As part of this work, she delivered recommendations to BCcampus about how to improve the findability of OER within the library community. She has asked to share these with us at next week's meeting.
Also, Donna is taking a well-deserved vacation day on March 22. Could I ask for a volunteer to record the minutes? I can provide a template to make things easier.

Specifically, Kony would like to have these documents translated into French and is hoping we can provide the original files (.docx, .pptx).

Hi everyone,
For a long time now I’ve wanted us to share what resources we use just as OpenOregon<https://openoregon.org/resources/> does and I specifically asked that and Mary Burgess said that it was a privacy issue. I would find it invaluable to know if someone at another institution is using an OER/library ebook for their course.
Until we can do something like Oregon, perhaps we can figure out a way that we can share a spreadsheet with each other that would just indicates the course and the specific resource used and then at least we can contact each other for more details.
I’d be happy to work on this with anyone who would like to see this happen as well.

Thus far these lists have not been made public, though we at BCcampus have talked about if this should be done, how the adopting faculty/institutions would feel about it, and what would be the best way to share/display this information (and what would need to be done at our end technically) if this was done.

CapU open education faculty fellows are working with their departments (Kinesiology, STEM, Communications, Psychology) to identify potential open educational resources for key courses in their programs.
Are the lists each of us send to BCcampus for tracking open textbooks publicly available? Has anyone used another institution's list to cross-reference what courses at their institution might use the same resources? Other institution's lists could also help convince departments that are hesitant to using OER, if another BC institution's related faculty are using OER.
Would anyone be willing to share their list? Do we think these documents have a place on the BCOEL OER Commons group (updated once a year)? Some people cite privacy issues with sharing faculty names, but those could be redacted.
Interested to hear people's thoughts and if anyone is willing to share their institution's open resources tracking documents. If people are already doing this, even better!

Hello all,
As I mentioned during our last meeting, I approached CPSLD (the association representing post-secondary library directors in B.C.) in February about collaborating with BCOEL on copyright advocacy efforts. Last week CPSLD confirmed that they were keen to jointly author a submission regarding implementation of the copyright term extension.
Under CUSMA (the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement, or 'new NAFTA') the term of copyright in Canada will be extended from life of the creator +50 years, to life +70. This will have a great impact on open educational practice, and higher education more broadly. The government gave stakeholders just one month to submit comments on how the extension should be implemented. The due date for submissions is tomorrow, March 12. The educational sector asked for an extension, but the request was denied by the departments leading the consultation process, Heritage Canada and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).
Over the past week, I worked with Darcye to draft the CPSLD/BCOEL submission. It received approval from Trish Rosseel, CPSLD Chair and Director, Learning Resources & Records Management at Douglas College, and one of the association's members who works closely with copyright. It's now with the general CPSLD membership for further comment.
We'd also like to invite members of the BCOEL Steering Committee to review the draft and provide feedback (by noon tomorrow, if possible). Please feel free to insert your comments directly in the Google Doc<https://docs.google.com/document/d/110lw-5xu99Jju6vOl7HeUWKgZofsiclnFR-eyOE…>.
We apologize for the quick turnaround, but there were lots of moving parts. The process has been very collaborative, with lots of information sharing and fruitful discussion amongst PSI copyright specialists, higher ed administrators, and professional associations representing PSIs and libraries. In particular, there was debate about whether an 'opt in' registration system for the additional 20 years of copyright protection is feasible in the context of Canada's obligations under various international copyright treaties.
The approach we ultimately suggested aligns with College and Institutes Canada (CICan) and has been endorsed by a number of legal experts/scholars in Canada, including Michael Geist, Howard Knopf, and Meera Nair. A similar model was also proposed the by former Director of the U.S. Copyright Office back in 2013.

I think it is a great idea to share such data as well Darcye and while unfortunately, I have nothing to offer in terms of sharing back, I would find great benefit in knowing what others are using, as it could significantly help with advocacy and speed up helping others find relevant resources.
It would be amazing if this could be an open database ☺ a project for one day…
While I understand the privacy considerations, I think it is also valuable to know if certain faculty are ok with their names being shared, as this can serve as an extra piece of persuasion for the academic community who might ‘know’ the faculty using OER – it is like a behavioural nudge, if you know that someone you respect is doing this type of work, you might be more likely to do the same. What I want to say is, if a person is comfortable with their name being shared, it may increase the success of advocacy and give credibility to the efforts.

Thank you, Lauri and Debra, for the additional information and links you sent. The Open Oregon link is helpful, but even if we don't have the capacity to do something so formal in BC, I really see the value in sharing the information even within this group. I reviewed the individual institution's blogs and websites, but unfortunately the information tends to be fragmented or missing as the posts serve a different purpose.
One of the number one reasons faculty cite for not adopting OER is the time it takes to find the right materials. We may be able to cut down on that time for some courses by sharing what other related courses are using (we can redact faculty names if need be).
I know we are all very busy right now, so perhaps we can discuss this at our next meeting on March 22. If anyone is willing to share their information before then, it would be much appreciated (no pressure though). At Cap we have a student research assistant collecting our stats right now, but once the document is complete I can share it with anyone who is interested.

CapU open education faculty fellows are working with their departments (Kinesiology, STEM, Communications, Psychology) to identify potential open educational resources for key courses in their programs.
Are the lists each of us send to BCcampus for tracking open textbooks publicly available? Has anyone used another institution's list to cross-reference what courses at their institution might use the same resources? Other institution's lists could also help convince departments that are hesitant to using OER, if another BC institution's related faculty are using OER.
Would anyone be willing to share their list? Do we think these documents have a place on the BCOEL OER Commons group (updated once a year)? Some people cite privacy issues with sharing faculty names, but those could be redacted.
Interested to hear people's thoughts and if anyone is willing to share their institution's open resources tracking documents. If people are already doing this, even better!

Hi all,
So Senate had a "lively" discussion about VitalSource yesterday. I was unable to watch because I had another commitment, but apparently the VP Finance spoke and apologized multiple times for the lack of consultation and how the announcement was written. He has said that a full committee with students, faculty, and staff will be established to have a consultative process to look at textbook affordability. So, it looks like it's at least on hold.

For the past several years UBC Library, the First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program, and event sponsors (see below) have organized the Honouring Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-thon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters>. This edit-a-thon event, inspired by Daniel Heath Justice’s<https://fnis.arts.ubc.ca/persons/daniel-justice/> Twitter campaign of the same name, seeks to bring community editors together to work on editing Wikipedia entries for Indigenous authors in an attempt to tackle the systemic bias of Wikipedia while also trying to raise the profile of Indigenous writers.
Instead of the annual in-person event this year the organizing team has put together a schedule of free events and Wikipedia-related activities designed for virtual participation throughout the month of March 2021. The events include:

In follow up to the discussion regarding copyright advocacy at our last meeting, I'm attaching the letter (in French and English) authored by CFLA-FCAB and CARL-ABRC. Annette DeFaveri circulated it on the BCLA listserv on Dec 1, 2020 on behalf of Rebecca Raven, Executive Director CFLA-FCAB, with the following note:
"The Copyright Committee of CFLA-FCAB has been busy advocating with our federal government to modernize and improve access to government information. A recent letter regarding Crown Copyright shared with Cabinet Ministers and MPs (attached) has had a positive response and we are encouraged by the number of follow up conversations we had scheduled as a result of the communique. We wanted to give you a heads up that next steps for the Committee include communication with provincial governments to inform and gain support. Member associations will be copied on the relevant letters for their jurisdictions."
I'll keep you posted on future correspondence with CPSLD about this.

At our last BCOEL steering committee meeting, I briefly shared about a new project I'll be working on to develop a strategy for SFU Library to increase support for OER adoptions and advance open education more broadly on campus.
As part of this project work, I've been tasked with checking in with other institutions (locally and perhaps more broadly) for examples of open education strategy in action. So I would be very grateful indeed for any examples you might be able to share of publicly available documents that articulate plans, goals, visions, statements and/or policies that guide open education strategy at your Library and campus. I do know that Kwantlen has an exemplary "Open Education Strategic Plan 2018-2023<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/openeducation/>" -- and Caroline and Karen, I would love to chat with you further about this sometime if you're willing and able :-)
As I think this may be a topic of interest to others here as well, feel free to reply to our list here with any examples -- or to share with me directly if you feel more comfortable that way. I'm also happy to answer questions about this SFU Library project work any time!

Studio20 is a virtual event and 3 day exploration of ways to make learning interesting, energizing and fun. We will take a studio-based approach on the themes of vision, voice and active learning.
Each day will begin with a keynote to spark thinking. Following each keynote session, there will be studio sessions focussed on exploring thematic concepts and providing dedicated time for hands-on or guided practice in real-time.
In addition, there will be places in the Studio20 event space for further exploration of ideas through group discussions, virtual exhibits, and networking with each other.

Open Access monograph publishing is a rapidly expanding and evolving strategy for making scholarly work globally accessible. This event will explore the opportunities, challenges, and experiences of OA book publishing from the perspective of authors, series editors and publishers. Publishing As Open Pedagogy: OJS & Pressbooks

As open education continues to gain traction in higher education, many are looking for ways to expand their integration of open approaches beyond merely the inclusion of open materials. Open publishing is beginning to emerge as one pathway towards greater engagement in openness in the classroom. This panel will introduce participants to five people working in various capacities to support student publishing through Open Journal Systems and PressBooks, two open source publishing platforms that allow for open dissemination of student-created, instructor-supported content.
