Criteria For Choose OER and Supporting Tools

Hello all. Our College of Engineering is doing a major revamp of their first year curriculum. As part of that they have set a goal to reduce textbook costs for students and will be considering OER when they can find appropriate materials. They are also looking for a homework system(s). I’m trying to persuade them to avoid commercial systems since that will simply replace money going to publishers for textbooks with money going to publishers for homework systems. I’m wondering if anyone might have some criteria that they provide instructors / departments with for determining if the OER available will meet their NEEDS (wants are another story) and what modifications might be necessary, as well as what criteria they might use for determining appropriate ancillary resources and tools. Their existing criteria for the homework system would not be found in any existing systems, so I need to show them some more realistic criteria. Gerontology

Good Friday afternoon everyone. I have a nursing instructor who is looking to replace a commercial textbook currently used for a course in Gerontology. Her colleagues are using Gerontological Nursing & Healthy Aging by Touhy, Jett, Boscart, and McCleary, while students have found Gerontological Nursing Competencies For Care (4th Edition) by Mauk more useful. She would prefer that her students not have to buy a textbook. Does anyone know of any good existing OER that might replace the textbook? Using Cove

We have an instructor from our English Department who is considering using Cove. Does anyone have any experience with it? She’s looking into it, but my browsers don’t want to load it because of a lack of a “secure connection”. From what she’s told me students need to each pay $10 to collaborate on what would be an open access publication. The Canadian Association of Research Libraries has been monitoring the development of OER for several years, and in 2014 carried out a survey of its members regarding their involvement in OER, subsequently producing a working paper, Open Textbooks: Opportunities for Research Libraries<http://www.carl-abrc.ca/doc/open_educational_resources.pdf>. Four years later, it is clear that library involvement in OER (and open textbooks specifically) has increased substantially. Provincial funding programs and individual projects have been developed across Canada aimed at lowering the cost of student learning materials while also offering instructors accessible content that they can tailor and develop to suit their evolving pedagogical practices. In 2012 BCcampus launched Canada’s first publicly funded open textbook development project, followed by initiatives in Alberta, Manitoba, and most recently through Ontario’s eCampusOntario. Individual OER projects aimed at supporting a specific course or area of study have also cropped up at post-secondary educational institutions throughout Canada, often the result of collaborations involving faculty, librarians, and centres for teaching and learning. Internationally, SPARC has taken a leading role in OER and open education advocacy and training, offering in 2017-2018 a first instance of its in-depth Open Education Leadership Program<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/> for librarians (a second offering is set to launch this month). To identify needs at the national level related to OER involvement by research libraries, CARL invited ten emerging and established library leaders in OER to a one-day working meeting. The meeting was hosted by York University Libraries and led by York’s Dean of Libraries, Joy Kirchner, who also sits on CARL’s Advancing Research Committee. Hi Heather, I have pasted an email below that links to two books that might help (backstory included). Plus, there is this: Histoires d'Avenirs: Science-fiction pour le cours de français niveaux intermédiaire et avancé<http://dx.doi.org/10.15760/pdxopen-12>, by Annabelle Dolidon and Stéphanie Roulon. Stories of Avenirs is a textbook based on nine French science fiction news targeted at an audience of foreign (intermediate and advanced) learners but also a native audience wishing to deepen its knowledge of modern science fiction - after a preliminary chapter which recalls the historical bases of the genre. The manual proposes a holistic approach (stylistic, linguistic, and intercultural) and asks for critical thinking through reading, interpretation, conversation, research and presentations, with a twofold objective: to develop French language skills in contemporary subjects through fiction; and to introduce French and francophone science fiction to foreign learners. I'm writing to let you know that, with Rajiv's (copied) help, KU Libraries was recently able to work with the author of 2 intro french texts to make them open. Both were conventionally published, but went out of print, which reverted the rights back to the authors, and now the authors have agreed to open (CC-BY-NC) licensing for them. The meet the OTL criteria and we'd love to see them included so they can be more fully utilized. I realize they're a little dated, but I would guess they're still fine for intro instruction and at least they're licensed to allow for modernizing now. Plus, as the UMN kids say: "I figured French hadn't changed that much." Let me know if you need any more information.
