Dear colleagues,
UBC is once again running the Program for Open Scholarship and Education (POSE)<https://pose.open.ubc.ca/> in the spring 2022 semester from January to April. Registration is open to anyone in post-secondary who is interested.
POSE is a four-month flexible and blended program that will help you develop foundational knowledge of Open Scholarship, Open Education, and Open Research. POSE will explore how open copyright licenses, collaborative practices, and networked technologies have the potential to lower barriers to knowledge by making the processes and products of scholarship more distributed, transparent, and accessible.
POSE is intended for faculty, staff, postdocs, and students with an interest in open research, open access, open data and open education. The program is open to UBCO, UBCV, and non-UBC faculty, staff, and students at the post-secondary level.
You will learn about:
* Open Education
* Open Access
* Open Research
* Open Data
* Open Tools
To support participant flexibility, the program is composed of online self-paced modules that you can complete over four months. You are also required to participate in two online synchronous sessions during the program. We will also host optional sessions each month where you can engage with various practitioners in the different areas of open scholarship and meet other participants in a synchronous environment. Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
The first module will be released on January 1, 2022. The POSE kick-off session will be on January 18, 2022, and the wrap-up session will be on April 28, 2022. For more detailed information about POSE, visit the POSE home page<https://pose.open.ubc.ca/>.
To register for POSE<https://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/program-for-open-scholarship-and-educatio…>, you will need a UBC CWL (campus-wide login). If you don't already have one, you can register for a basic CWL account<https://activate.id.ubc.ca/iamweb/>.
Please share widely.

Hello Everyone!
I'm starting to plan a schedule of events for the University of Alberta's
Open Education Symposium. It will be a series of events throughout Open
Education Week (Mar 7-11, 2022).
I'm looking to do some collaborative sessions with other institutions. The
University of Alberta would handle the registration, Zoom hosting,
facilitation support, and edit/post the recording. I would ask that we do a
joint-introduction to the session and you are welcome to put the
registration and zoom on your institution's website, if you wish, to
promote as a partnership with UofA rather than sending them to the UofA
website.
So far, we have a series of lunch-hour lightning talks (3-4 presenters in a
1hr session) being planned with University of Alberta, University of
Calgary, and Thompson Rivers University. A growing list of topics we would
like to deliver include:
- Evaluating the quality of open pedagogies
- OER speed-dating!
- Open EdTech - tools review
- open and participatory technologies
- Pressbooks, H5P, and using them in class
- "Do open pedagogies have to be either open or closed? What is in the
middle?"
- ZTC - common barriers when implementing (course-level)
- Universal design, OER, and course design
- Demo: How to change your course to incorporate OER
If you're interested in collaborating, I would love to hear from you!
Thanks,

Hello everyone,
I am delighted to share this new article in the International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, co-authored with my wonderful BC colleagues Tannis Morgan (VCC), Elizabeth Childs (RRU), Christina Hendricks (UBC), Michelle Harrison (TRU), and Irwin DeVries (RRU), in which we share a new institutional self-assessment tool for open educational practices (which we have applied to our 5 institutions). We hope this is helpful to you as you advance this work within your own institutional contexts.

Dear colleagues,
You are invited to attend the following session, Making OER Count: Incorporating OER into the Tenure and Promotion Process<https://bccampus.ca/event/making-oer-count-incorporating-oer-into-the-tenur…> on Thursday, December 2, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Pacific.
Description:
Anyone familiar with the open educational resources (OER) community knows that questions about the role of OER work in tenure, promotion, and reappointment are constant at conferences and on listservs where OER practitioners and administrators congregate. However, as criteria for tenure and promotion vary greatly between different types of institutions – and even between different departments within an institution – answering these questions can be daunting. An adaptable advisory model, called the OER Contributions Matrix [PDF]<https://www.doers3.org/uploads/1/3/2/2/132273765/the_oer_contributions_matr…>, has been created to approach this conundrum and to help guide faculty as they attempt to include their OER work in their tenure and promotion portfolios. The tool was developed by a working group within Driving OER Sustainability for Student Success (DOERS3), a collaborative of state-, province-, and system-wide OER initiatives that work together to help the OER community realize the potential of OER in a sustainable fashion. During this session members of DOERS3 will provide insight into the OER Contributions Matrix, explain how it came about, and share some potential uses for the document, including a short brainstorming session on how the matrix can be adapted for use at local institutions.
Facilitators:
Amanda Coolidge (she/her) is director of Open Education at BCcampus in B.C., Canada. She leads the province’s initiatives in open education, from open textbooks to open pedagogy, and with a team of eight other people works across B.C. to enhance access for students. Amanda has a master’s degree in educational technology and many years of experience as an instructional designer at various universities across Canada. Amanda has worked in open education in Calgary, Alberta; Nairobi, Kenya; and B.C.
Andrew McKinney (he/him) is the OER coordinator for City University of New York’s (CUNY) Office of Library Services (OLS). For OLS he administers the CUNY OER Initiative, a $4-million-a-year program that aims to increase the use of OER and open pedagogical practices across CUNY’s 24 campuses. He leverages his 15 years of working across CUNY as a graduate student, adjunct faculty member, educational technologist, faculty development specialist, and instructional designer to support CUNY’s librarians, faculty, staff, and students as they adopt, adapt, and create OER.
This event is free. To ensure we have an inclusive and welcoming environment for all, we’ve added registration to all our sessions.

Subject: [lpc-l] 2022 Library Publishing Forum Call For Proposals now open!
The Library Publishing Forum<https://librarypublishing.org/forum/> is an annual conference bringing together representatives from libraries engaged in or considering publishing initiatives to define and address major questions and challenges; to identify and document collaborative opportunities; and to strengthen and promote this community of practice. The Forum is sponsored by the Library Publishing Coalition, but you do not need to be a member of the LPC to attend.
The Library Publishing Coalition (LPC) is now accepting proposals for the 2022 Library Publishing Forum! After the success of our Virtual Forums in 2020 and 2021, we are thrilled to offer both in-person and online options this year, with a virtual preconference the week of May 16, 2022, followed by the in-person Library Publishing Forum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania May 25–26, 2022. We invite proposals for both of these events, and warmly encourage proposals from first-time presenters and representatives of small and emerging publishing programs. Proposals may address any topic of interest to the library publishing community. The proposal deadline is November 15, 2021.
Proposal submissions for both the virtual preconference and the in-person Forum are welcome from LPC members and nonmembers, including library employees, university press employees, scholars, students, and other scholarly communication and publishing professionals. We welcome proposals from first-time presenters and representatives of small and emerging publishing programs.
We are committed to expanding the diversity of perspectives we hear from at the Library Publishing Forum. Working towards some of the “Continuing Initiatives” from the LPC Roadmap for Anti-Racist Practice<https://librarypublishing.org/roadmap-for-anti-racist-practice/>, this year we ask all proposals to explicitly address how they are inclusive of multiple perspectives, address DEI, or incorporate anti-racist and anti-oppressive approaches. We also encourage speakers to provide us with information about themselves that will assist us in identifying proposals that balance geography, identity, and representation, especially from marginalized groups. Presentations about specific communities should include members of that community in their speaker list, and for sessions with multiple speakers, we seek to avoid all-white and all-male panels. Everyone submitting a presentation will also have an opportunity to complete a brief, anonymous demographic survey so we can better understand who is submitting proposals to LPF.
Learn more and submit a proposal<https://librarypublishing.org/program/>.

Dear colleagues,
Several BCcampus websites, including BCcampus Open Education (open.bccampus.ca), are currently unavailable due to recent power outages. We do not have an estimated time of when the sites will be online. However, our technical team is working on resolving this issue as soon as possible.
Affected sites (that we know of):
bccampus.ca and subpages (e.g., covid19.bccampus.ca)
open.bccampus.ca
bcoel.ca
bctlc.ca
etug.ca
Sites NOT affected:
pressbooks.bccampus.ca
opentextbc.ca
solr.bccampus.ca
tlpd.bccampus.ca
While the B.C. Open Textbook Collection (which is housed on open.bccampus.ca) is not available right now, if you have the direct link to a particular textbook that is in one of our Pressbooks instances, it should be available, as Pressbooks and SOL*R are unaffected.
We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve these issues.
Thank you,

Hi All,
An instructor contacted recently with the following request:
We are creating a Pop Culture Sociology course and we are looking for an OER. Course Description:
Using a multi-disciplinary approach, students will explore and examine popular culture as one of the most significant cultural and social agents in contemporary society. Learners will study the emergence of pop culture studies and a range of diverse theoretical approaches including critical studies of gender, sexuality and race. Students will consider a variety of mediums such as music, video games, social media, art, film/television, fashion and celebrity. Finally, learners will study and reflect on the role of popular culture in the development of individual identity and group/community identity and action
I've checked the usual locations (OpenStax, OERCommons, MERLOT, BCcampus, eCampus Ontario, OASIS, Open Textbook Library, OASIS, OpenOregon, OAPEN) but I wanted to reach out in case there is a gem in a local repository. I think the instructor is looking for something equivalent to John Storey's textbook:
https://www.routledge.com/Cultural-Theory-and-Popular-Culture-An-Introducti…
Any leads are appreciated!

Subject: Looking for a French-language editor
Hi all,
We would like to recruit a French language editor to join the editorial team - our CFP specifies that we will accept submissions in either official language, and we need to provide the same level of review and editing for French and English submissions. Please share with anyone in your network who you think might be interested, and ask people to forward! Description below.
A group of us in the RDM community are developing an open RDM textbook – our goal is to create a comprehensive, peer-reviewed academic educational resource suited to the Canadian context – read more about the project and view the call for proposals here<https://www1.rebus.community/#/project/d87dea3d-1c54-47e5-9c7a-dfe71b8463f4>. Current project leads / editors are librarians Emily Carlisle-Johnston, Elizabeth Hill and Kristi Thompson. We are looking for a French-language editor to join our team – we will accept chapter submissions in either English or French. The French-language editor would be asked to take the lead on reviewing chapter submissions in French, and supervise production of the French edition of the text. Other roles and responsibilities for the fourth member of the editorial team would depend on background and interest.
Please note that we are all volunteers and this is not a paid position, however we have secured funding for project management and administrative assistance. Please send expressions of interest to rdmoerteam(a)gmail.com<mailto:rdmoerteam@gmail.com>.

This message is sent on behalf of Nicole Allen, SPARC.
Dear colleagues,
I’m thrilled to announce the launch of InclusiveAccess.org<https://www.inclusiveaccess.org/>: a community-driven initiative to raise awareness of the facts about automatic textbook billing.
Little known five years ago, Inclusive Access has taken off as a sales model that automatically adds the cost of digital textbooks into students’ tuition and fees. While this model is intended to address some of the challenges with high textbook costs, it is also creating new challenges for students and faculty.
How exactly does Inclusive Access work? Does it really save students money? What about this kind of program is “inclusive”? Straightforward answers to these questions aren’t always easy to find.
InclusiveAccess.org is a one-stop-shop for information, tools, and other resources to help administrators, faculty, students, and policymakers make informed decisions about Inclusive Access and its implications for the campus community.
InclusiveAccess.org was developed by SPARC with generous support from the Michelson 20MM Foundation<http://20mm.org/>. Partners<http://inclusiveaccess.org/about-us> include AAC&U, Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, Creative Commons, DigiTex, Student PIRGs, Open Education Global, and OpenStax. Other mission-aligned organizations are encouraged to join.
If conversations about Inclusive Access are happening in your campus or state, we hope you will consider sharing this resource far and wide! To stay in the loop, sign up for emails<https://www.inclusiveaccess.org/subscribe> and follow @TextbookBilling<https://twitter.com/textbookbilling> on Twitter.
Cheers,
Nicole Starr Allen
