Hi Erin Fields:
I received the email message below through the Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries / Conseil des bibliothèques postsecondaires de l’Atlantique (CAAL-CBPA)
Would this invitation be for indigenous College of the North Atlantic (CNA) employees and students? I am not sure whether students would be considered individuals “who engage in/or support teaching and learning”.
Thanks for getting back to me.

Subject: [Canadaoer] REMINDER - Call for Interview Participants: Canadian Indigenous Open Educational Resources
Hello,
Open educational resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials licensed to be freely owned, shared, and in most cases, modified. While the development of OER is rooted in the belief that education should be equitably distributed, the potential to develop, create, and share resources within Western understandings of knowledge and ownership of information, can run counter to Indigenous perspectives, traditions, and information practices.
Our research study seeks to centre the Indigenous perspective on open education principles and processes, with a focus on OER development in Canadian academic institutions. We are hoping you can support our study by participating and/or sharing the following information and participant invitations.
Below is a call for participation that can be shared via email.
Thank you for your support in spreading the word about this call for research participants. If you have any questions, please contact Erin Fields (Principal Investigator) at erin.fields(a)ubc.ca<mailto:erin.fields@ubc.ca>.
Sincerely,
Erin Fields on behalf of the Research Team

Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone has seen the OpenStax title Contemporary Mathematics converted into a Pressbooks XML file? I have a faculty member who is interested in editing the content, but I can't find a suitable file.
Thanks for any leads!

Indigenous Knowledges and Open Education Webinar Series
The principles of OER can be in tension with Indigenous Knowledges that are deeply rooted in community defined ethics and protocols and relationships. The Indigenous Knowledges and Open Education Webinar Series is focused on building knowledge, supporting a space for discussion, and engaging both theoretically and practically on how open education (OE) and Indigenous Knowledges can intersect respectfully.
The series of three open webinars will cover: 1) issues, concerns, policies, and approaches to Indigenous Knowledges and OE; 2) case studies of current Indigenous OER development across Canada; and 3) Indigenous student perspectives on the value of Indigenous OER.

Hi everyone,
I’m excited to share the following new resource: Developing Organizational and Managerial Wisdom – 2nd Edition (Audio plus text version)<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/developingwisdomaudiobook/> by Brad Anderson, an audiobook version of an existing OER. This Pressbook embeds audio recordings in each chapter, provides a playlist of all recordings for uninterrupted listening, and provides links to download the audio files.
Here’s what Brad had to say about this project:
Over the past year, I have realized that most of our students have accessibility issues. Many people’s first reaction to that is doubt, but that, I believe, is because many people still view accessibility through a physical disability lens.
The student working thirty hours a week who must cross two bridges in rush-hour traffic to get to campus has an accessibility issue. So does the student renting a bed in a house with half a dozen roommates and no dedicated workspace, a student caring for a sick family member, one with mental health challenges, or … you get the picture.
How many barriers might we remove if we made an audio version of textbooks available they could listen to while stuck in traffic? Universal design for learning (UDL) is about giving students options in accessing course material, empowering them to fit learning into the unique considerations of their lives.
A couple of years ago, I created this OER textbook under a Creative Commons licence to reduce barriers to learning. Creating an audio version of that text is a continuation of that effort to reduce barriers.
While there were many challenges associated with developing this audiobook, with some creative thinking and advice from one of KPU’s Educational Media Strategists, we were able to overcome them. Going forward, I am excited to encourage other OER authors to consider creating an audiobook versions, as well as streamlining and improving the process.
Cheers,
Amanda

An Open Guide to Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC)
Authored by Andrea Niosi and KPU Marketing 4201 Class of Summer 2020
The Open Guide to Integrated Marketing Communications is an OER that was written and edited by KPU students in 2020. It covers a range of topics related to designing and launching integrated marketing campaigns, such as research, audience segmentation, creative briefs, content calendars, and more. The authors have also included reusable materials and templates to support the marketing and communications efforts of those organizations with the smallest of budgets and most limited resources, namely not-for-profit organizations, NGO’s, charities, advocacy groups, and climate & social activists. The Open Guide to IMC is centred around the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and created as an inclusive, equitable, and accessible resource to support quality education.

An instructor is looking for an open textbook or other OER for a course she's been assigned. Does anyone know of anything like she's asking for below:
"I have been assigned to teach an undergraduate nursing research course (critiquing and using research in practice, not creating and developing a research project) and I was wondering if you have come across any textbooks or online materials that I might be able to use in this course? It could be health-related research, not specific to nursing. Since research is research."

Hi All,
This message is cross posted.
A faculty member is looking to develop an OER on Systems Philosophy or Systems Thinking in Philosophy. I've checked the typical repositories, and provided general Philosophy works from OER Commons, Rebus, OAPEN, etc. I'm checking with the instructor now to see if systems thinking content from other disciplines (science, business, computing) would be useful. I'm wondering if anyone on the list knows of a text focused on systems philosophy specifically? Any leads are appreciated!
Cheers,

Hi everyone!
(apologies for cross posting!)
We’re excited to share with you the following new OER that has just been published at KPU:
Political Ideologies and Worldviews: An Introduction – 2nd Edition
Edited by Valérie Vézina and Alexandra Taylor
This open educational resource (OER) brings together Canadian and international scholars in a contemporary, pluralistic volume introducing undergraduates in a variety of relevant disciplines to political ideologies and worldviews. This introductory textbook is also suitable for a wider general audience. This fully open textbook on political worldviews deals with the historical development of classical ideologies, while expanding and updating the subject using contemporary political examples and non-Eurocentric examinations of ideology. The textbook includes chapters on Indigenous worldviews, Confucianism, and the future of ideology in the emerging global order. On top of containing discussion questions, this new and revised second edition offers an increased number of exercises and interactive content.

We’re excited to share with you the following new OER that has just been published at KPU:
Lorrain's Logbook: Notes from a Missionary in Mizoram, Northeast India (1891-1936)
Edited by Kyle Jackson; Natasha McConnell; and Nick Gill
Lorrain’s Logbook: Notes from a Missionary in Mizoram, Northeast India (1891-1936) expands the archive for students of Northeast India. Authored by James Herbert Lorrain (Pu Buanga)—one of the most significant missionaries and linguists to operate in the colonial Indo-Burma borderlands—the Logbook is a record of personal observations across decades, from Lorrain’s arrival in Bengal in 1890 to his departure in 1932 from the Lushai Hills District (today: Mizoram). This entirely new digital transcription and text-searchable online educational resource (OER) unlocks a vital archival source for researchers of imperial frontiers, Asian borderlands, missionization, Mizo history, and beyond. It features an introduction co-authored by Dr. Kyle Jackson (Kwantlen Polytechnic University) and Prof. Joy L. K. Pachuau (Jawaharlal Nehru University).

Research articles on open often cite U.S. data on textbook costs, the percentage of students who go without, etc. Has there been a relatively recent study in Canada looking at figures for Canadian students?

Hello.
We had a book created here at USask several years ago, and the author unfortunately chose to A) put an ND license on it and B) let the media production team build it in iBooks. The author has since retired and the instructor who teaches the class now says that students often have trouble finding the book and would like to put it into Pressbooks. Is this allowed under and ND license?
Thank you.

Hello!
I want to share this new article that was recently published by KPU faculty member Deirdre Maultsaid and TRU faculty member Michelle Harrison. This publication is the result of Deirdre’s year working with us as an Open Education Research Fellow and explores student perspectives on Open Pedagogy.
Can Open Pedagogy Encourage Care? Student Perspectives<https://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/6901>
Abstract: As a response to the increasing commercialization of postsecondary education, educators argue for a practice of care in education. Open pedagogy (OP) seems like an ideal practice where care, trust, and inclusion can be realized. OP is characterized as a democratic and collaborative pedagogical practice, in which students and teachers work to co-create learning and knowledge using openly licensed materials, open platforms, and other open processes. The purposes of this study were, first, to reveal ways students in postsecondary institutions perceive care and, second, to determine how students suggest OP can be used to create an open/caring learning process. A task-oriented focus group method engaged students from four teaching-focused institutions. The students created open cases on social issues for class discussion and reflected on care and OP processes in postsecondary settings. Using four elements of the ethics of care—attentiveness, responsibility, competence, and trustworthiness—as conceptual categories, the study examined students’ experience of care and care in OP using affective coding and thematic analysis. The results showed that through OP, with teacher support and explicitly designed practices of care, students can assert their agency, have quintessential roles in creating and participating in highly relevant curriculum and importantly, care about others, and be cared for. OP is a process able to involve a diverse population of students and embody care as an all-encompassing practice.

Summary of Results
Fanshawe College: “In the colleges we compensate full-time faculty through a course release and part time faculty through a curriculum development contract to the equivalent of the FT folks. This works out to about 6 hrs a week for a 14-week semester and 12 hrs during the condensed 7-week summer term. We provide all the support, and the faculty member is responsible for the content. We take an agile approach where the faculty is delivering one chapter per week, and we are building in pressbooks right behind them.” https://fanshawec.libguides.com/c.php?g=724582&p=5205170
Clackamas Community College: The college has developed a chart<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1O5pnfB0Y-SVJQnjle-qIvV6D-6cbW6gfP1zWzeI…> that summarizes the number of hours per week for different types of OER projects. Hours range from 1-3 hours/week for 1 term to adopt an OER, up to 6-9 hours/week for 3 terms to author a completely new OER.

Stitched sewing techniques, how-to, and more
By: Heather Clark and Catherine Hay
[cid:image001.jpg@01D9E7B7.0B888CB0]
Within the fashion, sewing, and textile classrooms it is a challenge to find a textbook on the topic of sewing that covers the range of skills and techniques taught within these learning spaces. Typically to supplement student learning, handouts will be utilized along with in-class, and in-person demos. The open-source and online format of this OER will enable educators to continually update the resource to meet current student needs, learning outcomes, and reflect best practices within the apparel and fashion industry. Content in this OER supports skills and knowledge learned within the classroom while providing supportive resources for learners. This open-source learning resource contains details and step-by-step instructions, supported with images, videos, and text.
This resource will be continually worked on, with videos, text, and information being added. The vision for this resource is to provide learning resources to the sewing community – an array of learners, with multiple ways of ‘how-to’.

Hi All,
This message is cross-posted. I've had a request to provide estimates for the number of faculty hours that are required for both creation of a new OER textbook and ongoing maintenance of an existing work. This information will be used to develop budget numbers for offloads. I know the hours can vary greatly based on topic, technology, and format! But, I believe I have seen grant programs that include an assumption of the number of hours funded. Any information about how you estimate the amount of time allocated for large projects would be appreciated, especially in the area of business.
Thanks in advance!

¡Voy en camino! Spanish Language and Intercultural Learning
Written by: Constanza Rojas-Primus and Ana Robles
Primary Subject: Language learning: grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation
[cid:image001.png@01D9DB48.6B316DB0]
¡Voy en camino! means “I’m on my way” in Spanish. Since learning an additional language and the culture is a journey in itself, ¡Voy en camino! captures the voyage to get there. ¡Voy en camino! has been created to serve the first two introductory Spanish language courses at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and to solidify our commitment to Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC). All units of study are designed to be interactive with embedded audio, videos and links for learners to practice the material along the way. Learners can self-pace and self-test their knowledge both individually and with the assistance of an instructor. ¡Voy en camino! has plenty of opportunities to practice writing and speaking with downloadable capabilities becoming a Spanish teaching and learning tool that promotes and supports sustainable renewable learning. With its digital format and open publication ¡Voy en camino! is also meant to join the Spanish teaching open education community and provide access to learning to interested users along the way.

Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of Kelsey Cameron, Chelsea Chiovelli, Danielle Deschamps, Marty
Grande-Sherbert, Sadaf Hakimizadeh, Andrew Ip, Olesya Komarnytska, Amy
Nowakowsky, Winston Pei, Nicole Pope, Reis Pouliot, Melissa Ramsey, Julia
Sieben, Maia Trotter, Grace Turnbull, Kat Voy, Dandi Wang, and Faye
Willauer, I am pleased to announce the publication of the openly licensed,
textbook *Contemporary Issues in Collection Management (CIiCM)
<https://openeducationalberta.ca/ciicm/>*. This Pressbooks OER is made
available thanks to Open Education Alberta and University of Alberta
Libraries.
*CIiCM* examines several different issues in collection management. Topics
covered include physical vs. digital collections; the impact of BookTok on
collections; challenges to 2SLGBTQ+ collections ; ebook licensing; ebook
pricing; accessible collections for users with physical disabilities;
accessible collections for users with invisible disabilities; "just in
time"/demand-driven acquisitions; climate change and collections and
research data collections.
*CIiCM* also demonstrates the power and potential of open education and
open pedagogy. Arising from a need to move beyond disposable assignments
(Wiley, 2013) and also in recognition of the Association of College and
Research Libraries’ *Framework for Information Literacy* *for Higher
Education* (ACRL, 2016), the book demonstrates the role students can play
as contributors to scholarly discussions and resources. *Contemporary
Issues in Collection Management* had its genesis in the in person class LIS
531 Collection Management from the Faculty of Education at the University
of Alberta in the Fall 2022 semester. While the Collections Management
class served as the spring board for the book, all of the authors here have
had to contribute their own voluntary labour outside of the classroom to
further developing their work for *CIiCM*.

Subject: Call for fellows (update, Canadian applications encouraged!)
To: oer-research-fellows(a)googlegroups.com <
oer-research-fellows(a)googlegroups.com>
We are seeking applicants for the next cohort! I would really appreciate it
if you would share the call for applications below in your professional
networks.
The Open Education Group thanks to generous support from the Hewlett
foundation is seeking to support early career researchers to conduct
studies in open education (what is open education, click here
<https://sparcopen.org/open-education/>) through the open education
research fellowship. The purpose is to support education professionals to
develop their open education scholarship ideas into published works.
Specifically, this fellowship seeks to provide mentorship, community, and
some financial support to carry out their ideas in open education research.
Financial support includes attendance at the Open Education Conference in
2023 (November 7-9, virtual) and 2024 (in person in the United States,
TBD). The fellowship will also pay for article processing charges to allow
for publications developed in this fellowship to be publicly available
(around $3,000). In addition, fellows will receive a stipend of $1200 per
article submitted prior to January 15, 2025, based on their fellowship work.
Applications will be assessed based on its potential contribution to open
education, feasibility, and novelty. In the application, prospective
fellows will be asked to explain how your proposed research project would
be relevant to diversity, inclusion, equity, and access to education.
Applicants should have some prior research training and will be asked to
list their previous research coursework.
For the purpose of this fellowship, the following groups are considered
early career researchers: doctoral graduate student (PhD, EdD, PsyD, DSW,
DNP, DBA), postdoctoral researchers, pre-tenure faculty,
teaching-track/clinical faculty (including librarians), and faculty at
teaching-intensive institutions (liberal arts, community colleges, regional
institutions, etc.), K-12 administrators and teachers, and public education
employees. Full or part time status applicants are eligible. Tenured
faculty at research institutions (R1 or R2) would generally not be
considered early career researchers. Please feel free to contact Virginia
Clinton-Lisell with questions about eligibility at virginia.clinton(a)und.edu.
Note, due to legal reasons, we can only offer this fellowship to early
career researchers working in the United States/Canada. If you have a work
visa for the United States or Canada, please check with your visa
guidelines regarding payment eligibility from the fellowship prior to
applying. While this fellowship is limited to US and Canadian residents, we
strongly encourage research projects with global perspectives, particularly
in the Global South.

Hi all, this message is cross-posted
Rebus Community is thrilled to share our latest resource, Making Ripples: A
Guidebook to Challenge the Status Quo in OER Creation
<https://press.rebus.community/MakingRipples/>. Making Ripples is an open
peer-reviewed and edited OER, created from programming insights from Rebus’
work with partners in Louisiana and Massachusetts. The Guide is designed to
support educators in reframing their practices with care in an encouraging,
conversational tone and includes examples for a wide range of OER resources
and authors.
The Guide is structured in five interconnected parts that build off one
another, and contains opportunities for educators to reflect on their
practice, identify strategies for action, and connect with resources and
community members. In doing so, readers will create ripple effects of
positive change in education and beyond.
Our thanks go to all participants, facilitators, and partners in the
Textbook Success Program cohorts in Louisiana (in the Interactive OER for
Dual Enrollment project) and Massachusetts (via the Remixing Open Textbooks
through an Equity Lens grant), as well as The Hewlett Foundation for
funding this work. Our gratitude also to all of you readers and community
for the supportive culture of sharing and learning! We hope this resource
will be useful to you in different ways.

Hello,
I have a question related to how people deal with open educational resources in their institutional repositories. We are trying to work through some details at UBC about how to efficiently describe OER in our institutional repository that prioritizes research materials. We were wondering if folks have suggestions for the following:
Are there any best practices/processes you use for the metadata?
Do you have particular Dublin Core fields and descriptors, keywords you use, or descriptive information that makes it easier to find within your repository?
Thanks for any help you can give!
Erin
Hello!
We’re excited to share with you the following new OER that has just been published at KPU:
Gender in Canada: A Companion Workbook
Edited by: Rebecca Yoshizawa
Primary Subjects: Gender studies, gender groups
[cid:image001.png@01D95C98.D7F0FEE0]
This workbook is designed for first or second-year sociology of gender or gender studies courses, focusing on the Canadian context. It is divided into five topics - Theory and Concepts, Institutions, Work, Family and Intimate Relationships, and Bodies and Health. This workbook does not replace a textbook, instructor teachings through lectures, class discussion, class assignments, or other standard undergraduate course materials. Instead, this is an activity book: a course companion, working alongside and with those course materials. It is designed to build competency, capacity, and confidence with course materials, concepts, and arguments. It does this by embracing the concepts of embodied learning, iterative scaffolding, and reflexive insight. "Embodied" means doing things with your body and not just your mind; "scaffolding" means breaking things down into constituent parts that can be gathered together to build something bigger; and "reflexive" means thinking about oneself in relation to broad concepts and contexts around us. The workbook presents four types of content. (1) Each chapter has one or two pages of written content deemed "Insights to Think About," which are summative guides to help students grab onto big ideas. (2) The chapters also have "Words to Try," encouraging a usable lexicon. (3) Chapters have thoughtfully designed "Activities." The activities help students to get ideas down, give those ideas meaning and order, and prepare students to do more engaged work in course conversations and higher-stakes assignments. (4) Finally, each section ends with "My Insights On," where students can record their "big picture" ideas and things they want to explore more in their course discussions and other assignments.

3. develop a business viable product concept with input from both business and technology.
4. enhance team working skills and find a team or community to start the venture.
5. apply and reinforce fundamental knowledge and skills from other courses through practice and reflection in an action-oriented setting.
6. present their work professionally and effectively to a variety of audiences (co-founders, employees, investors, board members, and customers).
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. be aware of historical technological innovation and current topics in strategic innovation management, such as innovation networks, idea brokering, open innovation.
2. be familiar with how technology innovation occurs, such as the source of innovation, idea generation processes, and R&D team and incentive design.
3. understand how technology innovation can be managed, for example through R&D portfolio management, organizational structures, and meeting the challenges of innovation in large and small firms. 4. understand the strategies most effective for exploiting innovations.
5. evaluate the potential impact of a new technology on social, cultural, and environmental aspects of the society based on the United Nation’s Sustainability Development Goals (UN SDGs).
6. apply these concepts to real-world situations for managing technology innovation.
7. identify, evaluate, and resolve a variety of issues leading to poor innovative performance in large firms as well as entrepreneurial firms; and
8. be able to articulate their own informed perspectives on tech innovation.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. define an open-ended design problem based on customer needs from primary market research.
2. develop solutions that meet or exceed customer needs, following a systematic design process.
3. enhance team working skills (3-5 members, preferably in a multidisciplinary setting).
4. manage multiple aspects of a design project, including but not limited to project tasks, budget, schedule, as well as communication within the team and with clients.
5. apply and reinforce fundamental knowledge and skills from students’ engineering disciplinary education through practice and reflection in an action-oriented setting.
6. evaluate the social and environmental benefits and risks of the design solution according to the 17 United Nation Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) and mitigate any potential risks in their final report and final presentations.
7. present their work professionally and effectively to a variety of audiences, including but not limited to project lead, investor, customers, and general public.
8. demonstrate technology and patent research as well as documentation in design process.

[cid:image001.png@01D9572B.222FABA0]
“Cases on Social Issues: For Class Discussion – 2nd Edition<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/social-issue-cases-2e/>” was inspired by students and co-authored by people who are usually under-represented in higher education. These realistic, emotional cases are designed to help students grapple with ethical issues related to discrimination, diversity, equity, inclusion and general social issues in the workplace. These valuable cases are appropriate for upper-level undergraduate or graduate students in the humanities, business, healthcare, agriculture, environmental studies, Indigenous studies, land use studies, law and more. In addition to the background description and scenario, each case comes with modifiable discussion questions, notes on teaching strategies, and a reading list.

Next week for Open Education Week KPU is proud to host Open Pedagogy expert Karen Cangialosi for a talk on:
Bringing Open Pedagogy to Life
Open Pedagogy contextualizes learning in a larger world outside of the classroom making education more relevant, inclusive, equitable and accessible. It enables students to leverage open licenses in order to contribute to the knowledge commons and engage in dialogue with the wider public; but it also supports them to take greater ownership of how and what they learn. By prioritizing connection and community over methodology and content, students in open pedagogy classrooms use a critical lens in their use of digital tools for discovery, creativity and analysis. Open Pedagogy also means trusting students and supporting especially the most marginalized to find and raise their voices, and it can mean empowering students to be the change agents that they would like to be in the world.
Thursday March 9, 3-4 pm (PST) online via Teams. Register by emailing open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca> or by replying to this email.
This event is open to everyone, so please share widely!

I gratefully acknowledge that I live and work on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
Hi All,
SAIT's Pharmacy Technician program has been using Canadian Pharmacists Association Guide to Drugs in Canada<https://www.dk.com/ca/book/9781553632931-cpha-guide-to-drugs/> as a textbook. (It's a very specialized drug reference manual that they really like because of the level the content is written at as well as because it's Canada-specific.) However, the book is now out of print, and we've had no success contacting the copyright holder to license the sections they use for classes. We've shared the Canadian nursing pharmacology book<https://opentextbc.ca/nursingpharmacology/> with the faculty, but it was not a good fit. I'm hoping this group might know of any other resources on this topic.
Any info is appreciated!

Oki, Amba'wastitch, Danit'ada, Tân'si, Hello. We would like to acknowledge that SAIT is situated on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy. The City of Calgary encompasses a region that the Blackfoot tribes of Southern Alberta described as Moh'kinsstis, meaning 'Elbow,' in reference to its location at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. Since time immemorial, this region was a traditional gathering place for the tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy. We are meeting/gathered on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, which, today encompasses the Indigenous people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta: the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina, the Stoney Nakoda First Nations, the Northwest Métis Homeland - Region 3.

Hello everyone.
The group I lead up at Douglas College is interested in adapting the Pressbook "Universal Design for Learning (UDL) for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA)" for British Columbia. https://ecampusontario.pressbooks.pub/universaldesign/
I am looking for two things:
1. Is anyone else already working on adapting this book? If so, how could we help?
2. Is there anyone interested in working with us on this project?
Thank you.
