Hi, all.
There is a UFV math faculty member very interested in completing an open textbook on calculus he started a couple of years ago. We've had a few conversations in the past, but he has had time constraints, as well as some uncertainties around recombining open licensed content that I haven't quite been able to alleviate yet. He also has a different pedagogical approach in mind, and one that he apparently cannot easily work into the existing BC Campus calculus texts. The details escape me, but it made a lot of sense to me as someone who never responded well to traditional approaches of teaching math.
So quite some time after starting and outlining from scratch, he has realised it will be more efficient to complete by incorporating existing content. And I now get the impression he is looking for some collaboration opportunities with others who have specifically worked with open math content.
Do any of you know of anyone actively using and revising math content?
Many thanks.

Subject: Please support the [ http://rightcopyright.eu/ | rightcopyright.eu ] campaign for Education
Dear Cable,
I hope you noticed on social media already; we at COMMUNIA have started the [ http://www.rightcopyright.eu/ | www.RightCopyright.eu ] campaign. We ask for public support for a better copyright for education. We hope you will help us reaching our goal of 5K signatories by May 15th. This will help us convince policymakers that we need a copyright that supports education, and not a copyright that holds back education.
You can help by:
1. Signing the petition at [ http://www.rightcopyright.eu/ | www.rightcopyright.eu ]
2. Sharing about the campaign on social media, newsletters and other outlets. Please find sample tweets in 10-12 European languages on the website: [ https://rightcopyright.eu/spread-the-word/ | https://rightcopyright.eu/spread-the-word/ ] - example: "You may not know it, but you are breaking the law. Help us change this: [ http://bit.ly/rightcpy | bit.ly/rightcpy ] ”
3. If you have suggestions of who to contact about how to reach an education-oriented / copyright oriented audience, please let me know.
Cheers,
Lisette Kalshoven

Subject: OpenStax, Rice University recruiting for business series authors/reviewers
Hello everyone,
I’m very excited to announce that we are in the beginning stages of recruiting for a business series!
All OpenStax, Rice University open source texts are expert-written, peer-reviewed, match standard scope and sequence, and meet the same quality standards as traditional publisher texts. Currently, our texts are used in over 10% of introductory courses in the U.S. (per [ http://www.onlinelearningsurvey.com/reports/openingthetextbook2016.pdf | 2016 Babson Survey ] ).
Faculty who author/contribute/peer-review the texts receive compensation (the contact below can provide details).
Can you please forward this to your faculty? Please ask faculty to reach-out to the contact listed for each book vs. emailing me, if they are interested.
Thank you so much!

Hello,
I've heard from Shawnna Parlongo again and she still wants to volunteer and unfortunately I forgot to include her for the training with the mediawiki refresher. We also need to discuss what we are specifically adding to the mediawiki so I thought we should ask her to join the Steering Committee and then she would be part of that discussion. So is it okay to just add people to the Steering Committee if they are committed to do work with our group?
Also, Karen Meijer-Kline, the Scholarly Communications Librarian at Kwantlen would like to join the BCOEL Steering Committee.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Hello all
Rajiv and I are working on a few things for Open Ed week. One of the things we hope to get done is some subject specific OER boxes for our libguides. Remember we were going to do this a long time ago ....I'm just not sure I'm hitting people with the general OER guide and so hope I can draw in a few more people by putting the box on the subject specific one.
I'm willing to put them in the wiki if others think they will benefit? We are going to use some student time to figure out our top 10 target areas at KPU. Then I'll build a short list of subject specific resources for each of those areas. I know there was a refresher on the mediawiki a week or so ago - I got stuck in a meeting but I also still use the wiki. Is there still interest in me putting them up there?
Maybe if there are others in the group that also have a top 10 list, we can collaborate and get more than 10 up on the wiki? Do you think we reinvigorate the wiki? I see it as one of the areas where we can really help with duplication in workloads! Yes? No?

Hi there everyone,
I have a request to make.... I have been invited to speak at the COPPUL meeting on March 2 in the afternoon. The attendance will include mostly Library Directors and Collection Committee reps, as well as some staff. The group is interested to hear about OER initiatives in Canada, what is happening in BC and the West and how libraries are coping with "open" especially from the perspective of data-sharing from the perspective of collections.
Because the Collections aspect is so well represented, I thought that it would be great if we could collect the perspectives of Collections Administrators at our libraries as they deal with "open" in a series of short videos. So here is my ask - any chance that you can engage some Collections folks at your respective libraries to do a short video that deals with their own experiences with open? These could be 1 or 2 minute videos and ideally I would get 3 to 5 pieces that I could integrate in my presentation.
My plan is that during my presentation, we could show the videos and have an open discussion about the issues that are brought up.
I know that Hope Power already said she was going to put the word out. Hope, I can't wait to hear from you! But if some of you could also engage your folks, that would be excellent.
Please let me know and I thank you in advance for your support.
Cheers,
