Join us for the June Open Education Cross-Canada Coffee Chat (#OECCCC)
Date: Wednesday, June 16, 2021
Time: 3-4 p.m. ET
Register here (everyone is welcome): https://bit.ly/3gcWGyA
The CARL Open Education Working Group<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/advancing-research/scholarly-communication/open-ed…> invites you to the sixth call in this series of informal gatherings for individuals involved in open education (OE) in Canada (faculty, instructors, librarians, students, instructional designers, etc.).
This month, we are bringing the Canadian open education community together for a discussion on Accessibility in Open Education.
Calls in this series take place on the third Wednesday of most months. While this month’s discussion will be primarily in English, bilingual moderators will be on hand to help ensure participants are able to contribute in the official language of their choice. We will be taking a 2-month summer break, resuming #OECCCC calls in September.
Settle in with your beverage of choice and prepare for some coast-to-coast sharing and networking.
If you can’t attend this meeting but would like to know about future OE CCCC events (and receive other Canadian OE news), please email Lauri Aesoph (lauri.aesoph(a)bccampus.ca<mailto:lauri.aesoph@bccampus.ca>) and ask to be added to the CanadaOER listserv.

Dear colleagues,
BCcampus recently received notice of an opportunity to collaborate with Wiki Education in the Fall 2021 term. Below is the modified text from a message that we received about this opportunity.
The deadline to run a Wikipedia assignment in Fall 2021 is rapidly approaching! To run a Wikipedia assignment this Fall, submit your application by June 20. Wiki Education's support is fully funded, and there are no fees to run a Wikipedia assignment.
The reasons to run a Wikipedia assignment are myriad, but here are some reflections that capture the essence of the project:
"Although many students admitted they had first felt intimidated by the thought of their work being ‘out there’ on the internet, they all commented on the huge sense of achievement they felt seeing their articles published on Wikipedia at the end of semester and how contributing to global knowledge was incredibly fulfilling."
—Professor Victoria Austin, University of Winnipeg
"One of the things I loved about this project was the idea of being able to improve something on a public platform and offer substantive research that could be helpful to someone who might not have access to the same resources we are so lucky to have as students at the University of Michigan."
—Aja Brandmeier, Student, University of Michigan
To apply for a spot in the program, follow these steps:
1. Create an account at dashboard.wikiedu.org<https://dashboard.wikiedu.org/>.
2. Go through Wiki Education's Orientation for New Instructors<https://dashboard.wikiedu.org/training/instructors/new-instructor-orientati…>. You'll be prompted to do this once you create an account.
3. After you complete the orientation, you'll be asked to launch the Assignment Design Wizard. Go through the wizard to create your course page. Your course page will be the central hub for your Wikipedia assignment, and it's how you receive support from Wiki Education. When you're ready, submit the course page, and your application will be complete!
We will notify you by July 16 if we are able to offer you a spot for the Fall 2021 term. Applications submitted after June 20 will only be considered if space allows.
For more information, contact Helaine Blumenthal at helaine(a)wikiedu.org<mailto:helaine@wikiedu.org>.

Hi All,
I have an instructor who wants to create a student authored Pressbook. What we need to work out is the logistics of multiple students developing content for a single book. I am currently reviewing A Guide to Making Open Textbooks with Students<https://press.rebus.community/makingopentextbookswithstudents/>, but we are curious about the practical process of managing student creation of content. If you know of a Pressbook that was authored by a class, I'd love to speak to the faculty member about their process!
Cheers,

I would agree with Jenni-
We edited the chapters ( in multiple formats) before putting them into pressbooks for version 1.
This year we tried to have the students edit in press books - and it proved to be too difficult at this point in time.

Morning Jessica !
I have co-designed a pressbook with my graduate #edtechethics class. We are working on version #2 this year, but this is the link to Version #1. Each student wrote their own chapter and I supported them. I co-wrote the Introductory chapter
which has more information.

We've provided additional information on the program and how to apply<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/#apply> below, and there's also a comprehensive FAQ<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/faq/> on our website. What is the Open Education Leadership Program?
The SPARC Open Education Leadership Program is an intensive, two-semester professional development program to empower open education advocates with the knowledge, skills, and connections to lead successful open education initiatives that benefit students.
· Participate in an intensive, semester-long online course during the fall to gain comprehensive knowledge of open education, stakeholder engagement, and how to design an initiative on campus.
· Plan and execute a capstone project during the spring that has an impact on open education locally and that contributes back to the broader movement.
· Develop a vibrant community of practice among a cohort of peers, and grow as a leader through mentorship support.
· Attend the Open Education Conference<https://openeducationconference.org/> virtually, and receive additional guidance to make the most of the experience and start building a network.
Who should apply?
· Eligible candidates must be employed at a higher education institution, consortium or related organization in the U.S. or Canada, or at one of SPARC’s international members. Candidates from SPARC member institutions will receive special consideration and a tuition discount.
· The program is open to all academic professionals with open education-related responsibilities, including library professionals, instructional designers, project coordinators and related roles.
· Candidates should be prepared for a significant time commitment (6-8 hours per week for online coursework in the fall, average 5 hours per week for capstone work in the spring) and have the support of their institution and/or supervisor to participate.
Tuition
Tuition is inclusive of both semesters, and covers all costs except attendance at the Open Education Conference (virtual). Institutions are expected to sponsor tuition on behalf of the accepted applicant, and will be asked to sign a standard enrollment agreement.
SPARC Member Rate: $1,995 USD / $2,495 CAD
Non-Member Rate: $2,995 USD or $3,995 CAD
SPARC recognizes that all institutions are facing budget pressures due to COVID-19 and has worked to reduce costs as much as possible. The 2021-22 tuition rates reflect a more than 20% discount over pre-COVID rates.
Tuition discount
SPARC will offer a limited number of tuition discounts to support the participation of candidates who would increase the diversity of the cohort. Candidates eligible to apply tuition discounts include:
* Candidates who self-identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous or People of Color)
* Candidates employed by community colleges
* Candidates employed by minority-serving institutions
* Candidates for whom the cost of tuition would be a barrier
How to apply?
· The full program details and the application form are available on our website. <https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/#apply>
· The application deadline is May 28th at 11:59pm EDT. Applications received by this date will be notified by June 4th.
· More information is available in our FAQ<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/faq/>.

Hi all,
I’m supporting a faculty member who is looking to conduct an environmental scan within their department of all learning resources that are being used by instructors, not just OER. The goal is to identify gaps in OER use.
Would anyone happen to have access to a survey that was used to conduct a similar scan elsewhere?
As a first step, we’re working backwards by identifying bookstore orders.
Thank you all for your time and expertise!

Dear all,
I’m writing on behalf of faculty member Shereen Hassan at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia. Dr. Hassan is looking for contributors to author two chapters in a much-anticipated, Canada-focused, Introduction to Criminology openly-licensed textbook. The two outstanding chapters that require authors are:
1. Methods/Measuring Crime
2. Environmental Criminology
Please see Dr. Hassan’s letter below and circulate this Call for Authors widely. This is a paid opportunity and would come with a $500 honorarium.
If interested, or you would like more information, please reach out to Dr. Shereen Hassan at shereen.hassan(a)kpu.ca<mailto:shereen.hassan@kpu.ca> by Friday, May 21, 2021.
--
I hope that this email finds you well. My name is Dr. Shereen Hassan and I am an SFU criminology alumni. I completed my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Simon Verdun-Jones in 2010. I am now a faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in the Criminology department and have been here for almost 17 years.
I am reaching out about an opportunity to contribute to an Open Education Resource for the Introduction to Criminology course. This text will be the first of its kind in Canadian Criminology and is unique as it seeks to incorporate Indigenous knowledge, history and content in a way that Criminology texts to date have failed to do. Dr. Gail Anderson has contributed in the area of biological explanations of crime, and Dr. Zachary Rowan and Michaela McGuire have co-authored a chapter on learning theories. There are authors from several other universities in B.C. and elsewhere, so it's quite a collaborative effort!
I am still looking for authors in the area of (1) Environmental Criminology and (2) Measuring Crime and Methods. For environmental Criminology, we were hoping this chapter could begin with a discussion of the classical school and from that, stem into rational choice/choice theories to include also routine activities and other theories falling under this umbrella. The methods chapter should cover UCR, GSS and self-report surveys. It will also be necessary to introduce the idea of statistics, surveys, etc., as one method of measuring crime, but also talk about how qualitative inquiry is important for measuring things like perceptions of crime, severity, etc. A basic introduction to the various methods that criminologists use could be weaved into this chapter. Key methods concepts briefly defined here would include: empirical, qualitative and quantitative, sampling, reliability, validity, deductive and inductive, correlation, case studies and experiments. A detailed discussion of Indigenous methodologies, including but not limited to oral history, would be instrumental, as well as a contextual background for students to better understand the statistics which demonstrate the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in crime statistics.
We are flexible on deadlines, and we are hoping to have a draft by the end of summer. This text is an introductory text, so the idea here is to provide a brief overview, but to also address this theoretical framework's application to Indigenous principles, Indigenous peoples, Indigenous issues in some way, wherever possible. We have asked authors to keep the chapters short (approximately 4000 words) or as close to that as possible.
It would be a wonderful honour to have you contribute to this important project.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
All the best,
Shereen Hassan, PhD

Hello Everyone,
CAUL-CBUA has been approved for funding from the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program (an internship program for unemployed or underemployed college or university graduates) for a 26-week, full-time intern position for a postsecondary program graduate<https://young-canada-works.canada.ca/Opportunity/ProjectDetails?projectId=1…> (any college or university; any program) with responsibilities focused on:
1. Project management for the AtlanticOER Repository and Service<https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca/> (open educational resources), including user support; and
2. Leadership of a member-centric process to evaluate the current CAUL-CBUA website and intranet<https://caul-cbua.ca/>, as well as stakeholder needs in a website and intranet, with the final deliverable being a report to the CAUL-CBUA Executive Director detailing options and recommendations.
This position starts on May 31st, and it will be fully virtual, so the candidate can work from anywhere. They must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada, and be legally entitled to work in Canada. The key role for the internship is in project management and service support around OER, so the candidate can come from any field of study. As this position is partially fund by the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage site<https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/funding/young-canada-wo…>, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for this program.
Please feel free to share the internship position widely as the closing date for applications is May 17th. If you have any suggestions for places for me to post the position, I’d greatly appreciate you letting me know, particularly for places outside of the library world given the OER focus as the potential candidates could come from programs in computer science, education, management, etc. I’ve attached the job description to make it easier to share. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks!

CAUL-CBUA represents member libraries across the region, all of whom sit on the unceded and traditional territories of First Peoples. In Newfoundland and Labrador, our libraries sit on the homelands of the Inuit of Nunatsiavut and NunatuKavut, the Innu of Nitassinan, the Beothuk and the Mi’kmaq peoples. In Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, we find our friends and colleagues situated on the territory of the Mi’kmaq. In New Brunswick, libraries are found on the land of the Wəlastəkwiyik, Mi’kmaq, and Passamaquoddy Peoples. We at CAUL-CBUA wish to express our sincerest gratitude to the First Peoples who share their ancestral homelands with us all.
I'm pleased to announce that we have released a new book at USask - Project Management for Instructional Designers (1st Canadian Edition). This was an open pedagogy project done by graduate students in our College of Education.

Subject: [LibOER] Open Education Global 2021 Conference
To: SPARC Libraries & OER Forum <liboer(a)sparcopen.org<mailto:liboer@sparcopen.org>>
Hi there SPARC open education colleagues. We’re excited to announce that the call for proposals for the Open Education Global 2021 conference<https://conference.oeglobal.org/2021/> is now open until May 7th.
This year Open Education Global<https://www.oeglobal.org/> (OEGlobal) is trying something different by having the conference focus on raising awareness of, and taking action on, the UNESCO OER Recommendation<http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=49556&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION…>.
The conference has a five day online conference component running from Sept-27 through Oct-1, with each day focusing on a different action area of the Recommendation, and an in-person congress 5-7-Oct (pandemic permitting) in Nantes France.
A special aspect of this years conference is support for sessions in all six of the official UNESCO languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish). We see this as a significant step forward in embracing the diversity and inclusion aspects of open education.
The conference website is now live<https://conference.oeglobal.org/2021/> and the Call for Proposals<https://conference.oeglobal.org/2021/call-for-proposals/> for the online conference portion of the event is open.
I invite you all to submit a proposal and it will be super helpful if you could circulate the conference website and call for proposals through your networks and encourage others to submit. Thanks for your help in advancing open education through this global community effort.
Paul

Webinar: How Can We Successfully Collaborate to Advance National Capacity for OER in Canada?
https://www.carl-abrc.ca/mini-site-page/webinar-advancing-national-capacity…
Date: Thursday, April 22, 2021
Time: 1 p.m. ET
Register here (all are welcome): https://bit.ly/39Wd707
Funding by provincial governments to encourage the development or use of open education resources (OER) in post-secondary education has been far from consistent across Canada, ranging from long-standing programs of annual funding for OER production and promotion to limited short-term project funding or in a few cases, no contributions at all. Yet it is clear that the investments made to date – not only by provincial governments but also by individual institutions or consortia – have produced important results, demonstrated by increased adoption of OER textbooks and reduction in student expenses. (For more background, see CARL Open Education Working Group’s 2020 Environmental Scan of Open Education Service and Support in Canada<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/OEWG_environmental_scan…>.)
So how can we strengthen OER adoption further, better ensuring that all post-secondary students have opportunities to benefit from regionally relevant OER, and that faculty and instructors who wish to incorporate open education in their teaching have the supports and incentives to allow them to do so?
Panelists will discuss strategies and opportunities for advancing Canada’s national OER capacity, whether through funding, training, infrastructure, or advocacy. SPARC’s experience with obtaining funding commitments at the federal level and with a variety of state-level policy strategies in the US will also be presented to help inform the discussion.
This webinar will be recorded, and will be offered with simultaneous interpretation in order to accommodate francophone and anglophone presenters and attendees.
CARL wishes to thank the SPARC team for their support in planning and delivering this webinar.

https://www.carl-abrc.ca/fr/mini-site-page/webinaire-faire-progresser-la-ca…
Date : Jeudi 22 avril 2021
Heure : 13h HE

In addition to the Open Education Cross-Canada Coffee Chat<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/mini-site-page/april2021-oecccc/> that was announced last week and will cover a similar topic, CARL is pleased to co-present, along with ARL, the following webinar and workshop. Note that this session is 90 minutes and not Canadian-specific, while the coffee chat will be about the Canadian context and less in-depth, more discussion-based.

Code of Best Practices in Fair Use (and Fair Dealing in Canada) for OER Webinar and Workshop
Date: Monday April 19, 2021
Time: 11:00am - 12:30pm ET
Registration: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcqd-ioqDgqGdBYwQhQEQIo3PfZCdpz_C…
Fair use and fair dealing are the rights to use copyrighted content without asking the rightsholder for permission. This statutory safeguard is key to a balanced copyright regime, allowing creativity and knowledge to flourish without constraint. Because the context in which librarians, teachers, musicians, journalists, and others rely on fair use varies, these and other communities<https://cmsimpact.org/report-list/codes/> have developed codes of best practices for fair use that are based on common scenarios in their fields. The newest code is on Open Educational Resources (OER), specifically what fair use enables with respect to using copyrighted material as “inserts.” The codes are not manuals—they are frameworks for decision-making according to community standards.
Join ARL and CARL on April 19th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Eastern for a panel discussion of the new code of best practices<https://www.wcl.american.edu/impact/initiatives-programs/pijip/documents/co…> in fair use for OER, including its Canadian appendix<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Strengthening_Canadian_…>, and what’s next for codes of best practice in the US and Canada. Then, stay for an “off the record” workshop with the authors to build confidence in your own fair use of copyrighted materials for OER.
Please visit the event page<https://www.arl.org/event/code-of-best-practices-in-fair-use-fair-dealing-f…> for the complete list of panelists and more information about the event.

Date : Lundi 19 avril 2021
Time : 11 h à 12 h 30 HE
Inscription : https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcqd-ioqDgqGdBYwQhQEQIo3PfZCdpz_C…

Dear colleagues,
A reminder that all Canadian faculty, librarians, bookstore staff, and students are invited to participate in the Canadian Distribution of OpenStax hardcover textbooks<https://sfu-bccampus.cmail20.com/t/d-l-qcjdty-ehldhkki-jl/> survey, ending on April 30. All responses are anonymous. Final results will be shared out later this year.
BCcampus in partnership with Vretta<https://www.vretta.com/ordering.html> and the Manitoba Open Textbook Initiative<https://openedmb.ca/> is surveying Canadian post-secondary institutions about their knowledge about/adoption of/suggested improvements to the distribution of OpenStax’s hardbound books in Canada<https://bccampus.ca/2021/02/23/hard-back-openstax-books-come-to-canada/>, and the usage of and need for printed open textbooks in general.
Regards,
Lauri Aesoph
