This message is sent on behalf of Donna Langille (donna.langille(a)ubc.ca) of UBC Okanagan.
In December 2015, Daniel Heath Justice began a Twitter campaign to share the names of Indigenous writers. The reason for his efforts was to: “… push back against the frequent assumptions that our literary history is any less complex, robust, or diverse than that of other peoples" (Daniel Heath Justice, Why Indigenous Literatures Matter?<https://www.wlupress.wlu.ca/Books/W/Why-Indigenous-Literatures-Matter2>).
In solidarity with his efforts, Honouring Indigenous Writers<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/> is a yearly event to increase awareness and coverage of Indigenous literature.
This year, the organizing team has put together a schedule of free events and activities designed for virtual participation throughout the month of March 2022. The events include:
* Author readings <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> by Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm and Dallas Hunt, Joshua Whitehead, Kim Senklip Harvey, and more
* An interactive workshop and walk<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels> with Peter Morin, titled “Words to Give Back: Words that have lifted us up“
* Self-paced Weekly Wikipedia Challenges<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/activities> to increase the coverage of Indigenous authors
* Wikipedia training and drop-in Zoom sessions<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels>
* A presentation<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels> by Dr. Aubrey Hanson and Dr. Erin Spring on Books to Build on: Indigenous Literatures for Learning
* And a social media campaign on Twitter<https://twitter.com/HIW_Wiki>
These events and activities are free and open to anyone to participate. Please join us at our kickoff event and reading on March 7, 2022<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> and learn more about the other events we have planned! You can also read more at the HIW<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca> website.
We would also appreciate your support of the event by helping to promote it through your listservs, social media accounts, and other spaces to help raise awareness of Indigenous literature and engage in open community knowledge creation.
The event team has developed a number of social media assets in a variety of sizes for ease of sharing. The assets can be downloaded here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SE0a-45pOdjLIvUtXIKI7a7XUjOAtUxA?us…
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and thank you in advance for any support you can give in making this event a success. Thank you to event sponsors, the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies, UBC Library (Vancouver and Okanagan), UBC Public Humanities Hub (Vancouver and Okanagan), BCcampus, University of Calgary Libraries and Cultural Resources, and Indigenous Programs and Services UBC Okanagan.
Best,
Donna Langille on behalf of the Honoring Indigenous Writers Event Team

Hi All,
I'm excited to share SAIT's Open Education Week activities. We are still online for our classes and events, so two very talented students have developed the following online asynchronous activities that anyone can access:
* The OER Mythbuster Word Search<https://libguides.sait.ca/c.php?g=728509&p=5225733> includes pop-up explanations for common OER myths.
* The digital escape room, An "Open" Secret at the Reg Erhardt Library<https://forms.gle/Qxxg3dsj2mvqZqjw8>, has users follow a series of clues and puzzles to find their way out of the library. Current students can win a prize when they complete the escape room.
Feel free to link to these resources. Our general calendar of events is available at https://libguides.sait.ca/OEWeek
Cheers,
Jessica

Oki, Amba'wastitch, Danit'ada, Tân'si, Hello. We would like to acknowledge that SAIT is situated on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy. The City of Calgary encompasses a region that the Blackfoot tribes of Southern Alberta described as Moh'kinsstis, meaning 'Elbow,' in reference to its location at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. Since time immemorial, this region was a traditional gathering place for the tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy. We are meeting/gathered on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which, today encompasses the Indigenous people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta: the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina, the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, the Northwest Métis Homeland - Region 3.
