Hi Everyone,
I just sent a message on to a contact I have in the Provost Office at
Athabasca University to see if Dr. Matthew L. Prineas (Provost and
Vice-president, Academic) might be available/interested in sharing his
experience from University of Maryland with the Canada OER group. At a
minimum, I'll pursue that he connect with you, Naza. :)

Hello everyone,
At BCcampus, we recently launched two COEPs (Communities of Open Education Practitioners), for Physics and Psychology. The idea behind creating these groups is to facilitate collaboration and sharing among like-minded disciplinary colleagues across different institutions, both within and beyond BC. This might, for example, involve proposing and peer reviewing revisions to within specific open textbooks, sharing ancillary teaching resources, or even helping identify the need for/collaboratively developing additional open educational resources.
These groups are designed to be informal and, importantly, the level of involvement is entirely up to the individual. So, for example, an instructor may choose to draw on shared resources for their own teaching and assist colleagues by reviewing a newly-discovered open textbook. Or they may choose to propose the development of a question bank to support an open textbook, recruit collaborators, and apply to BCcampus for funding to support their project.
In each case, we have created a Google Group to facilitate communication (this functions like a private listserv) and a private Hypothes.is group to facilitate sharing of annotations within specific open textbooks (click here if you are unfamiliar with social annotations).
Anyone interested in joining a COEP should send an email to opentext(a)bccampus.ca. They will then be added to the Google Group and receive the link to join the private Hypothes.is group. Please feel free to share this email with interested colleagues.
Thank you very much for your support of open education.

There is some interest in our Department of History to integrate open pedagogy. Many of their courses don’t use any textbooks so this is a good opening. A faculty member suggested that I find instructors of History at other universities using open pedagogy who might be willing to speak with the department. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello everyone,
Amanda, thank you for the heartfelt endorsement! I completely agree. The conference really benefited from the cross-provincial voices that we had in attendance. And, I know that our colleagues in Ontario were grateful for the opportunity to tap into the other OER movements in Canada as well. I will make sure that invite information for next year is available far in advance so you can plan to attend.
Thank you all for your response to the Doodle poll. The results are in! Here is our confirmed date and time for the next meeting:
December 12, 2:00pm – 3:00pm Eastern time.
I’ll send a calendar invite in a moment to follow-up.
Thank you!

Hi Canada OER Friends,
Monday/Tuesday this week I had the opportunity to attend the TESS17 conference in Toronto. I wanted to share with you how wonderful this event was. I GREATLY appreciated the Canadian focus in OER- from advocacy, to awareness, to development, and copyright issues. Many times I attend conferences in the US related to OER and this felt like a fabulous fit. I hope you will have the opportunity to attend next year!

Hi Canada OER,
Happy fall!
As discussed at our last get together we’re going to aim for early December for this next meeting.
In the spirit of new year’s resolutions, I wonder if it might be worthwhile to set aside some time for a discussion about the value of the Canada OER group. What do we want the future to look like in terms of inter-provincial collaboration and connections? What role can this group play in making some of those opportunities a reality? Some food for thought as we head into 2018.

Subject: [Openkpu] Textbooks too pricey? How does free sound?
This is very exciting new for Open Studies at KPU! Congrats to all of you who were so involved in getting this off the ground!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 1, 2017
KPU unveils sweet suite of courses with no-cost textbooks
Metro Vancouver, B.C. – Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) are about to save thousands of dollars on their education, thanks to dozens of courses that don’t require expensive, commercial textbooks.
Launched Nov. 1, the courses are part of KPU’s Zed Cred program, which is the first of its kind in Canada. The "Z" in Zed Cred refers to zero textbook costs and the “Cred” refers to an entire degree program, in this case KPU’s certificate of arts credential.
“Even a single textbook can cost well over $100, which means a student can spend thousands of dollars on textbooks on top of the cost of tuition during their post-secondary career,” said Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani, a university teaching fellow in open studies and psychology instructor.
KPU has launched close to 50 courses in the Faculty of Arts that use either free open textbooks or free library materials that are available online.
Third-year KPU psychology student Bethany Borkowski is already planning to take three Zed Cred courses in counselling psychology, sociology, and journalism. Borkowski estimates she’s spent about $700 on textbooks to date, despite buying mostly old and used editions.
“The high cost of textbooks limits university learning to those who have accessibility and the financial resources available to cover additional costs,” says Borkowski. “ I know many people who do not buy textbooks because of the cost, and they miss out on valuable information for a course.”
In fact, Jhangiani recently published his research showing that 54 per cent of BC post-secondary students do not purchase at least one of their required course textbooks because of cost.
The introduction of Zed Cred means Borkowski will no longer have to guess what page an instructor is referring to due to differences in their respective textbook editions, she’ll have access to her materials anywhere, and she won’t have to carry any heavy tomes around with her.
Borkowski says open educational resources also make courses much more engaging.
“Instead of just reading from a textbook, we had access to more resources online through hyperlinks in the text and suggested readings from the instructor.”
KPU’s Zed Cred was made possible thanks to a $35,000 grant from BCcampus to adopt and adapt pre-existing free online open education resources as well as create new ones.
KPU also received an Open Education Resource Grant, which matches BCcampus funding with KPU funding for creating new open textbooks, redesigning existing resources, and providing workshops, training and other support services.
KPU is already the leading institutional adopter of open textbooks in B.C.
“KPU is a proudly open access university,” notes Dr. Diane Purvey, dean of the Faculty of Arts. “Zed Cred is in complete alignment with our mission to create pathways to enable all learners to become successful.”

<br/>> This is very exciting new for Open Studies at KPU! Congrats to all of you
<br/>> who were so involved in getting this off the ground!
<br/>>
<br/>>
<br/>>
<br/>> *FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*
<br/>> November 1, 2017
<br/>>
<br/>> *KPU unveils sweet suite of courses with no-cost textbooks*
<br/>>
<br/>> *Metro Vancouver, B.C.* – Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University
<br/>> (KPU) are about to save thousands of dollars on their education, thanks to
<br/>> dozens of courses that don’t require expensive, commercial textbooks.
<br/>>
<br/>> Launched Nov. 1, the courses are part of KPU’s Zed Cred program, which is
<br/>> the first of its kind in Canada. The "Z" in Zed Cred refers to zero
<br/>> textbook costs and the “Cred” refers to an entire degree program, in this
<br/>> case KPU’s certificate of arts credential.
<br/>>
<br/>> “Even a single textbook can cost well over $100, which means a student can
<br/>> spend thousands of dollars on textbooks on top of the cost of tuition
<br/>> during their post-secondary career,” said Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani, a university
<br/>> teaching fellow in open studies and psychology instructor.
<br/>>
<br/>> KPU has launched close to 50 courses in the Faculty of Arts that use
<br/>> either free open textbooks or free library materials that are available
<br/>> online.
<br/>>
<br/>> Third-year KPU psychology student Bethany Borkowski is already planning to
<br/>> take three Zed Cred courses in counselling psychology, sociology, and
<br/>> journalism. Borkowski estimates she’s spent about $700 on textbooks to
<br/>> date, despite buying mostly old and used editions.
<br/>>
<br/>> “The high cost of textbooks limits university learning to those who have
<br/>> accessibility and the financial resources available to cover additional
<br/>> costs,” says Borkowski. “I know many people who do not buy textbooks
<br/>> because of the cost, and they miss out on valuable information for a
<br/>> course.”
<br/>>
<br/>> In fact, Jhangiani recently published his research showing that 54 per
<br/>> cent of BC post-secondary students do not purchase at least one of their
<br/>> required course textbooks because of cost.
<br/>>
<br/>> The introduction of Zed Cred means Borkowski will no longer have to guess
<br/>> what page an instructor is referring to due to differences in their
<br/>> respective textbook editions, she’ll have access to her materials anywhere,
<br/>> and she won’t have to carry any heavy tomes around with her.
<br/>>
<br/>> Borkowski says open educational resources also make courses much more
<br/>> engaging.
<br/>>
<br/>> “Instead of just reading from a textbook, we had access to more resources
<br/>> online through hyperlinks in the text and suggested readings from the
<br/>> instructor.”
<br/>>
<br/>> KPU’s Zed Cred was made possible thanks to a $35,000 grant from BCcampus
<br/>> to adopt and adapt pre-existing free online open education resources as
<br/>> well as create new ones.
<br/>>
<br/>> KPU also received an Open Education Resource Grant, which matches BCcampus
<br/>> funding with KPU funding for creating new open textbooks, redesigning
<br/>> existing resources, and providing workshops, training and other support
<br/>> services.
<br/>>
<br/>> KPU is already the leading institutional adopter of open textbooks in B.C.
<br/>>
<br/>> “KPU is a proudly open access university,” notes Dr. Diane Purvey, dean of
<br/>> the Faculty of Arts. “Zed Cred is in complete alignment with our mission to
<br/>> create pathways to enable all learners to become successful.”

I have an instructor looking for open educational resources to help develop an introductory course in Early Childhood Education. I think I've looked in most of the repositories I know of but can't seem to find anything.
Any tips?

Perfect. That sounds like a plan. Thanks Mary. So, see you there at noon?
Yeah, Lunch is not on the list of events today. Actually there doesn't
seem to be a break at all. Looks like the orientation for the
UnConference is at noon, and then the UnConference begins at 12:30? Are
you guys still good with meeting at noon?
Cheers,
Rosario

I am very happy to announce that the call for proposals to the 2018 Teaching and Learning Today conference is now open and can be found on the conference website.
http://teaching.usask.ca/tlt2018/index.php
Teaching and Learning Today 2018, to be held at the University of Saskatchewan May 1 & 2 2018, is tackling two of the most important paradigm shifts in higher education across Canada, indigenizing and opening academia and exploring where they may intersect.

Hello Everyone,
It's been a busy fall for BCcampus Open Education. Please see below for a list of new open textbooks, ancillary resources, and other updates. An option to purchase print-on-demand copies through SFU's Document Solutions for Canadian faculty and students is available for all textbooks. Textbooks and supplementary resources that were created in B.C. are labelled as "Made in British Columbia". Other Canadian based materials are also marked.
New Books
CRIMINOLOGY
Made in British Columbia
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=0c9b47a1-9309-470c-b83c-… | Introduction to Criminal Investigation: Processes, Practices and Thinking ] is a teaching text describing and segmenting criminal investigations into its component parts to illustrate the craft of criminal investigation. Published by the Justice Institute of BC and written by Rod Gehl (JIBC) and Darryl Plecas (University of the Fraser Valley), t he goal of this textbook is to assist the reader in forming their own structured mental map of investigative thinking practices.
GEOGRAPHY
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=3b660b21-097e-4ecf-8a8e-… | World Regional Geography ] presents an overview of the discipline by introducing students to key themes and concepts in geography through a study of the world’s regions. This recent addition, by Caitlin Finlayson from the University of Mary Washington, was evaluated by subject matter experts in B.C.
MATH - Calculus
Made in British Columbia
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=c8c2b69f-5ff7-4b6d-a35a-… | Differential Calculus for the Life Sciences ] , by UBC Math professor Leah Edelstein-Keshet, is a high quality textbook designed with life sciences majors in mind. O ften calculus is taught as a technical subject with rules and formulas devoid of its connection to applications. In this textbook, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates.
A two-volume set for an introductory calculus course has also been added, written by faculty authors at the Grand Valley State University in Michigan
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=a78cdfc6-b5b6-45cb-9045-… | Active Calculus, 2017 edition ] can be used as a stand-alone textbook for a standard first semester college calculus course or as a supplement to a more traditional text. WeBWork files for a workbook and computer lab activities are available to instructors.
* In [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=3dcfe755-6534-4877-9c97-… | Active Calculus Multivariable ] the authors endeavor to actively engage students in learning the subject through an activity-driven approach in which the vast majority of the examples are completed by students.
PSYCHOLOGY
>From NOBA, we've added [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=0100da6c-9753-42cf-a1f3-… | Together: The Science of Social Psychology ] in which several modules investigate the ways other people affect our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
SPANISH
Two new textbooks on Spanish literature (and written in Spanish) are now available.
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=17e2b614-b203-4491-8f39-… | Antologia Abierta de Literatura Hispana ] is a critical anthology of literary texts from the Spanish-speaking world. The focus is on canonical authors with an attempt to include voices that have been marginalized. Julie Ward, assistant professor of 20th and 21st-century Latin American literature at the University of Oklahoma, is the editor.
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=0613e2b4-5a51-4aec-8927-… | Leyendas y arquetipos del Romanticismo español, Segunda edición ] i s an introduction to nineteenth-century Spanish literature with a thematic focus on legends and archetypes. This textbook is by Robert Sanders, from Portland State University, who specializes in nineteenth and twentieth-century peninsular Spanish literature.
WEB LITERACY
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=ccbb4e77-b20f-4dec-8a9f-… | Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers ] by Michael Caulfield, from Washington State University in Vancouver, WA, "will show you how to use date filters to find the source of viral content, how to assess the reputation of a scientific journal in less than five seconds, and how to see if a tweet is really from the famous person you think it is or from an impostor", amongst other skills.
Textbook Updates
Made in British Columbia
PDF files and print-on-demand copies are now available for the two textbook set: [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=4356bb1a-a2d9-4a3c-989e-… | Greek and Latin Roots: Part I - Latin ] and [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=659957b9-b344-4f30-9f74-… | Greek and Latin Roots: Part II - Greek ] . This series examines the systematic principles by which a large portion of English vocabulary has evolved from Latin and (to a lesser degree) from Greek. These open textbooks, by the late Peter Smith, were produced by the University of Victoria and funded, in part, from a BCcampus OER Grant.
Canadian (Alberta)
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=c6d0e9bd-ba6b-4548-82d6-… | Creative Clinical Teaching in the Health Professions ] has been updated with files for its 2016 edition. This peer reviewed e-book, from Athabasca University authors Sherri Melrose, Caroline Park, and Beth Perry, is a must-read for nurses and other health professionals who strive to teach with creativity and excellence in clinical settings. Each chapter presents current evidence informed educational practice knowledge.
New Ancillary Resources
HEALTH CARE
Made in British Columbia
[ https://pressbooks.bccampus.ca/healthcasestudies/ | Health Case Studies ] , th e work of Glynda Rees, Rob Kruger, and Janet Morrison from BCIT, is a set of eight original health case studies. Each case includes a patient story that models the best practice in healthcare settings along with a set of specific learning objectives to support learning and facilitate educational strategies and evaluation. These case studies align with the textbooks [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=fbbb4840-eda5-4265-9f1c-… | Clinical Procedures for Safer Patient Care ] and [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=f4873e49-e09c-469e-9ee8-… | Anatomy and Physiology: OpenStax ] . This project was funded, in part, with funds from a BCcampus OER Grant.
ACCOUNTING
Canadian (Alberta)
For [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=0370418e-be7d-4541-b0d1-… | Introduction to Financial Accounting ] , we have added (from author, David Annand, Athabasca University) a comprehensive end-of-course assignment. Randomly-generated versions of this assignment are also available.

Greetings Canada OER members,
eCampusOntario would like to host a Basecamp instance and interact in other spaces – as participants choose to build community around the six-week "Intro to Open Education" MOOC on edX by David Wiley and George Siemens. It begins October 1.
Introduction to Open Education https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-open-education-utarlingtonx-link-oex , it's free to sign up and take (of course).

www.edx.org
Learn about open education and how it can significantly reduce costs, increase agency and transparency, and improve learning outcomes.
We're going to use the hashtag #OpenEdMOOCCanada to build on the official hashtag.
Let's see how much of a cross-Canada following we can build together. I'm happy to add any interested participants into the Basecamp team, and can deputize anyone to add others. We could host weekly Twitter chats if desired, promote blog posts related to the learning, etc. Let's invite as many educators and learners as we can!
Other ideas and supports that you desire?
Go ahead and blow up my inbox with interested participants and I'll just keep adding people in to Basecamp. Don't forget to sign up! We can probably recruit other Canadians inside the edX shell.

Building Champions and Allies - For Open and Indigenizing Pedagogies
Teaching and Learning Today 2018, to be held at the University of Saskatchewan May 1 & 2 2018, is tackling two of the most important paradigm shifts in higher education across Canada, indigenizing and opening academia and exploring where they may intersect. We are calling on all champions and allies of these two movements to join us in sharing, discovering, and learning about the challenges, rewards, and shifts in education that are impacting and transforming our institutions. Kory Wilson, the Executive Director, Aboriginal Initiatives and Partnerships for the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) will be the opening keynote for this conference. If you are interested in building, driving, or supporting indigenization or open pedagogy, please save the date. Space will be limited.

I just received a phone call from an instructor (and the department head for Plant Science) who is looking for OER on forest ecology. A colleague of his teaching statistics in that department told him about OER and he wants in on this. Does anyone have anything on forest ecology?
And why can’t I get these calls from the head of Psychology?

Some professors in our College of Education are looking for an open textbook or other OER for a first year course. It’s an introductory course (basic educational theory, terms, what’s assessment, etc.). The learning outcomes not specific to Saskatchewan are:
- Develop awareness of important education constructs, issues, and practices in teaching and learning in secondary schools (high schools)
- Begin to understand who secondary learners are and how to address their unique needs
- Start to consider alternative possibilities for innovating teaching and learning in secondary education
They are considering taking an open pedagogy approach and having students find appropriate information for creating a course wiki that could serve as a text, but the professors would still like to know what’s out there for OER to either go along side or use if the open pedagogy approach doesn’t seem to be working (it’s a new course).
Thank you.

A nursing instructor here just told me that they’ve heard rumours that the textbook they’ve been using for several courses may no longer have a Canadian edition (https://www.amazon.ca/Canadian-Fundamentals-Nursing-Patricia-Potter/dp/1926…) which will mean them having to begrudgingly switch to a Pearson text. She said it would be great if there was an open textbook instead. Does anyone know of something existing or in the works?
Thank you.
