The CARL Open Education Working Group<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/advancing-research/scholarly-communication/open-ed…> invites you to the fourth call in this series of informal gatherings for individuals involved in open education (OE) in Canada (faculty, instructors, librarians, students, instructional designers, etc.).
This month’s topic is Fair Dealing for Open Educational Resources – so why not take this opportunity to invite all your collaborators across campus (and beyond) to join us?
Special guests Peter Jaszi (American University Washington College of Law), Prue Adler (American University Washington College of Law), and Carys Craig (York University), along with OE copyright specialists Mark Swartz (Queen’s University, CARL Visiting Program Officer for Copyright), and Graeme Slaght (University of Toronto) will get things started speaking about the recently released Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Open Educational Resources<https://www.wcl.american.edu/impact/initiatives-programs/pijip/documents/co…> and its application in the Canadian context. Then we look forward to hearing how others on the call think fair dealing might be applied to OE at their institutions (that means you!).
Share what you think the benefits are of using fair dealing for OE on your campuses and beyond. Ask questions or just sit back and listen! While this month’s discussion will be primarily in English, bilingual moderators will be on hand to help ensure participants are able to contribute in the official language of their choice.
Calls in this series take place on the third Wednesday of most months. Settle in with your beverage of choice and prepare for some coast-to-coast sharing and networking.
If you can’t attend this meeting but would like to know about future OE CCCC events (and receive other Canadian OE news), please email Lauri Aesoph (lauri.aesoph(a)bccampus.ca<mailto:lauri.aesoph@bccampus.ca>) and ask to be added to the CanadaOER listserv.

Dear colleagues,
In collaboration with open-education librarians in B.C., BCcampus is happy to announce the newly formed LaTeX Learning Community<https://bccampus.ca/event/latex-learning-community-2/>, which began providing one-hour drop-in sessions last month. These sessions provide assistance to a broad range of users tackling LaTeX<https://opentextbc.ca/pressbooks/chapter/what-is-latex/> in Pressbooks, from beginners to experienced users.
While these sessions are limited to members of the B.C. and Yukon post-secondary systems, each session will be recorded and posted in BCcampus's Events Archives<https://bccampus.ca/events/events-archive/>. A recording of the first (March 17, 2021<https://opentextbc.ca/pressbooks/chapter/latex-support/#latexrecordings>) drop-in session is now available. To complement the recordings, a new LaTeX Questions Answered<https://opentextbc.ca/pressbooks/part/latex/> section has been added to the BCcampus Pressbooks Guide<https://opentextbc.ca/pressbooks/>.

Hi Everyone,
I have a prof who is on a joint session between the Canada Media Fund, DOCTalks and SSHRC for Congress this June. His concept is to use an H5P branching scenario that will guide users through a series of videos to learn more about using documentary media for knowledge mobilization purposes. He’s wondering if Pressbooks be a good place to host this? The session will be live and synchronous but attendees will have the chance to engage with the videos at their own pace through the session for 15-20 minutes. Also, there are estimates that there could be up to 600 attendees. Does anyone know if Pressbooks is able to handle that level of traffic?
I tried posting a question to the H5P Forum, but although I can login to the H5P.org website, I can’t seem to post to the forum, so I thought that I’d take it out to this list as I don’t have much experience yet with H5P. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Cynthia

Dear colleagues,
Open Education Week is fast approaching! To celebrate, BCcampus is hosting an Open Education Challenge Series<https://oechallenge.opened.ca/about-the-open-education-challenge-series/> for educators interested in learning more about open education practices (OEP). From March 1 to March 5, we will release two challenges a day. A challenge is a micro activity that you can do in 10 minutes or less that will introduce a small aspect of open education.
Everyone is welcome to participate, but the challenges are designed for educators who are new to open education. Topics to explore include open licences, open textbooks, and perhaps even open pedagogy! This isn’t a bootcamp or crash course in open education: it’s more of a tasting buffet of appetizers, designed to allow even the most time-constrained educators to participate.
Please share this event with your departments and networks, especially those who are new to open education. Invite your colleagues to participate with you! It’s a great way to learn about OEP together. Here is the event page and where to register: OE Challenge Series 2021<https://bccampus.ca/event/open-education-challenge-series-2021/>
Sincerely,
The Facilitators: Carolee Clyne, Josie Gray, Clint Lalonde, Melanie Meyers, and Krista Lambert

Hi everyone,
The annual OER conference and the Domains conference are teaming up for 2021, into #OERxDomains21<https://oer21.oerconf.org/> in April! I personally have never been to the OER conference b/c it’s held in the UK and I haven’t been travelling much lately (even before the pandemic), and I’m excited to join this great combination of conferences online. I thought some of you might be interested as well.
Below is more information and a link to the call for proposals—proposals are due Jan. 31.

· Theme 2: Open Education responses to surveillance technologies and data ownership in education;
· Theme 3: Open in Action: open teaching, educational practices and resources, how you might be using Domains and other tools;
· Theme 4: Shifts in agency and creativity as empowerment of learners and educators;
· Theme 5: Open Source Tools: infrastructure, cloud environments, targeted teaching tools.
Wildcard proposals that specifically address the conference themes in relation to open practice, research and policy are also welcome.
