Good afternoon everyone.
This is a reminder that the registration deadline for the Teaching and Learning Conference to be held in Saskatoon May 1-2 is April 24.
Join us for what will be informative, engaging conversations about two of the most important paradigm shifts in Canadian higher education: indigenizing and open educational resources / open pedagogy. This two-day conference is bringing together voices from both movements from a dozen institutions in five provinces to share existing work, ideas for moving forward, and creating opportunities for new partnerships.
There will be speakers from across Canada facilitating concurrent sessions and workshops, plus:
- A keynote by Kory Wilson (Executive Director, Indigenous Initiatives and Partnerships, BCIT)
- A fishbowl discussion involving
- Mary Burgess (Executive Director, BCcampus)
- Maria Campbell (Cultural Advisor, writer, director, and teacher)
- Jacqueline Ottmann (Vice-Provost Indigenous Engagement - University of Saskatchewan)
- David Porter (CEO of eCampus Ontario)
- Kory Wilson

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some examples of OERs being used in continuing education
programs to include in a workshop I'm doing for contract instructors in the
Faculty of Education (University of Alberta).
Currently, we plan to feature:
- Project Management open textbook
<https://opentextbc.ca/projectmanagement/> (open textbook which directly
aligns with industry accreditation and increases accessibility to the
profession outside of professional associations and publications)
- Project Management for IDs open textbook </> (co-creating with
students to again, align with industry accreditation and increase
accessibility)
- ESL (English Second Language) CBL Level 5/6 open textbook
<http://albertaoer.com/content/repository/item?uuid=19071e71-ab12-4184-bc03-…>
(to
share about how two institutions collaborated to create an open textbook
for broad use in post-secondary, community, and professional education
settings)
- (in progress) "*Dental Community Education Package"* (to share about
how the community can come together to equip emerging professionals,
practicing professionals, and community educators with well-crafted,
accessible educational material)
If you have any examples of OER course materials used for non-credit
continuing professional education programs (Language Arts, Business,
Community Engagement, Information Technology, Art/Design, etc), I would
love to hear about them!
Thanks so much

I received the following email from our copyright office today. My initial thought is he can’t use it in the journal article, but I want to confirm this. Thank you.
Hi Heather,
A researcher with Geological Sciences named Jamal came in the other day to ask Kate some questions about a paper he would like to publish. We aren’t certain, but we think he wants to publish in a traditional (i.e., not open) geology journal. He has pictures from five different sources he would like to include. Four are third-party images from already published books are journal article. The last image is a creative commons image<http://ba.e-pics.ethz.ch/latelogin.jspx?records=:579552&r=1523389539059#152…> with a CC BY-SA 4.0<https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/> licence.
Because it is a CC share-alike licence, Kate would like to confirm with you if Jamal can use the image in the article if the entire article cannot be licenced CC BY-SA 4.0. Can the article be published with only the one image maintaining the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, and the rest of the article have the standard “all rights reserved” copyright protection?
Thanks!
Shelby
