Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd share news of the recent release of our first open textbook at Dalhousie University. Hopefully this is the first of many more to come. Additional background information on the project can be found here https://www.dal.ca/news/2018/11/27/the-future-is-open.html

Dear Canada OER Community,
The team behind the University of Alberta’s Opening Up Copyright
instructional modules is pleased to share an update on the series along
with several new openly licensed modules and renewed opportunities to
contribute.
Building on the initial two modules (Images and Public Domain) released in
March 2018, we have now produced six additional modules on the following
topics:
· Open Licensing and Creative Commons
· Other Types of Intellectual Property (IP)
· Theoretical Foundations for Copyright
· CCH v. LSUC
· SOCAN v. Bell, and
· Section 13: Ownership of Copyright
All of the modules can be found here:
https://sites.library.ualberta.ca/copyright/
We’d also like to emphasize that these modules are published under a
Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence so that they can be adopted
and adapted by anyone. On the page for each module you will find a link to
the associated script and slides, to allow for adaptation. The scripts and
slides are also made available under a CC-BY licence.
More information about the series is available on the “About” page (
https://sites.library.ualberta.ca/copyright/about/)
In addition, we would like to highlight the Opening Up Copyright Community
Pages (
https://docs.google.com/document/d/17Ul4YeOovdLOEaczPK7RipG_OgOd7etOcJI8ppT…)
The Community Pages provide an overview of the entire suite of modules to
be developed as part of the series, and also indicates which modules are
currently under development. Furthermore, we encourage you to contribute
to the individual module pages, where we hope to collect your ideas,
feedback or suggestions. Please consider sharing suggestions for Learning
Objectives, ideas for Narratives or Contextual Stories, Test Questions,
Links to Useful Resources, or Other Suggestions for modules that interest
you. You also have the option of including your name on these pages, so
that we can provide attribution for your contributions at the end of the
module. Completed modules will be revised in the summer of 2019, based on
feedback provided in the Community Pages or sent directly to
copyright(a)ualberta.ca with the subject line “OER Copyright Module.”
The Opening Up Copyright instructional modules series receives funding
through the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s Teaching and Learning
Enhancement Fund

the University of Alberta.

Hi All,
I have an instructor who is very keen on developing a Business Information Systems OER textbook from the Canadian perspective.
We researched current OERs and have found a couple in the US that he could use as a launch point for his work. However, I know that business is a very popular area for new development and I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of a similar project (completed or in progress) at their institution or organization.
Thanks,
Jessica

Hi Heather,
The NC clause refers only to the use, not to the entity. So even though her practice may be a commercial entity, the use of handing out patient education materials, to me, seems to be a non-commercial purpose. If there is no payment or compensation directly connected with the exchange, then you should be in the clear.

Subject: [Canadaoer] Creative Commons Question
Good Monday morning everyone.
I have a question about a CC-BY-NC license. This module from NOBA carries that license (https://nobaproject.com/modules/the-nervous-system) I’m married to a chiropractor who would like to take content from the book and put it into some patient education materials to provide to patients for free. Her practice is obviously a business and she’s paid by patients for care, but not for the patient education materials. Can she still take content from this module for this purpose? I’m unsure so want to check.
Thank you.

Does anyone know of an instructor using the OpenStax Economics text with a test bank, either the one from OpenStax or one that they have created / adapted? Our Economics department is considering it, but has some concerns about the test bank.

Good afternoon.
I am very excited to announce that the University of Saskatchewan adaptation of Physical Geology (originally out of BCcampus) has been published to our openpress.usask.ca site. You can find the book specifically at:
https://openpress.usask.ca/physicalgeology/
Please note, do some formatting issues, custom PDF files were created instead of the standard Pressbooks PDF export. The PDFs can be found at the top of the table of contents.

I've had an instructor ask for help locating OERs related to shop safety and power tool use. His exact message: We are planning to put together a "module" or "document/policy" regarding safe use of tablesaws and jointers in our Carpentry and Cabinetmaker shops and wondered what may be available.
I've look at MERLOT, Alberta OER, SkillsCommons, OERCommons, OASIS, BCcampus, and the University of Hawai'i. I've found materials related to OSHA, occupational safety, and CCOHS, but not a specific shop manual for carpentry or a manual for power tools. (I need to give the U of H textbook a closer look as some parts may be relevant). I'm hoping someone might have a lead for me!
Thanks for any assistance,
Jessica
