Hi Jessica,
Anita Walz from Virginia Tech recently organized a sprint to develop a question bank for this textbook for Fundamentals of Business: https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/textbooks/fundamentals-of-business
I believe that should be available soon.

Subject: [Canadaoer] Instructor support materials for Intro to Business text?
Hi All,
I’ve been given the opportunity to pitch an OER textbook for an Intro to Business class alongside the typical publishers. I know that this committee’s biggest issue with OER is the (perceived) lack of instructional materials (instructor test bank, student self-tests, simulations, slide sets, etc.). I’m aware of materials from OpenStax, eCampusOntario, and BCcampus but I’d really like to wow the committee with other possible solutions.
If you know of any additional ancillary materials for Intro to Business topics (esp. the OpenStax text), I would love to hear about them!
Thanks for your time,
Jessica

Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd share news of the recent release of our first open textbook at Dalhousie University. Hopefully this is the first of many more to come. Additional background information on the project can be found here https://www.dal.ca/news/2018/11/27/the-future-is-open.html

Hi everyone,
Sorry in advance if you've already seen this...but we're just trying to get the word out as much as possible!
I'm part of a research team doing an environmental scan of business open educational resources (OER). This scan is part of eCampusOntario's<https://www.ecampusontario.ca/> "Open at Scale" initiative.
This scan is meant to identify existing (and soon-to-be released) business OER that can be used in college and university-level business courses by post-secondary institutions based in Ontario, Canada.
The first step of this project involves reaching out to librarians, instructional designers, faculty, and other OER advocates to identify if there are any:
a) pre-existing environmental scans of business OER that can be updated by the research team;
b) core sources of business OER for the post-secondary level
We've created a survey and we'd love to receive some input from you. It should take approximately 5 to 15 minutes to complete: https://goo.gl/forms/55gmkso00lqHKmFK2
We would appreciate a quick turnaround on responses - ideally by Wednesday, February 27, 2019.
Final thing: Please help us get this survey into the hands as many people as possible by forwarding it to your colleagues and relevant listservs (please note, this survey has already been sent to the following listservs - SPARC OER, ABEL, BUS-Lib, Ontario’s LibOER).
Thanks,
Stephanie

I’m curious is anyone in Canada is doing anything like option one in this post?

I keep hearing from departments that they wouldn’t need to use homework systems from commercial publishers if they had more funding for TAs.

Hello all,
BCcampus is looking to implement a review process for books that we are interested in adding to the collection. Up until now, we have taken that on ourselves. But we often find ourselves looking for the opinion of subject-matter experts before we agree to add a book to the collection.
We are soliciting reviews on the following open textbooks on topics in philosophy and project management for engineers :
* [ http://builds.openlogicproject.org/courses/phil379/ | Sets, Logic, Computation ]
* [ http://forallx.openlogicproject.org/ | forall x: Calgary ]
* [ https://wisc.pb.unizin.org/technicalpm/ | Technical Project Management in Living and Geometric Order: A Practical Perspective ]
These reviews are meant to help guide our decision process. In a review, we will ask you the following:
* to rate a textbook in five different areas from "very poor" to "excellent"
* whether you recommend the textbook
* for what courses and levels the book is appropriate for.
There will also be an opportunity to provide additional comments. These reviews will not be posted publically, and we expect that they should not take longer than 30 minutes. An honorarium of $100 will be provided for each completed review. We will accept applications from instructors with subject-matter expertise who teach at any Canadian post-secondary institution.
Instructors who are interested in reviewing one of these textbooks can email [ mailto:booksreviews@bccampus.ca | booksreviews(a)bccampus.ca ] from their institutional email address. Provide the book you are interested in reviewing, the institution you teach at, and list the courses that you teach that align with the selected textbook. We are only looking for one review per textbook, so reviewers will be accepted on a first-come basis provided they meet the requirements.
If none of these textbooks are in your subject area but you'd be willing to review future textbooks, please email [ mailto:bookreviews@bccampus.ca | bookreviews(a)bccampus.ca ] with the subject areas that you have expertise in and I'll make a note to contact you if we have future books in need of review in that subject area.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Best,
Josie

Hi Everyone,
I'm thinking about doing a webinar during Open Education Week where I draw
out examples of "open leadership" from all the great work on OER happening
across Canada or Alberta (depending on who responds!). It will be during
Open Education Week, March 4 - 8. Date and time TBD.
1. Do this
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b3Aa4rzV5TA1fEDtg6eEQEssFmt2v7Gcg_fVXRe…>
self
assessment
2. Be ready to share some personal reflection about your results
3. Be ready to answer a few questions (I'll share them to you in advance)
4. Be ready to share a little bit about your project
I'm going to base it off of Mozilla's open leadership framework (here
<https://mozilla.github.io/open-leadership-training-series/>). The project
you share about could be your work creating, adapting, promoting, using,
supporting, or anything else about Open Education or Open Educational
Resources. If it's about OE, I will probably ask you a few additional
questions to differentiate between OE and OER. :-)
Note: I will submit this to be recorded and shared by the CC Education
Platform Network. My goal is for each person to be on video, if possible.
ALSO - if you're interested but can't commit to a live webinar, let me know
anyway. Maybe I'll do a non-live podcast to release later!

Hi All,
I'm hoping that someone has a lead on OER content for an introductory survey course in science (SCIE 2240: Science Past, Present, and Future). The outcomes are broad and include:
* Describe the steps in the scientific method
* Describe a series of experiments from the history of science that illustrate the elements of scientific method.
* Define accuracy, precision, systematic error, and random error as they apply to measurements.
* Employ appropriate units for physical measurements.
* Define a hypothesis test and identify its components.
* Make a conclusion from a formal hypothesis test based on sample data.
* Create a written group report on a modern scientific result and the consequences to the prevailing scientific theory or model.
* Discuss current trends in science.
(This is not an exhaustive list)
I have checked OpenStax, Open Textbook Library, OER Commons, BCcampus, Cool4Ed.org, OASIS, and Mason OER Metafinder. I have found a chapter here or there which might be re-written to fit these outcomes. However, I would love to find 2-3 books (possible topics: history of science, scientific method and research techniques, and current/future trends in science) that would cover these topics more comprehensively.
I certainly do not expect to find all of this in one place. Any leads would be appreciated!
Cheers,
Jessica

Dear Canada OER Community,
The team behind the University of Alberta’s Opening Up Copyright
instructional modules is pleased to share an update on the series along
with several new openly licensed modules and renewed opportunities to
contribute.
Building on the initial two modules (Images and Public Domain) released in
March 2018, we have now produced six additional modules on the following
topics:
· Open Licensing and Creative Commons
· Other Types of Intellectual Property (IP)
· Theoretical Foundations for Copyright
· CCH v. LSUC
· SOCAN v. Bell, and
· Section 13: Ownership of Copyright
All of the modules can be found here:
https://sites.library.ualberta.ca/copyright/
We’d also like to emphasize that these modules are published under a
Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence so that they can be adopted
and adapted by anyone. On the page for each module you will find a link to
the associated script and slides, to allow for adaptation. The scripts and
slides are also made available under a CC-BY licence.
More information about the series is available on the “About” page (
https://sites.library.ualberta.ca/copyright/about/)
In addition, we would like to highlight the Opening Up Copyright Community
Pages (
https://docs.google.com/document/d/17Ul4YeOovdLOEaczPK7RipG_OgOd7etOcJI8ppT…)
The Community Pages provide an overview of the entire suite of modules to
be developed as part of the series, and also indicates which modules are
currently under development. Furthermore, we encourage you to contribute
to the individual module pages, where we hope to collect your ideas,
feedback or suggestions. Please consider sharing suggestions for Learning
Objectives, ideas for Narratives or Contextual Stories, Test Questions,
Links to Useful Resources, or Other Suggestions for modules that interest
you. You also have the option of including your name on these pages, so
that we can provide attribution for your contributions at the end of the
module. Completed modules will be revised in the summer of 2019, based on
feedback provided in the Community Pages or sent directly to
copyright(a)ualberta.ca with the subject line “OER Copyright Module.”
The Opening Up Copyright instructional modules series receives funding
through the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s Teaching and Learning

Hi All,
I have an instructor who is very keen on developing a Business Information Systems OER textbook from the Canadian perspective.
We researched current OERs and have found a couple in the US that he could use as a launch point for his work. However, I know that business is a very popular area for new development and I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of a similar project (completed or in progress) at their institution or organization.
Thanks,

Hi Heather,
The NC clause refers only to the use, not to the entity. So even though her practice may be a commercial entity, the use of handing out patient education materials, to me, seems to be a non-commercial purpose. If there is no payment or compensation directly connected with the exchange, then you should be in the clear.

Good Monday morning everyone.
I have a question about a CC-BY-NC license. This module from NOBA carries that license (https://nobaproject.com/modules/the-nervous-system) I’m married to a chiropractor who would like to take content from the book and put it into some patient education materials to provide to patients for free. Her practice is obviously a business and she’s paid by patients for care, but not for the patient education materials. Can she still take content from this module for this purpose? I’m unsure so want to check.

I've had an instructor ask for help locating OERs related to shop safety and power tool use. His exact message: We are planning to put together a "module" or "document/policy" regarding safe use of tablesaws and jointers in our Carpentry and Cabinetmaker shops and wondered what may be available.
I've look at MERLOT, Alberta OER, SkillsCommons, OERCommons, OASIS, BCcampus, and the University of Hawai'i. I've found materials related to OSHA, occupational safety, and CCOHS, but not a specific shop manual for carpentry or a manual for power tools. (I need to give the U of H textbook a closer look as some parts may be relevant). I'm hoping someone might have a lead for me!
Thanks for any assistance,

When open textbooks are replaced with new editions, PDFs of the reviews for the older edition are now compiled in a zip file and posted by the new version of the textbook. A README file is included in the zipped file explaining this arrangement and the reason for it.

Subject: [Canadaoer] Looking for OER intro videos
Hi All,
SAIT is hosting a OER forum in a couple of weeks and I’d like to introduce the concept of OERs to the audience via a video. I’ve been reviewing content on YouTube but I thought it would be worth asking here if there are any outstanding videos that you have produced or used in the past. I’m looking for something short (around 5 minutes) and preferably from the Canadian perspective for facts or stats (or at least not exclusively U.S. focused).
Thanks,
Jessica

Hello all.
Our College of Engineering is doing a major revamp of their first year curriculum. As part of that they have set a goal to reduce textbook costs for students and will be considering OER when they can find appropriate materials. They are also looking for a homework system(s). I’m trying to persuade them to avoid commercial systems since that will simply replace money going to publishers for textbooks with money going to publishers for homework systems. I’m wondering if anyone might have some criteria that they provide instructors / departments with for determining if the OER available will meet their NEEDS (wants are another story) and what modifications might be necessary, as well as what criteria they might use for determining appropriate ancillary resources and tools. Their existing criteria for the homework system would not be found in any existing systems, so I need to show them some more realistic criteria.
Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Good Friday afternoon everyone. I have a nursing instructor who is looking to replace a commercial textbook currently used for a course in Gerontology. Her colleagues are using Gerontological Nursing & Healthy Aging by Touhy, Jett, Boscart, and McCleary, while students have found Gerontological Nursing Competencies For Care (4th Edition) by Mauk more useful. She would prefer that her students not have to buy a textbook. Does anyone know of any good existing OER that might replace the textbook?
If not, she had expressed interest that such a book should be created (big dreams).

We have an instructor from our English Department who is considering using Cove. Does anyone have any experience with it? She’s looking into it, but my browsers don’t want to load it because of a lack of a “secure connection”. From what she’s told me students need to each pay $10 to collaborate on what would be an open access publication. I’m trying to steer her toward using a wiki or Pressbooks or such tools, but need some background / feedback on Cove to best make my case.
Thank you.

Hi All,
Do folks working with OER textbooks have any suggestions for a Canadian print-on-demand publisher to use for print copies of these textbooks? I have print copies of BCcampus texts but I'd like additional texts to use as demo copies for OER presentations. (I'm also checking with our campus print shop but I'd like to know of other options.)
Cheers,

Hello CanadaOER,
I’ve been lurking here for the past few weeks, and wanted to mention that I’ve entered the fray of this discussion list. I’ve posted below a news item we published today, and I wanted to thank once again the librarians who joined us for an exciting one-day discussion to identify opportunities for action within research libraries.

CARL Brings Together OER Librarian Leaders to Identify Priorities for Action (http://www.carl-abrc.ca/news/carl-brings-together-oer-librarian-leaders-to-…)
September 10, 2018. – On August 22, 2018, a group of librarians committed to advancing open educational resources (OER) came together at York University for a full day of discussion towards enhancing Canadian library and librarian involvement in post-secondary OER.
The Canadian Association of Research Libraries has been monitoring the development of OER for several years, and in 2014 carried out a survey of its members regarding their involvement in OER, subsequently producing a working paper, Open Textbooks: Opportunities for Research Libraries<http://www.carl-abrc.ca/doc/open_educational_resources.pdf>.
Four years later, it is clear that library involvement in OER (and open textbooks specifically) has increased substantially. Provincial funding programs and individual projects have been developed across Canada aimed at lowering the cost of student learning materials while also offering instructors accessible content that they can tailor and develop to suit their evolving pedagogical practices. In 2012 BCcampus launched Canada’s first publicly funded open textbook development project, followed by initiatives in Alberta, Manitoba, and most recently through Ontario’s eCampusOntario. Individual OER projects aimed at supporting a specific course or area of study have also cropped up at post-secondary educational institutions throughout Canada, often the result of collaborations involving faculty, librarians, and centres for teaching and learning. Internationally, SPARC has taken a leading role in OER and open education advocacy and training, offering in 2017-2018 a first instance of its in-depth Open Education Leadership Program<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/> for librarians (a second offering is set to launch this month).
To identify needs at the national level related to OER involvement by research libraries, CARL invited ten emerging and established library leaders in OER to a one-day working meeting.
The meeting was hosted by York University Libraries and led by York’s Dean of Libraries, Joy Kirchner, who also sits on CARL’s Advancing Research Committee. Also representing CARL was Lise Brin, Program Officer working primarily in open scholarship. The invited participants were:
* Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education, SPARC
* Dianne Cmor, Associate University Librarian, Teaching & Learning, Concordia University
* Inba Kehoe, Copyright Officer and Scholarly Communications Librarian, University of Victoria
* Maude Laplante-Dubé, Bibliothécaire-conseil - Diffusion de la recherche, Université Laval
* Ann Ludbrook, Copyright and Scholarly Engagement Librarian, Ryerson University
* Hope Power, Teaching & Learning Librarian, Simon Fraser University
* Stephanie Quail, Business Librarian, York University
* Lillian Rigling, Program Coordinator, eCampus Ontario
* Ali Versluis, Open Education Librarian, University of Guelph
* Amanda Wakaruk, Copyright Librarian, University of Alberta
Some of the ideas arising from this day of discussion included: creating a “bootcamp” for librarian leaders in OER based on a train-the-trainer philosophy, implementing a distributed regional network for increasing capacity for OER advocacy and creation within libraries, forging stronger relationships with other OER stakeholder groups, and creating a statement that articulates the case for library involvement in OER. These ideas will be brought to CARL’s Advancing Research Committee and Strengthening Capacity Committee for consideration in the next weeks with a view to confirming next steps into advancing the library involvement in the OER movement in Canada.
– 30 –
CARL members include Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries as well as two national libraries. Enhancing research and higher education are at the heart of its mission. CARL develops the capacity to support this mission, promotes effective and sustainable scholarly communication, and public policy that enables broad access to scholarly information.

* Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education, SPARC
* Dianne Cmor, Associate University Librarian, Teaching & Learning, Concordia University

Happy Friday everyone.
I have the opportunity to add a couple of questions to the bank instructors and departments use for the end-of-course student satisfaction surveys that our university does. Does anyone have any examples of such questions they’ve included?
Thank you and have a great long weekend.

Hi Heather,
I have pasted an email below that links to two books that might help (backstory included).
Plus, there is this:
Histoires d'Avenirs: Science-fiction pour le cours de français niveaux intermédiaire et avancé<http://dx.doi.org/10.15760/pdxopen-12>, by Annabelle Dolidon and Stéphanie Roulon.
Stories of Avenirs is a textbook based on nine French science fiction news targeted at an audience of foreign (intermediate and advanced) learners but also a native audience wishing to deepen its knowledge of modern science fiction - after a preliminary chapter which recalls the historical bases of the genre. The manual proposes a holistic approach (stylistic, linguistic, and intercultural) and asks for critical thinking through reading, interpretation, conversation, research and presentations, with a twofold objective: to develop French language skills in contemporary subjects through fiction; and to introduce French and francophone science fiction to foreign learners.
Cheers,
Rajiv

Subject: 2 French OERs
Hi Karen,
I hope you're excellent! I'm writing to let you know that, with Rajiv's (copied) help, KU Libraries was recently able to work with the author of 2 intro french texts to make them open. Both were conventionally published, but went out of print, which reverted the rights back to the authors, and now the authors have agreed to open (CC-BY-NC) licensing for them.
Dinneen, David A., Christiansen, Hope., Kernen, Madeleine., Pensec, Herve. "Au Boulot! First-Year French." Houghton Mifflin Custom Publishing. 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1808/15572
Dinneen, David A. & Kernen, Madeleine. "Chapeau! First-Year French" Wiley. 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/1808/15558
In addition to the primary textbooks, both include supplements to support instruction (exercises, etc). The meet the OTL criteria and we'd love to see them included so they can be more fully utilized. I realize they're a little dated, but I would guess they're still fine for intro instruction and at least they're licensed to allow for modernizing now.
Plus, as the UMN kids say: "I figured French hadn't changed that much." Let me know if you need any more information.
Cheers,
Josh
