Please join us at this event to celebrate Open Education Week on Monday, March 1, 12:30-1:30
Wicked Problems and Open Remedies: A Student-Centred Approach
A wicked problem is one that is difficult or impossible to solve due to incomplete, contradictory, interconnected, or changing factors. A problem that requires a major change in practice, belief, or behaviour for many people is often a wicked problem. Drawing on this idea, we turn our attention to the wicked problem in higher education of empowering students in the classroom and centring student voices in exploring the challenges of and potential solutions for this problem. Arley Cruthers (Kwantlen) will moderate the session. Student panelists include Kristen Morgan (UBC Okanagan), Sophia Nguyen (Simon Fraser University [SFU]), and Caitlin Spreeuw (Douglas College). Open Education Week (March 1-5, 2021) is an annual global event that aims to "raise awareness and showcase the impact of open education on teaching and learning worldwide."

For the past several years UBC Library, the First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program, and event sponsors (see below) have organized the Honouring Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-thon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters>. This edit-a-thon event, inspired by Daniel Heath Justice’s<https://fnis.arts.ubc.ca/persons/daniel-justice/> Twitter campaign of the same name, seeks to bring community editors together to work on editing Wikipedia entries for Indigenous authors in an attempt to tackle the systemic bias of Wikipedia while also trying to raise the profile of Indigenous writers.
Instead of the annual in-person event this year the organizing team has put together a schedule of free events and Wikipedia-related activities designed for virtual participation throughout the month of March 2021. The events include:
* Author readings <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> by Smokii Sumac, Richard Van Camp, Tenille Campbell, Marilyn Dumont and more
* Self-paced Weekly Wikipedia Challenges <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/activities> with prize draws
* Wikipedia training and drop-in Zoom sessions<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events>
* <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> A panel discussion<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> from the UBC Vancouver Public Humanities Hub on Wikipedia as public scholarship
* And a social media campaign on Twitter<https://twitter.com/HIW_Wiki>
These events and activities are free and open to anyone to participate. Please join us at our kickoff event and reading with Smokii Sumac on February 24th at 7:00pm PST, and learn more about the other events we have planned! You can also read more at the HIW home page<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/>, and at the HIW Wikipedia Meetup Page<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters/U…>.
We would also appreciate your support of the event by helping to promote it through your listservs, social media accounts, and other spaces to help raise awareness of Indigenous literature and engage in open community knowledge creation.
The event team has developed a number of social media assets in a variety of sizes for ease of sharing. The assets can be downloaded here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JjUP3kuTsogRBLXv4HF7c281MXLu0x_y?us…
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and thank you in advance for any support you can give in making this event a success. Thank you to event sponsors, the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies<https://cis.arts.ubc.ca/>, Iron Dog Books<https://irondogbooks.com/>, BCcampus<https://bccampus.ca/>, and the UBC Bookstore<https://bookstore.ubc.ca/>.

Hello all,
Forwarding an event next week that may be of interest to you:
Open Art Histories: Three Views on Open Educational Resources
Friday, February 26, 10:00pm – 11:30pm PST
Description: Are you interested in what ArtxHistory.org founder Natalie Coletta describes as “rejecting the dominant language and scholarship that create a climate of elitism and exclusivity” in art history? Are you curious about using open educational resources (OERs) to do so? Join us for an afternoon of talks with three art historians leading the development of open access teaching materials that seek to challenge traditional textbook conventions. Leah Clark will share how Open Arts Objects, an open access platform providing free films inspires diverse audiences to understand art and visual culture while leading change in museum educational programmes and professional practice and increasing public awareness about a global approach to art history. Natalie Coletta founded the ArtxHistory portal as a means to decolonize academia, while serving students and teachers and addressing challenging topics in the areas of artistic practice, history, and critique of 20th and 21st century art. Smarthistory’s Dean of Content and Strategy, Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank will speak to how the resource’s free, award-winning digital content unlocks the expertise of hundreds of leading scholars making the history of art accessible and engaging to more people around the world.
Please note: This event is free, but registration is required<https://langara.zoom.us/meeting/register/u50lcOuqrjsrH9HEi0C0devRKYGVaRX0uP…>.

Hi all,
Has anyone hosted an open pedagogy/open assignment sprint? Cap is hosting an upcoming sprint with the goal of creating an assignment bank of open/reusable assignments and are wondering if anyone has some experience or tips to share.
Thanks!

Call for Interest: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Open Pedagogy Fellowship
Attn: BC Institutions of Higher Education
Are you interested in galvanizing support for Open Pedagogy at your institution?
Kwantlen Polytechnic University is looking for an institutional partner to join and grow an innovative, international, inter-institutional, inter-disciplinary Open Pedagogy Fellowship. Join KPU along with founding members at Montgomery Community College (Maryland, USA) as well as Maricopa Community Colleges (Arizona, USA) along with new partners in 2021 to help achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals<https://sdgs.un.org/goals> (SDGs) through student assignments!
This award-winning fellowship<https://awards.oeglobal.org/awards/2020/open-pedagogy/united-nations-sustai…> provides faculty with an opportunity to work with their colleagues and students to impact change through open pedagogy and community engagement. The conceptual framework for this fellowship is directed by the UN SDGs, which is a set of 17 goals that address a wide range of social issues, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and peace and justice. The SDGs are designed to achieve and maintain social justice and a sustainable future, with a target of the year 2030 set for the attainment of each goal.
In this fellowship, faculty will design renewable assignments that make progress toward accomplishing at least one SDG and help students become agents of change in their own communities.
At this time, KPU is looking for an institutional partner in British Columbia, and unfortunately, cannot support lone faculty members.
Institutional commitment will involve the following:
* Promoting the fellowship opportunity including putting out and managing a call for fellows
* Adjudicating fellowship applications
* Participating in the planning and facilitation of workshops and other training to support fellows
* Co-organizing a faculty-student showcase
If interested, please provide an expression of interest to open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca> by Friday, February 26, 2021 including the names and contact information for those who will join the leadership committee and a brief statement:
* confirming your intention to join the 2021 UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship with institutional support and capacity
* outlining your institution’s current engagement with open pedagogy
* describing how the fellowship might help the stakeholders at your institution and how your institution might enrich the fellowship
For more information, please see www.kpu.ca/open/un-sdg-fellowship<http://www.kpu.ca/open/un-sdg-fellowship>. If you have any questions, please reach out to Urooj Nizami, Open Education Strategist, at urooj.nizami(a)kpu.ca<mailto:urooj.nizami@kpu.ca>.
