Hi everyone,
I’m hoping to get some advice on appropriate honorariums to provide to people who work on Open Textbooks. Specifically, I’d like to provide payment to someone to write a chapter for my textbook on a subject I’m not well-versed in, and I’d also like to remunerate two to three peer reviewers of the text.
Does anyone have guidance on respectful sums for writing and peer-reviewing?

Call for Expressions of Interest – CARL Visiting Program Officer for Open Education

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/> is the national voice of Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries and two federal institutions. A bilingual not-for-profit organization, CARL coordinates national initiatives across its member institutions and promotes their causes to achieve excellence in research and higher education.
CARL invites applications for a Visiting Program Officer (VPO) focused in the area of open education (OE). The position will entail working for CARL for the equivalent of one day per week, and is expected to start in October 2021, for a period of one year. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 10, 2021.
Visiting Program Officer positions are an arrangement between CARL and the individual’s home institution, normally for a minimum period of one year at 20% of their time. There is no salary remuneration from CARL associated with this position; the home institution continues to pay the Visiting Program Officer’s salary. Benefits arising from this experience for the incumbent and the home institution include broadened experience and knowledge gained from working on national initiative; while for CARL and its members, the position helps advance a common priority.
In 2018, CARL identified OE leadership as an important area for capacity building within its institutions. CARL has since formed an Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/advancing-research/scholarly-communication/open-ed…> and led activities and programs designed to bolster practice and support the development of national leadership in this area. CARL has also initiated engagement with other post-secondary stakeholder groups in considering strategies for increasing the momentum of open education in Canada. The VPO for OE will guide CARL’s evolving program of open education initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITY:
In collaboration with Joy Kirchner, chair of CARL’s Open Education Working Group (OEWG), and with Lise Brin, CARL’s full-time Program Officer supporting the Advancing Research Committee’s initiatives, the VPO will take a leading role in planning and delivering CARL’s OE efforts, working closely with the CARL Open Education Working Group to shape its slate of OE-related activities and communications plan and deliver these activities, including but not limited to “OeLE Light,” a workshop-in-a-box version of the Open Education Leadership Essentials workshop offered by the OEWG in 2020, and CARL’s communication activities related to OER.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be based at a Canadian post-secondary institution;
* Must have obtained library director’s agreement for the arrangement with CARL as described;
* Possesses excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
* Has proven group facilitation skills or will have successfully delivered training programs to peers, and demonstrates the ability to ensure diverse experiences and perspectives are treated respectfully;
* Has project management experience;
* Has significant experience and expertise in the areas of open education and open educational resources;
* The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in French and English will be deemed an asset.
If there are multiple candidates who fulfil the criteria above, selection will be based on demonstrated leadership, prior involvement, and level of institutional support; and may involve an interview.

À titre d’organisme bilingue sans but lucratif, l’ABRC coordonne les initiatives nationales de ses établissements membres et fait progresser leurs causes afin d’atteindre l’excellence dans la recherche et l’enseignement supérieur.
L’ABRC invite les personnes intéressées à présenter leur candidature pour le poste d’agente ou d’agent de programme invité(e) (API) pour l’éducation ouverte (ÉO). Le poste nécessitera au moins un jour de travail par semaine pour l’ABRC et devrait commencer en octobre 2021 pour une durée d’un an. La date limite pour présenter une demande est le vendredi 10 septembre 2021.

The University of Ottawa Open and Affordable Learning Materials Working Group, sponsored by the University Librarian and Vice-Provost, Knowledge Systems, the Vice-Provost of Academic Affairs, and the Associate Vice-President of Student Affairs, is pleased to share its report and recommendations. Created in late 2019, the working group had the mandate to 1) develop awareness and promote the use of affordable course content; 2) explore and recommend strategies to establish an environment at uOttawa in which the creation and adoption of OER is encouraged and rewarded; and 3) coordinate efforts among key campus stakeholders who lead and support open education initiatives on campus. The report concludes twelve months of work and builds on existing open access and e-learning initiatives. It presents four categories of recommendations to guide open education and textbook affordability activities at uOttawa for the next five years.

I hope that this email finds you well. My name is Dr. Shereen Hassan and I am an SFU criminology alumni. I completed my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Simon Verdun-Jones in 2010. I am now a faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in the Criminology department and have been here for almost 17 years.
I am reaching out about an opportunity to contribute to an Open Education Resource for the Introduction to Criminology course. This text will be the first of its kind in Canadian Criminology and is unique as it seeks to incorporate Indigenous knowledge, history and content in a way that Criminology texts to date have failed to do. Dr. Gail Anderson has contributed in the area of biological explanations of crime, and Dr. Zachary Rowan and Michaela McGuire have co-authored a chapter on learning theories. There are authors from several other universities in B.C. and elsewhere, so it's quite a collaborative effort!
I am still looking for an author in the area of (1) Victimology.
We are flexible on deadlines, and we are hoping to have a draft by December 2021. This text is an introductory text, so the idea here is to provide a brief overview, but to also address this theoretical framework's application to Indigenous principles, Indigenous peoples, Indigenous issues in some way, wherever possible. We have asked authors to keep the chapters short (approximately 4000 words) or as close to that as possible.
It would be a wonderful honour to have you contribute to this important project.

Hello everyone!
The first (University of Alberta, CTL) Open Pedagogy Community of Practice meeting occurred this week, and I’m pleased to share we had 37 participants from various Canadian and US (83 registrations). The CoP is intended to focus specifically on instructional practices which are open (OER-enabled or not).
Now that we have one session under our belt and feedback is rolling in, I want to reach out to develop partnerships. My vision is to collaboratively host quarterly sessions and drive our planning based on feedback generated from the participants each term. If you’re interested in collaborating to co-host the November session, I would love to hear from you! The commitment would involve partnering with me (yes!) to achieve the following:
- Evaluate feedback collected from the community
- Determine the format and topics of November’s meeting
- Plan potential future feedback loops to enact
- Co-host November’s meeting
- Post-event communication / feedback
Currently, our next session is booked on November 16, 1pm - 3pm MDT.

This open educational resource (OER) brings together Canadian and international scholars in a contemporary, pluralistic volume introducing undergraduates in a variety of relevant disciplines to political ideologies and worldviews. This introductory volume is also suitable for a wider general audience. The first of its kind, this fully open textbook on political worldviews deals with the historical development of classical ideologies, while expanding and updating the subject using contemporary political examples and non-Eurocentric examinations of ideology. The volume includes chapters on Indigenous worldviews, Confucianism, and the future of ideology in the emerging global order. The text also includes a valuable sets of discussion questions for each chapter.

Their website describes the event as, "An opportunity for instructors across a variety of disciplines to meet, share ideas, and build antiracist approaches to teaching and learning."

* Lightning talks – presentation of the most inspiring Open Education initiatives from the time of the pandemic [September 15]. In the tradition of exchanging the best practices from Open Education, we’re seeking inspiring initiatives. Have you completed a project or started an inspirational initiative within OE Policy in the past year and are you willing to share it with the Open Education community? If so, we’re looking for you! You’ll have up to 7 minutes to present your project to the world.
* Workshops for policy makers and OE activists [September 16]. In small groups of up to 15 participants, where every person can be heard and bring their unique perspective and experience, we want to talk about the future of Open Education. About the Forum. Open Education Policy Forum is an international conference organised by Centrum Cyfrowe Foundation in cooperation with Communia Association, Hewlett Foundation, Intellectual Property Institute, OEGlobal, Otwarte Zasoby and SPARC Europe. Once a year, we bring together stakeholders (activists, researchers, teachers, policy makers) from around the world to exchange good practices and discuss challenges and opportunities faced by the Open Education community. We want to provide an opportunity for networking, exchange of knowledge and future collaborations.
“The Universe of Openness” – about the upcoming edition of the Forum. Open Education initiatives have been expanding extraordinarily since 2020. Join Ann Fiddler and Dr. Rebecca Karoff for a panel focusing on what is next for OER concerning equity and diversity. Event hosted by the CJCLS OER Committee. Use the link at the bottom to register for the first of the special series.

* ANN FIDDLER
Ann Fiddler is the Open Education Librarian for the City University of New York in the Office of the Dean of Library Services. This office supports 32 libraries across 24 campuses in the 5 boroughs of New York City. Ann has been overseeing Open Educational Resource initiatives across the university since 2014. She has been the principal investigator for grants in support of OER from Achieving the Dream, The Gates Foundation, and The Public Interest Technology Network. She is currently leading the University-wide OER Initiative generously funded by New York State.
* DR. REBECCA KAROFF
Dr. Rebecca Karoff joined the University of Texas System in February 2016 as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She is responsible for leading and supporting student success initiatives system-wide. Her work addresses the student success continuum, PK-20 and into the workforce, and recognizes the remarkable responsibility and opportunity of the University of Texas System to achieve more equitable access and outcomes for the state’s increasingly diverse students. She is the primary architect of the UT System’s student success framework, and collaborates with institutional colleagues across the UT System to ensure student financial well-being, effective advising, and students’ sense of academic and social belonging. Her work includes leadership of the UT System’s momentum-building strategy on Open Educational Resources (OER), strengthening curricular innovation, and working with faculty to embrace their roles in student success. All her work is data-informed, equity-centered and quality-driven, and she is interested in expanded approaches to measuring student success. Beyond the UT System, she is a member of the Texas Transfer Alliance, a joint effort among the Charles A. Dana Center, the Texas Success Center, the Texas Association of Community Colleges, and four of the state’s public university systems (Texas A&M University System, Texas State University System, University of North Texas System and University of Texas System) to improve transfer student outcomes. She is active in NASH, the National Association of System Heads, and is a co-author of the NASH Equity Action Framework, a tool designed for university systems to assess their progress toward, and act on the adoption and integration of essential equity practices through sustained engagement. She chairs the Equity Work Group of DOERS3, the Driving OER Sustainability for Student Success Collaborative, work resulting in the DOERS3 OER Equity Blueprint and Equity Through OER Rubric.

I hope that this email finds you well. My name is Dr. Shereen Hassan and I am an SFU criminology alumni. I completed my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Simon Verdun-Jones in 2010. I am now a faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in the Criminology department and have been here for almost 17 years.
I am reaching out about an opportunity to contribute to an Open Education Resource for the Introduction to Criminology course. This text will be the first of its kind in Canadian Criminology and is unique as it seeks to incorporate Indigenous knowledge, history and content in a way that Criminology texts to date have failed to do. There are authors from several universities, including Simon Fraser University, the University of the Fraser Valley, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the University of Winnipeg, as well as other institutions in B.C. and elsewhere, so it's quite a collaborative effort!
I am still looking for authors in the area of Media and Crime.
We are flexible on deadlines, and we are hoping to have a draft by the end of summer. This text is an introductory text, so the idea here is to provide a brief overview, but to also address how theories and principles in this area of research relate to Indigenous principles, Indigenous peoples, and/or Indigenous issues in some way, wherever possible. We have asked authors to keep the chapters short (approximately 4000 words) or as close to that as possible.
It would be a wonderful honour to have you contribute to this important project.
