Hello friends,
FYI a press release announcing our second Zed Cred (the Adult Graduation Diploma), along with zero textbook cost pathways in English, Math, Biology, and Physics Qualifying Studies just went out. See: http://www.kpu.ca/news/2018/08/29/kpu-launches-second-program-can-be-taken-…
It includes a nice promotional video for our Zed Cred programs.
Cheers,
Rajiv
Hello everyone,
Just a quick follow up to say that I haven’t received any responses to this email (nor on the Open Textbook Network’s listserv); however, I am currently investigating TAO, which is a potential solution that was suggested to me by Clint Lalonde from BCcampus: https://www.taotesting.com/tao-community-edition/
Cheers,
Rajiv

Subject: [Canadaoer] Q about question bank creation/management software
Hello everyone,
I am writing to inquire whether any of you have used software to support the authoring and management of question banks to support open textbooks?
I have used Repondus in the past (https://www.respondus.com/products/respondus/index.shtml) as well as implemented simpler options that involve writing questions in MS word using a format that can easily be imported into an LMS using an importer like http://lyceum.algonquincollege.com/quizgenerator/. The former also has a free version (Respondus LE, https://www.respondus.com/download/respondus_le.shtml) which works for authoring and managing question banks that will be used for print exams (without LMS integration), while the latter approach works for LMS-delivered quizzes but not at all for print quizzes where, for example, you want to have the ability to randomly pick items. A third option is to create questions within the LMS question bank tool itself, but that is typically a very clunky system that does not export well for print quizzes.
I am aware of online tools such as Proola (http://proola.org/) and Prendus (https://www.prendus.com/) that are geared towards collaborative question bank authoring by educators and students, respectively. Given the growing interest in creating ancillary resources to support open textbooks, I am wondering if anyone else has implemented (or even trialled) a different technological solution?
Many thanks,
Rajiv

Hello all,
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me and/or the Redstone team in the last few months about OER ecosystem sustainability. I’ve attached the final report from that effort and invite you to share the report with anyone you think will be interested. All of your input was valuable in shaping the document, and we greatly appreciate your thoughtful engagement on this topic.

I received an email from an instructor in Nutrition who would like to replace the commercial textbook currently being used. Below is a link to the current book (Food and Culture) and the course learning outcomes. Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide.
https://www.amazon.ca/Food-Culture-Kathryn-Sucher/dp/1305628055/ref=sr_1_2?…
Here are the learning outcomes from last year:
1. Explain the relationship between food, food choices, ethno cultural, and religious identity
2. Recognize the role culture plays in influencing group and individual food selection, preparation, consumption and in producing different attitudes and beliefs around food
3. Understand the impact traditional health beliefs and practices have on food choice and health
4. Gain skills in intercultural communication
5. Explore food systems and their impact on individual food choices
6. Become familiar with world religions and understand religious influences on food choice
7. Understand how food patterns of people from different cultures help them meet nutritional needs

Subject: Suggestions for physical geography open textbook
Hello there,
One of the instructors at Yukon College is looking for an open textbook for Geog 101 and potentially Geog 102. What he is looking for is basically general physical geography content, including information about the seasons, atmosphere, water, lithosphere, weather and climate, and biosphere. Doesn’t need to be related to a region in particular.
We did find some things that could work for him, but was just wondering if any of you know of materials that have been created more recently or something that you recommend.
Many thanks,

Hey all,
For sure!
For folks who may not know, the British Columbia Federation of Students (BCFS) picked up the #TextBookBrokeBC campaign, adapted some materials, and created a robust suite of new materials (digital & print).
One of the things we made was a campaign guide for students' unions to have a place to start/refer back to while running the campaign. It is a great resource for any stage of OER work! I have attached it to this email.
There is a handful of other materials and guides (classroom talk scripts, template presentations, suite of print materials, etc.), I would be more than happy to share with other students' unions who are interested in working on this. So please don't hesitate to contact me if you know of a students' union/association that would be interested.
It is important for students to raise awareness on our end and working together works!
Thanks

Hello everyone,
Before I sign off for some vacation time I wanted to share two recent developments at KPU which I hope will serve as a model for other institutions:
1. We now have a searchable field in the course timetable for Zed Cred sections. To see how this works watch this video: https://media.kpu.ca/media/Search+the+course+timetable+for+zero+textbook+co…
2. Our Senate has now approved a policy that integrates a) a search for relevant OER and b) flagging as a potential Zed Cred course in the course development & revision process. Although this seems rather technical, in practice it means that within 5 years (the course review cycle at KPU) all courses will have undergone a search for OER.
I am sharing these developments with this group because I am happy to provide guidance for anyone else seeking to achieve either of these two things.
Cheers,
Rajiv

Our students' union is developing a letter to share affordable resource

letters from their institutions that we could look to? Or

Good morning.
I received the following email this morning and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
“Hi Heather,
I have an open textbook/ ed tech question for you. Do you know of any software for making glossaries? Pressbooks has a type of page called a glossary, but doesn’t have any glossary-specific functionality. Perhaps it was intended as a placeholder. Right now the textbook just has end-matter with a long list of terms, but it’s a major job to keep track of whether a term has been listed and/or defined, and alphabetizing is all manually done. I did a quick search to see what glossary software is out there, but I was wondering if you knew off-hand about anything that is particularly reliable, and that we are unlikely to lose access to at some point in the future. Dear Canada OER Friends,
Apologies for cross posting if it occurs. You may, or may not have heard about the Cross-Canada OER mini-MOOC, Making Sense of Open Eduction. I am launching a two-week online course as part of my doctoral research from June 1-15, 2018 and would like to invite and include any educators in your region that you believe might be interested in learning more about open ed. If you can share the message below with post-secondary educators, I would be very grateful. I hope that it will be a fun and engaging learning experience for educators new to the practice of open.
Thank you for your consideration!
Best,
Jenni
If you believe there is interest, please share the following description with educators in your network:
Suggested Subject Line: Open online course about open educational resources June 1-15
Dear Teaching Community,
>From June 1-15, 2018, a global (and cross-Canada) mini-MOOC (massive open online course) called Making Sense of Open Education will take place through the OpenLearn UK Moodle platform. The course will consist of short daily lessons and activities at an introductory level. The purpose of the course is to increase awareness and use of open educational resources (OER) as part of post-secondary teaching and learning in Canada and globally. Topics will include OER, open educational practices (OEP), copyright and the Creative Commons licenses, and open tools for adaptation. A variety of experienced open educators, and friends from global regions will participate and support learning and sharing opportunities. Daily lessons will take approximately 30 minutes to complete with a targeted (and hopefully fun) daily practice opportunity to apply what you are learning. The course team and others that have already signed up look forward to your participation.
There is no cost to participate in the course. The full set of course modules will be made available on the course front page June 1 for you to download, save, and adapt as you desire if you prefer to take the course in a self-directed way.

Hi Everyone,
We have a new project at the University of Alberta where we are sourcing
free/open resources which intersects with indigenizing education in K-12
(social studies). I'm hoping to recruit some other open educators to share
their experience with the project team (instructor, doctoral student,
librarians, and me).
Faculty of Education, Elementary Education
EDEL 335 Curriculum and Pedagogy in Elementary School Social Studies
Project Lead: Sharla Peltier
This project will conduct critical review of existing First Nation Metis
and Inuit education materials in Alberta relevant to teaching Social
Studies to identify and/or customize OER for teaching of pre-service
teachers and/or classroom use by social studies elementary teachers and
faculty with appropriate Indigenous contexts in response to recent
revisions to Teaching Quality Standard #5: Applying Foundational Knowledge
about First Nations, Metis and Inuit. (Supported through the University of
Alberta OER Awards

Hello Everyone,
See the below opportunity for all Canadian post-secondary faculty.
Open Choice invites Canadian faculty to review OER for their upcoming database
Choice, a publishing unit at the Association of College and Research Libraries, plans to release a new online database of open educational resource (OER) reviews called Open Choice. The new service will feature a significant collection of critical reviews of OER targeted to teaching faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and university staff charged with acquiring digital tools for instruction (IT, instructional technologies, etc.).
We are looking for active teaching faculty who be interested in reviewing open educational materials for Open Choice. The reviews are more substantive, averaging 2,000-2,500 words, and use a structured review rubric. The rubric provides consistency in reviews and makes them easier to write. All reviews go through a formal copyediting process. We are able to provide a honorarium of $200 for each review.
If you are interested in reviewing, or have questions about Open Choice or the reviewing process, please email Melissa Karp at [ mailto:mkarp@ala-choice.org | mkarp(a)ala-choice.org ] .

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some examples of OERs being used in continuing education
programs to include in a workshop I'm doing for contract instructors in the
Faculty of Education (University of Alberta).
Currently, we plan to feature:
- Project Management open textbook
<https://opentextbc.ca/projectmanagement/> (open textbook which directly
aligns with industry accreditation and increases accessibility to the
profession outside of professional associations and publications)
- Project Management for IDs open textbook </> (co-creating with
students to again, align with industry accreditation and increase
accessibility)
- ESL (English Second Language) CBL Level 5/6 open textbook
<http://albertaoer.com/content/repository/item?uuid=19071e71-ab12-4184-bc03-…>
(to
share about how two institutions collaborated to create an open textbook
for broad use in post-secondary, community, and professional education
settings)
- (in progress) "*Dental Community Education Package"* (to share about
how the community can come together to equip emerging professionals,
practicing professionals, and community educators with well-crafted,
accessible educational material)
If you have any examples of OER course materials used for non-credit
continuing professional education programs (Language Arts, Business,
Community Engagement, Information Technology, Art/Design, etc), I would
love to hear about them!
Thanks so much

I received the following email from our copyright office today. My initial thought is he can’t use it in the journal article, but I want to confirm this. Thank you.
Hi Heather,
A researcher with Geological Sciences named Jamal came in the other day to ask Kate some questions about a paper he would like to publish. We aren’t certain, but we think he wants to publish in a traditional (i.e., not open) geology journal. He has pictures from five different sources he would like to include. Four are third-party images from already published books are journal article. The last image is a creative commons image<http://ba.e-pics.ethz.ch/latelogin.jspx?records=:579552&r=1523389539059#152…> with a CC BY-SA 4.0<https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/> licence.
Because it is a CC share-alike licence, Kate would like to confirm with you if Jamal can use the image in the article if the entire article cannot be licenced CC BY-SA 4.0. Can the article be published with only the one image maintaining the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, and the rest of the article have the standard “all rights reserved” copyright protection?
Thanks!

Hi Everyone,
I have a project where an instructor would like to digitize and openly
license thousands of blood sample slides as OER. The slides are dated and
have been stored in the basement of the faculty for years and we are
navigating the validation of* copyright and ethics of use*. At this stage,
it seems that digitizing them is not a concern but licensing them as open
is a question mark which we will begin exploring with our Copyright and
Ethics office shortly. If any of you have experience in this type of OER
project, could you please reach out? I'd love to be able to equip the
instructor with examples as we navigate these conversations.
Thank you!

Great news! Pressbooks has been making changes to the interface and functionality based on your feedback. The major release for the BCcampus Open Education Pressbooks instances is scheduled for later this month. Here’s a heads up of the changes that are on the way.
Most of the improvements are under the hood. However, there are a few big changes we would like to call to your attention.
First, a new look and feel is available for the network home page and catalog. The new standalone catalog page is sortable and filterable, for improved discovery.
Pressbooks has also given the webbook a much-needed makeover, with some added functionality. A wider book layout, better scrolling and navigation are just some of the enhancements. We have also updated the Open Textbook theme at BCcampus. A big thanks to Ryerson University for supporting the development of these changes.
The Luther theme will be retiring on the same day as the new release. In their place, Pressbooks is releasing two new themes, McLuhan and Jacobs. These two themes both offer expanded theme options, and both are designed with textbooks in mind. Their development has been generously funded by [ https://www.ecampusontario.ca/ | eCampus Ontario ] . We will be continuing to use the Open Textbooks as our default theme and the theme for the BCcampus open textbook collection.
We are thoroughly testing the updated Pressbooks prior to the release and these improvements should not cause any issues with your existing books. But, if anything does come up, let us know right away at [ mailto:helpdesk@bccampus.ca | helpdesk(a)bccampus.ca ]
Other changes include:
*
Save Button: Pressbooks heard your pleas for a clearer way to save your chapters. It’s here! (In the past, the “save” button was named Update, Publish, or other variations based on the status of your post.) Note that when you create a new chapter, front or back matter section, you will first see a “Create” button, but subsequent changes can be saved by clicking on the new “Save” button.
*
Contributor Management: Pressbooks added a centralized contributor management tool where you can add contributors who can then be reused throughout your book as authors, editors, translators, reviewers, illustrators, and generic contributors.
*
Organize Page Improvements: Pressbooks revamped the Organize page, improving the display on mobile devices, and improving accessibility for keyboard navigation and screen reader users.
*
Chapter Importing: Now, you can import individual chapters from public, openly licensed Pressbooks webbooks using the Import tool. All you need to drop is drop in the URL to a book, begin the import process, then select the chapters you wish to add to your book. (Content that is private, All Rights Reserved or that carries any of the Creative Commons Non-Derivative licenses cannot be imported.)
*
Content Visibility: Pressbooks has made it more intuitive to manage the visibility of your content across web and exports. Now you can simply designate content visibility in web and exports on both the Organize page and the edit screen for individual front matter, chapters and back matter.
*
Import Files from URL: You can now import supported file formats hosted on remote (web based) sources via URL. If you have files hosted elsewhere (with the right permissions), you no longer need to download and upload files, but can import them directly with just the URL.
*
Ebook Start Point: Pressbooks has moved the ebook start point setting to the ebook Theme Options page to ensure that only one front matter, chapter, or back matter can be set as the ebook start point. (Note that Pressbooks tries to enforce the ebook start point you select. However, ereader devices may still override the start point you designate.)
*
Language Support Changes: Pressbooks has renamed the Language Support section in Theme Options to Language & Script Support to better reflect its functionality; we’ve also re-labelled Hindi support to Devanagari, to clarify that the Devanagari script supports Hindi, Sanskrit, and over 120 other languages.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions or problems navigating the new features. You can contact us at [ mailto:helpdesk@bccampus.ca | helpdesk(a)bccampus.ca ]

Good morning all.
There are some rumblings coming out of our College of Engineering that they are interested in using OER / open pedagogy in first year courses. This possibility is coming as they prepare to renew the first year curriculum. Currently first year Engineering students are using a local adaptation of University Physics, which we’ll hopefully release widely this summer, and an Engineering Economics book is in the works. We’ll hopefully release that one in the fall.
I’m wondering if anyone else knows of other OER and open pedagogy being used in colleges of Engineering that they could share with me.

Hi Everyone,
I’m trying to recall an open textbook that a colleague at UofA is looking
for. It was on display at the last BC open textbook summit, he thinks at
the OpenStax display and it's about how to collaborate on the development
of OER. At first I thought he meant the REBUS ebook on collaborating with
students but that’s not the one. The plan is to have some printed open
textbooks available at the Faculty of Sciences’ celebration of teaching as
prizes and share that digital copies are freely available.
Any suggestions of unique science OER or what this collaboration text is?
Thanks so much!

Hello Everyone,
Our eCampusOntario OER Fellow Maureen Glynn suggests the following Webinar (if you have time).
Good research!
Title: The Open Educators Factory Project: In Search for the Open Educator
The Open Educators Factory (OEF) project stems from the assumption that true progress in terms of openness in higher education (as well as in other educational sectors) requires a major cultural change in the mindset of all stakeholders from public policy makers to institutional leaders, to teachers and researchers, to students and parents.
The aim of the Open Educators Factory project is to explore how to transform university teachers from "agents of resistance" into "agents of change" for openness in education. This presentation will discuss results based on data collected from more than 400 HE teachers.

Hello Canada OER List
I have a couple questions I'm hoping I can find answers for on this list.
We're in the process of developing a series OERs related to digital
accessibility, to be distributed in various forms including HTML, epub,
pdf, etc. We're experimenting with Pressbooks as the platform for
assembling the content, content that was previously part of a MOOC based
course. The content is quite varied, with typical text and images, lot's
of video, and a variety of interactive activities, most of which link
out to resource websites specifically created for the courses.
1. What is the best practice for including external video, with epub
books in particular? From what I read, it seems the video needs to be
included in the files for an epub book. This is not an option for us,
given there are 30 or 40 videos in the course, which if added directly
to the epub, would make the book's size too large to be usable for many
(Gigabytes in size). Linking from Youtube etc. does not seem to work
for epubs and PDFs. We've ended up using the YouTube embed code, to
embed the videos for those viewing the book online, but for epubs and
PDFs the videos are blank spaces. We've included links to the videos as
a backup, so readers can go to YouTube and view the videos there.
Question: Is there a better way to include external videos in epubs (and
PDFs)?
2. Pressbooks allows iframes, into which we can open external activities
from within the web version of the book, but again when exported as an
epub or PDF, they show up as a blank space. Similar question:
Question: Is there a best practice for linking external content into
epubs and PDFs?
Thanks
greg
P. S. is there an archive of this list one can go back and review?

Does anyone know anything about this publisher? I’ve already told Catherine that the open textbook initiatives I’ve dealt with don’t charge authors to publish books openly.

Hi Heather,
I hope this email finds you well. I periodically check to see if there are any good options for open access books for physical therapy (one of my library liaison areas). I ran across Intech (https://www.intechopen.com<https://www.intechopen.com/>/) and am wondering if you know anything about it. I have done some checking, but would value your thoughts/experience if this is a publisher you are familiar with.
Thank you and have a good day!
