarian and Librarian, Digital Publishing) Description: Kate will share some examples of course journal projects at SFU Library which feature student work and involve students in the production of online, open access journals using Open Journal Systems. Students participate in the scholarly publishing workflow, work together to design and develop the journal, and showcase their written and multimedia assignments. * Practice Makes Perfect: Developing for and Using WeBWorK Open Online Homework in Engineering at UBC Speakers: Agnes d’Entremont (Senior Instructor, Mechanical Engineering) with students Warren Chan, Wan Fong and Tyler Leonizio Description: Practicing problem-solving is an essential part of learning in many engineering courses. WeBWorK is an open online homework system, primarily used in mathematics, which provides instant feedback on practice problems. Over three years, instructors at UBC have developed and deployed over 1000 WeBWorK problems across seven engineering departments.
