Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone here has ever heard of or maybe used SubjectsPlus?<https://subjectsplus.github.io/>
It's an open source tool for library website management and can be used to create research guides, staff lists, databases A-Z pages, etc.
A friend from library school mentioned it to me and I'm considering it for my library website. I'd love to hear any feedback you might have on it.
Thanks in advance,
Ali

Hi everyone,
I've just locked down a day/time for our Open Education Week event with Brenna Clarke Gray and Autumm Caines. Please save the date for Monday, March 4th from 11am-12pm PST.
I'm just waiting on a bio and photo from Autumm for the events page. We should have registration open by tomorrow or Monday.
Autumm's blog<https://autumm.edtech.fm/> has a number of widely cited posts about generative AI in the classroom, and how these new technologies are sometimes at odds with the shared values of the open education movement. Brenna and the event planning team will be developing questions for Autumm over the next week; feel free to email me with any burning questions you may have and we'll integrate them into the event. Or, you can save them for the Q&A period during the event 🙂
Thanks!

Hi y'all,
Following up on today's meeting, I mentioned that I'm on the lookout for
folks with interest in being on a panel talking about generative AI
adoption in their libraries at ALA 2024 in San Diego. Someone asked for the
blurb, so here it is:
*2022 and 2023 saw generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) make its way
into the public’s awareness in an unprecedented way when the companies
making text-to-image generation tools like Stable Diffusion and large
language models like ChatGPT made their tools available to the public. This
session will be a guided discussion between three panelists and a moderator
who will talk about how staff at libraries and their associated
institutions have approached GenAI, what the process looked like deciding
how to use it, and what impacts it has had on the library services they
provide.Due to the rapid pace of development and change in the field of
generative artificial intelligence, presenters will be chosen sooner to the
conference to ensure that the information given is both timely and
relevant. However, topics for discussion will touch on the the following:-
What guidance or policy governing GenAI use do their institutions have, and
what kinds of discussions have happened around the ethics of GenAI?- How
have GenAI tools impacted their day to day work, individually and
institutionally?- How are they approaching GenAI with communities they
serve? E.G. programming or workshops, technology offerings, or other
community-centered services.*
It'll get nailed down a bit more once I know who'll be on the panel, but
broadly the goal is to provide more of a "here's how it's going" discussion
rather than a more abstract discussion of AI in libraries. Speakers are
responsible for the cost of travel/lodging and attendance, but the
admission rate for presenters is USD$220.
If you're interested, drop me a line and a paragraph or two about what's
been going on at your library with AI! Sadly I can't bring everyone with
me, but I'll do my best to give fair consideration to everyone. Early
career (grad within 5 years), BIPOC, or 2SLGBTQIA+ librarians are
especially encouraged to reach out.
Thanks kindly,
Peter Musser (he/him)

Hello!
For our October BCOEL Meeting, we moved it from the second Monday (9th) to the third Monday (16th) because of Thanksgiving. However, I notice that Monday the 16th is the OE Global Conference and several of us will be attending and therefore unavailable.
I see three options:
1. Move it to Monday Oct 23
2. Move it to Tuesday Oct 10 (same time, 1-2pm)
3. Cancel it and wait until our next meeting (Nov 20)
Please vote in this StrawPoll by the end of next week (Friday Sept 22) so that I can make a decision and update everyone in time.

Thanks,
Amanda

Hello!
Here is a placeholder for BCOEL monthly meetings, which will be held on the second Monday of every month, except for October and November when they will be on the third Monday. This year, the meetings will be held over Zoom (links below).
The week before a meeting, I'll send out an official call for agenda items, but feel free to reach out anytime you have something specific you'd like us to discuss.
Looking forward to working with everyone this year!
Cheers,
Amanda

Hello!
I want to share this new article that was recently published by KPU faculty member Deirdre Maultsaid and TRU faculty member Michelle Harrison. This publication is the result of Deirdre’s year working with us as an Open Education Research Fellow and explores student perspectives on Open Pedagogy.
Can Open Pedagogy Encourage Care? Student Perspectives<https://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/6901>
Abstract: As a response to the increasing commercialization of postsecondary education, educators argue for a practice of care in education. Open pedagogy (OP) seems like an ideal practice where care, trust, and inclusion can be realized. OP is characterized as a democratic and collaborative pedagogical practice, in which students and teachers work to co-create learning and knowledge using openly licensed materials, open platforms, and other open processes. The purposes of this study were, first, to reveal ways students in postsecondary institutions perceive care and, second, to determine how students suggest OP can be used to create an open/caring learning process. A task-oriented focus group method engaged students from four teaching-focused institutions. The students created open cases on social issues for class discussion and reflected on care and OP processes in postsecondary settings. Using four elements of the ethics of care—attentiveness, responsibility, competence, and trustworthiness—as conceptual categories, the study examined students’ experience of care and care in OP using affective coding and thematic analysis. The results showed that through OP, with teacher support and explicitly designed practices of care, students can assert their agency, have quintessential roles in creating and participating in highly relevant curriculum and importantly, care about others, and be cared for. OP is a process able to involve a diverse population of students and embody care as an all-encompassing practice.

Hello (again)!
Would anyone be interested in Arianna’s suggestion below to write a blog post for the BCcampus website for Open Access Week?
Cheers,
Amanda

Hi Amanda,
That's no problem. We just thought we would ask and make the offer.
If someone at BCOEL is interested, you could write a guest blog post for the BCcampus website pertaining to Open Access Week. This was a suggestion by our MarComm team. This blog post could then be promoted in our newsletter published on October 18, so the turnaround time would probably be less than a month.
Is there any interest in this? It's okay if not: we just wanted to reach out.
Thanks,

Hi Arianna,
Unfortunately, we didn’t discuss a potential OA Week event at our meeting on Monday, and I don’t think we’ll be meeting soon enough to pull something off in time.
I’ll make a note to discuss OA week events during our June meeting and get the ball rolling earlier.
Thanks,
Amanda

Hi Amanda,
I hope you're doing well! How is the start of the fall semester?
I am reaching out to see if BCOEL has any events planned for Open Access Week 2023<https://www.openaccessweek.org/theme/en> that you would like to add to the BCcampus Events Calendar. If you pass them to me, I will make sure they get on the calendar.
Best,

Hi everyone,
I looked into the Zoom meeting settings and found that KPU IT has locked the setting that requires used to sign into Zoom before joining a meeting. Since everyone seemed to be able to join on Monday, I’m going to proceed with the assumption that we can continue using Zoom. If anyone has an issue with this, please let me know and I will reschedule the meetings through Teams.
Thanks,
Amanda

Hi everyone,
Hope you’ve all had a great summer! I’m both nervous and excited to be the new 2023/2024 BCOEL Chair. Please don’t hesitate to provide me with feedback if there’s something that I’m doing that isn’t working for the group.
Attached is the tentative agenda for our upcoming Monday meeting. If anyone has agenda items to add, please send them along before Friday Sept 8.
See you next week!
Amanda
