Calls in this series typically take place on the third Wednesday of most months. While this month’s discussion will be primarily in English, bilingual moderators will be on hand to help ensure participants are able to contribute in the official language of their choice.
Whether you’re an OECCCC regular or new to the group, please join us, settle in with your beverage of choice and prepare for some coast-to-coast sharing and networking.

This message is sent on behalf of Donna Langille (donna.langille(a)ubc.ca) of UBC Okanagan.
In December 2015, Daniel Heath Justice began a Twitter campaign to share the names of Indigenous writers. The reason for his efforts was to: “… push back against the frequent assumptions that our literary history is any less complex, robust, or diverse than that of other peoples" (Daniel Heath Justice, Why Indigenous Literatures Matter?<https://www.wlupress.wlu.ca/Books/W/Why-Indigenous-Literatures-Matter2>).
In solidarity with his efforts, Honouring Indigenous Writers<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/> is a yearly event to increase awareness and coverage of Indigenous literature.
This year, the organizing team has put together a schedule of free events and activities designed for virtual participation throughout the month of March 2022. The events include:
* Author readings <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> by Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm and Dallas Hunt, Joshua Whitehead, Kim Senklip Harvey, and more
* An interactive workshop and walk<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels> with Peter Morin, titled “Words to Give Back: Words that have lifted us up“
* Self-paced Weekly Wikipedia Challenges<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/activities> to increase the coverage of Indigenous authors
* Wikipedia training and drop-in Zoom sessions<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels>
* A presentation<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels> by Dr. Aubrey Hanson and Dr. Erin Spring on Books to Build on: Indigenous Literatures for Learning
* And a social media campaign on Twitter<https://twitter.com/HIW_Wiki>
These events and activities are free and open to anyone to participate. Please join us at our kickoff event and reading on March 7, 2022<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> and learn more about the other events we have planned! You can also read more at the HIW<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca> website.
We would also appreciate your support of the event by helping to promote it through your listservs, social media accounts, and other spaces to help raise awareness of Indigenous literature and engage in open community knowledge creation.
The event team has developed a number of social media assets in a variety of sizes for ease of sharing. The assets can be downloaded here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SE0a-45pOdjLIvUtXIKI7a7XUjOAtUxA?us…
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and thank you in advance for any support you can give in making this event a success. Thank you to event sponsors, the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies, UBC Library (Vancouver and Okanagan), UBC Public Humanities Hub (Vancouver and Okanagan), BCcampus, University of Calgary Libraries and Cultural Resources, and Indigenous Programs and Services UBC Okanagan.
Best,

Hi All,
I'm excited to share SAIT's Open Education Week activities. We are still online for our classes and events, so two very talented students have developed the following online asynchronous activities that anyone can access:
* The OER Mythbuster Word Search<https://libguides.sait.ca/c.php?g=728509&p=5225733> includes pop-up explanations for common OER myths.
* The digital escape room, An "Open" Secret at the Reg Erhardt Library<https://forms.gle/Qxxg3dsj2mvqZqjw8>, has users follow a series of clues and puzzles to find their way out of the library. Current students can win a prize when they complete the escape room.
Feel free to link to these resources. Our general calendar of events is available at https://libguides.sait.ca/OEWeek

Oki, Amba'wastitch, Danit'ada, Tân'si, Hello. We would like to acknowledge that SAIT is situated on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy. The City of Calgary encompasses a region that the Blackfoot tribes of Southern Alberta described as Moh'kinsstis, meaning 'Elbow,' in reference to its location at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. Since time immemorial, this region was a traditional gathering place for the tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy. We are meeting/gathered on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which, today encompasses the Indigenous people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta: the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina, the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, the Northwest Métis Homeland - Region 3.

Dear colleagues,
Join BCcampus for a Women in Trades webinar<https://bccampus.ca/event/women-in-trades/>!
This is an open event for women in the skilled trades (apprentices, journey-people, and faculty) to gather for the purpose of sharing ideas, experiences, success stories, and struggles with being in the skilled trades. Building communities of practice is essential to the successful journey from apprentice to graduate. We will be hosting a few female trades faculty to share their stories and ideas on how we can encourage and promote more women to enter and, more importantly, complete their training and education in the skilled trades.
This event is on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. PST. Register for this webinar online<https://bccampus.ca/event/women-in-trades/>.

Dear colleagues,
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that we are growing our team by hiring an additional Open Education Strategist. This is a full-time and ongoing position located within the Teaching & Learning Commons<https://www.kpu.ca/teaching-and-learning> at Kwantlen Polytechnic University<https://www.kpu.ca/> (KPU). See: https://tre.tbe.taleo.net/tre01/ats/careers/v2/viewRequisition?org=JT63GS&c…
The Open Education Strategist provides project management and support for various open education initiatives and direct pedagogical consultation and technical training to KPU educators and programs on how to discover, adopt, adapt, or create open educational resources (OER) and how to design learning experiences that integrate principles of open pedagogy. The incumbent oversees the regular collection, management, and reporting of data for the Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program, plans the Open Education Research Institute, and provides support to OER grantees, Open Pedagogy Fellows, and Open Education Research Fellows. Through consultations, materials and training, the incumbent communicates open education trends and practices to educators and peers. Collaborating with Teaching and Learning Commons staff, librarians, and other stakeholders within and outside of KPU, this position advances, supports, and evaluates open educational practices for KPU.
Qualified candidates will have current knowledge of Creative Commons licenses and how to discover, adopt, revise, and remix OER educational resources (OER). A demonstrated ability to create or adapt OER using open education tools (e.g., Pressbooks, H5P, etc.), current knowledge of open pedagogy (e.g., renewable assignments), and the ability to design, develop and deliver information, resources and training on open educational practices is required. A Bachelor’s degree is required. A specialization in Communications, Education, Marketing, Educational Technology, or Library & Information Science would be an asset. This is a unionized (BCGEU) position that includes benefits.
KPU has five campuses located in the Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia and offers bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and citations in more than 140 programs. Almost 20,000 students annually attend courses at KPU campuses in Surrey, Richmond, Langley, Cloverdale, and Civic Plaza.
The University welcomes and encourages applications from women, visible minorities, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation, and persons of any gender identity or gender expression. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
A review of applications will begin on January 21, 2022; however, the position will remain open until filled.
Please feel free to share this posting widely. I would be happy to address any questions about this position.
Thank you very much,
Rajiv

instructors, librarians, students, instructional designers, etc.).
This month, we are bringing the Canadian open education community together
for a discussion on *What Are You Planning for Open Education Week?* This
month’s OECCCC is an * active participation session* where you will have an
opportunity to share and brainstorm ideas for group discussion.
Calls in this series typically take place on the third Wednesday of most
months. While this month’s discussion will be primarily in English,
bilingual moderators will be on hand to help ensure participants are able
to contribute in the official language of their choice.
Whether you’re an OECCCC regular or new to the group, please join us,
settle in with your beverage of choice and prepare for some coast-to-coast
sharing and networking.
If you can’t attend this meeting but would like to know about future OECCCC
events (and receive other Canadian OE news), please send your name,
institutional email address, position, and post-secondary institution or
organization to opentext(a)bccampus.ca, and ask to be added to the CanadaOER
listserv.

Subject: Re: Question: Microsoft Template and Copyright
Greetings Friends:
I reached out to our Creative Commons (CC) lawyers to get their opinion on this important question.
Disclaimer: This is not legal advice.
(1) Their comments on your questions:
-----------------
I would say that any art elements that are under a Microsoft license
that does not allow relicensing under a CC license should be clearly
marked; that the clip art can be incorporated with a presentation that
is otherwise CC-licensed but those elements would need to be marked
separately.
By templates I'm thinking you mean layouts that include
some sort of stock designs, and not just layout placement? I'd
consider that the same as clip art to the extent they include
copyrightable art and designs; some that are just simple placement
guides and do not really include art I think would be harder to say
are copyrightable at all.
-----------------
(2) CC will reach out to Microsoft in early 2022 to ask this question, and to check in on their work and plans related to open licensing.
(3) As a practical matter - if you use MS powerpoint to create slides, and you want to be extra safe - you might want to include some of this info in your attribution statements - either at the beginning or the end of the powerpoint slide deck.
For example:
Unless otherwise noted, [Title - or "this presentation"] by: [Author] is licensed under CC BY 4.0<https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/> [or other license].
Templates and clipart are by Microsoft: all rights reserved copyright.
Or something similar.
(4) You can skip this problem altogether by using LibreOffice.<https://www.libreoffice.org/>
Wishing you all a Happy Holidays!

Thanks so much for sharing what you found in the EULA/Service Agreements, Jin!! I agree that this is a really good question. Here's what I'm curious about:
* In 2007, Microsoft partnered with Creative Commons to create an add-in that allows Windows users to embed Creative Commons licenses directly into Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13303>. What's the status of Microsoft's relationship with Creative Commons right now? It sounds like this add-in was a positive collaboration<https://creativecommons.org/2006/06/21/microsoftandcreativecommonsreleaseto…>; is there any further collaboration planned?
* Given that Microsoft encourages users to search for and use openly licensed images when authoring slides, I'm curious why Microsoft-owned v. copyright-free content isn't more clearly labeled in the authoring software interface itself. Searching through the different license terms, I don't see guidance on use of pre-built slide templates, which is worrying for users hoping to share open and accessible slide decks.
* Jin, your suggestion to port to a royalty-free template is a great idea! I'm also concerned about the additional time/labor required for clean up and for ensuring that accessibility features like alt text carry over. It would be awesome if Microsoft was more transparent about its options for openly licensing content; lack of transparency is definitely a barrier for users, especially for those who are new to open education. Is there an existing query about this on Microsoft support that we could comment on and follow?
Thanks all!

Hello All,
I did a little bit of research on this just because it is such a good question and found the following:
* Microsoft no longer offers clipart; however, according to their website<https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/insert-icons-in-microsoft-office…>, their “icons are free to use; there's no royalty or copyright.”
* Their various EULA/Services Agreements<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement> are byzantine (as can be expected) and appears to depend a lot on 1) what type of license you are using and 2) who created the content. For example, Microsoft explicitly states “When you share Your Content with other people, you understand that they may be able to, on a worldwide basis, use, save, record, reproduce, broadcast, transmit, share and display Your Content for the purpose that you made Your Content available on the Services without compensating you.” However, this does not apply to copyrighted materials owned by Microsoft or third party vendors and Microsoft explicitly states that Microsoft products are for “your personal, noncommercial use” unless otherwise specified by your license whether it be commercial or educational. I would highly encourage the person to visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/useterms/ to see if they can find the specific license that applies to them OR just port their work to a royalty free template or their own design since I think there might be risks involved with repackaging a Microsoft or potentially third party owned template and releasing it under an open license.

My institutional version of PowerPoint won't let me see the EULA, but according to https://office-watch.com/2016/office-licence-all-35000-words-of-it/, a version of the EULA says "you may not: ... (ii) grant your customers rights to further license or distribute the media elements" which would preclude any open licensing.

Hello,
I attended a faculty workshop today promoting OER and the question came up - if someone has used a Microsoft powerpoint template and clipart in their presentation, may that person provide an open license for their presentation?
Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Dear colleagues,
The submission deadline for OTESSA 2022 has been extended<https://otessa.org/news/otessa22-final-deadline-extended-to-january-15/> until January 15, 2022.
The Open/Technology, Education, Scholarship and Society Association (OTESSA<https://conference.otessa.org/index.php/conference>) online conference will be held between May 16 and 19, 2022. The overarching theme is critical change, and the subthemes are the transitions of online learning and teaching; addressing the new iniquities; and sustaining positive change. There is also a wildcard subcategory for "innovative and inventive ideas around research or practice" that don't fit any of the subthemes.
As said in their call for proposals<https://otessa.org/2022/>: "OTESSA welcomes thinkers, tinkerers and designers from across disciplines and contexts who are exploring the role of open and digital technologies in education, society, and scholarship to be part of this conference gathering."
Review the OTESSA submission guidelines<https://conference.otessa.org/index.php/conference/about/submissions> and the OTESSA call for proposals<https://otessa.org/2022/> online before submitting.
