Hello all,
It was great to see so many of you at the BCOEL lunch at the Cascadia Open Ed Summit last week! During our roundtable, I mentioned that my colleague Dan Slessor recently visualized Langara’s open textbook adoption data in Tableau. Here is a link<https://public.tableau.com/profile/langaralibrary#!/vizhome/OpenLangara/Ove…> if you’re curious to see what it looks like. It is based on the data we collect in collaboration with Lauri Aesoph at BCcampus.
Last month, Langara’s Communications & Marketing Department developed branding for our open ed committee, Open Langara. Dan worked the branding into the visualization. We’re hoping it will help communicate the impact of open textbooks, and open ed more broadly, to senior leadership and the wider Langara community.
If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to be in touch!
All the best,
-Lindsay

Hello,
Brenda and I were able to have a phone meeting yesterday. This is what we came up with:
Cascadia BCOEL lunch meeting in room 1400. We will be informal but could have a round table and discuss whether we want to have an in-person working meeting in the summer (June-Aug.). We may have some new people joining us so perhaps we could talk about how the group functions and answer their questions.
Next meeting - does the week of May 13 work?
Agenda items:
* we need a Chair-elect to start 2 year term in September - Chair-elect (and meeting minute-taker) Sep.-Aug. 2019/20 and Chair Sep.-Aug. 2020/21
* update on our working groups
* summer in-person working meeting planning (if we are going to have one)
Let us know if you have anything else you would like to change or add.
See you next week!

Hi Everyone,
I was going to send a message to BCcampus asking if we could have a space for lunch for BCOEL to meet during Cascadia. Or do you think we should schedule a meeting Thursday afternoon, since it seems to end at lunchtime? What do you all think?
Thanks,
Brenda
Do you think this is something that the BCOEL Steering Committee might want to put together? Maybe something about how established groups are moving forward and evolving? After all, we’re no longer trying to wrap our heads around what the 5Rs mean and introduce people to OER.

[Cascadia Open Education Summit logo]
Dear Karen Meijer-Kline,
Thank you for submitting a proposal to present at the Cascadia Open Education Summit in Vancouver, B.C., April 17-18, 2019.
The response to our Call for Proposals was very strong (over 70 proposals for 29 slots), and we are grateful to all our colleagues who took the time to submit a proposal.
All proposals have now been reviewed and I am writing to advise you that your proposal was not accepted by the program committee for this event.
Thank you again for taking the time to submit a proposal, and we hope to see you at the Cascadia Open Education Summit.

Hi All,
I know we are all busy with Open Education Week events at our home institutions but I would like to invite folks to the following event.
Best,

Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-athon
Date/Time: March 4, 1-4 pm
Location: First Nations Longhouse, UBC-Vancouver Campus
Cost : Free! There will be author readings, refreshments, and door prizes
Register: http://bit.ly/2X2mV0m <https://t.co/C5HVFb3vx4>
In December 2015 Daniel Heath Justice<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Heath_Justice> (author of “Why Indigenous Literature Matters<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Heath_Justice#Why_Indigenous_Literat…>") began a Twitter campaign to share the names of Indigenous writers. The reason for his efforts was to “...push back against the frequent assumptions that our literary history is any less complex, robust, or diverse than that of other peoples.”[1]<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Vancouver/Indigenous_Liter…>
So why a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon?
Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free encyclopedia based on a model of open community generated knowledge. The community driven nature of Wikipedia is meant to support Wikipedia’s goal of providing “…every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge.”[2]<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Vancouver/Indigenous_Liter…> However, well documented systematic bias including, information gaps, exclusions, diversity of articles and editors, and assumptions about neutrality and notability greatly impacts the information that can be found in an information source with millions of views per day.
The Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is seeking to improve the coverage of Indigenous writers on Wikipedia and to encourage diverse community editors to actively work to dissuade assumptions about Indigenous literature by raising their profile in this increasingly influential information source.

Hi all,
The PD working group members have a draft of the Cascadia Open Summit proposal available for feedback:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ra-PlH3gkohzhveu6MSq5rhWxnbAuOMHAThoJ3K…
Please feel free to add comments or send them via email. (We're still looking for a title!)
I just saw that the deadline has been extended to February 1, so if you send your feedback by Wednesday 30th I can send it in on the 31st. (I'm away on the 1st)
Also, provided the timing works out re: other sessions you might be presenting in, who would be willing to be a part of this roundtable session?
Cheers,
Karen
Hi everyone,
Something has come up and I can't attend the OER Jumpstart meeting today. Is anyone else attending, either in person in Toronto or virtually? If so, would you mind letting me know what happens in the meeting?
Thanks,

Hi, all.
Was there ever a generic BCOER google account created? If so, can the keeper of the credentials contact me?
If not, I will set one up so I can set up the Google channel.
Thanks.

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Monday, 14 January. I've attached the agenda for the meeting to this email. I have also attached a copy of Josie's email re: taxonomy of Open Textbooks so we can discuss that, too.
The meeting will be from 9 until 3:45ish. It will be held in Room 551, BCIT Downtown Campus, 555 Seymour Street, Vancouver. Lin says that coffee and tea will be ready at 8am, so if you arrive early, don't be afraid to come up early. Lunch will also be provided.
Reminder to please bring your own laptop and devices, and have them set up for EDUOROAM if you can.
According to Lin my records, here is who is planning to attend: Martin, Rosario, Darcye, Lindsay, Erin, Stephanie, Caroline, Hope, Brenda, Lin, Debra, Karen, Lauri, and Chantel (spelling). Please let me know if we're missing anyone. For those of you who can't attend, stay tuned for Lin's fabulous notes about what we accomplish.
Jonas has expressed interest in joining us remotely, so we hope to have some sort of remote access to, for those of you who aren't able to attend. Jonas - do you plan to join us for the whole day, or just for certain parts?
I will be out of the office tomorrow because my husband and I decided to drive down that day due to weather forecast for the the Coquihalla (yay winter driving in the mountains!).
See you Monday!
Brenda

Hi All – I’m barely coming up from the weeds of this term but wanted to touchbase with everyone. I recall seeing an email about an in-person meeting but can’t seem to find the date. Can you let me know the logistics?

Hi all,
Here is a link to the new BCOEL Steering Committee site, which replaced the wikipage.
https://oet.sandcats.io/shared/1yf6D_rg1gZIz4mYKGFdvC49-55Kh2ZFRSFr4svAgZr
Quick update on what's been done to the site so far:
* Content transferred from old wiki page to new site
* Each wiki page became a new 'post' on a blog style website
* To organize the information more clearly, categories were added to each post (ie. meeting minutes, projects, archives). Each category has a subsequent page in the top menu where relevant posts can be found.
* The posts for 'About BCOEL Steering Committee' and 'Frame of Reference' were pinned to the website's home page to act as a landing page.
Things to consider while viewing the site:
* Each working group has a page that simply lists members. How do working groups want to use their page? (each group can decide for themselves)
* At the moment, the 'projects' page is tagged with all past projects. Some of these posts are also tagged under 'archives'.
o Should any of these posts be tagged under 'resources' instead of 'projects'?
o Or perhaps the final product be added as a resource?
* Do you have other resources you'd like to add to the resources page (PowerPoint presentations, handouts, etc.)?
* Do any of the 'projects'/'resources' need to be updated?
* Are there any posts that should be tagged with a working group?
Review the webpage and send me any updates, comments, questions. Simple updates (ie. punctuation) I can update right away. Organizational suggestions I'll gather together and we can discuss them at the face to face meeting in January.
Thank you everyone for your input.
Cheers,
Darcye
