The Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries (CAAL)<https://caul-cbua.ca/> is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2022 AtlanticOER Development Grants<https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca/grants> (@AtlanticOER<https://twitter.com/AtlanticOER>). AtlanticOER Development Grants are intended to encourage and support educators in the Atlantic Region in the adaptation, adoption, creation, and curation of open educational resources (OER), and to increase access to course materials for students. As part of the process, the text will be updated to include Canadian references and perspectives and to make the text more useful and applicable to MSVU students. Hope you will join us for this webinar: Indigenous Open Educational Resources: Respectfully Uplifting Community Voices May 24, 2022 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am Open education is grounded in Western understandings of ownership, protocol, and accessibility. Often open education has a goal of making all knowledges available for all peoples. Within Canadian copyright law is tension with Indigenous knowledges and Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The open education community must carefully consider Indigenous knowledges and self-determination, which are deeply rooted in community-defined ethics and protocols and do not fit into ordinary academic contexts. This session will explore some of the concerns around open educational resources (OER) and Indigenous knowledges while using Indigenous worldviews to better understand how Indigenous knowledges can be respectfully incorporated into OER. Facilitator Kayla Lar-Son is of Métis and Ukranian settler ancestry, originally from Treaty Six territory, Tofield, Alberta. She currently resides on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The SPARC Open Education Leadership Program is an intensive professional development program designed to empower academic professionals with the knowledge, skills, and connections to lead successful open education initiatives that benefit students. The program is open to all academic professionals with open education responsibilities—including instructional designers, project coordinators, and other related roles. We are excited to continue this program for a sixth cohort, and look forward to working with more exceptional open education advocates in the coming year. The SPARC Open Education Leadership Program is an intensive, two-semester professional development program to empower open education advocates with the knowledge, skills, and connections to lead successful open education initiatives that benefit students. - Participate in an intensive, semester-long online course during the fall to gain comprehensive knowledge of open education, stakeholder engagement, and how to design an initiative on campus. - Plan and execute a capstone project during the spring that has an impact on open education locally and that contributes back to the broader movement. - Develop a vibrant community of practice among a cohort of peers, and grow as a leader through mentorship support. - Attend the Open Education Conference <https://openeducationconference.org/> virtually, and receive additional guidance to make the most of the experience and networking. Who should apply? - Eligible candidates must be employed at a higher education institution, consortium or related organization in the U.S. or Canada, or at one of SPARC’s international members. Candidates from SPARC member institutions will receive special consideration and a tuition discount. - The program is open to all academic professionals with open education-related responsibilities, including library professionals, instructional designers, project coordinators and related roles. Student leaders are also welcome to apply. - Candidates should be prepared for a significant time commitment (6-8 hours per week for online coursework in the fall, average 5 hours per week for capstone work in the spring) and have the support of their institution and/or supervisor to participate. Tuition Tuition is inclusive of both semesters, and covers all costs except attendance at the Open Education Conference (virtual). Institutions are expected to sponsor tuition on behalf of the accepted applicant, and will be asked to sign a standard enrollment agreement. SPARC Member Rate: $1,995 USD / $2,495 CAD Non-Member Rate: $2,995 USD or $3,995 CAD SPARC recognizes that all institutions are facing budget pressures due to COVID-19 and has worked to reduce costs as much as possible. The 2022-23 tuition rates reflect a more than 20% discount over pre-COVID rates. Tuition discount SPARC offers tuition discounts to support the participation of candidates who would increase the diversity of the cohort. Report: Teaching and Learning with Open Educational Resources (OER)

Hello All A new report has been published by Achieving the Dream and SRI Education. This study addresses the urgent need to better understand how the use of OER can support educational equity, particularly in educational settings that serve historically marginalized student populations. The report identifies five dimensions of open education and culturally responsive teaching: * Study agency and ownership, or the extent to which the course and positions students as leaders of their learning * Inclusive content, or how the instructor brings in diverse perspectives and tailors the content to students’ backgrounds * Collaborative knowledge generation, or how students apply/develop new theories or contribute to “renewable” or generative assignments. * Critical consciousness, or how the instructor provides students with real-world assignments, decolonizes the curriculum, and addresses power imbalances * Classroom culture, or how the instructor cultivates strong relationships and an inclusive environment The study is based on interviews with faculty and administrators, student focus groups, and course observations at eight community colleges, and is a careful examination of teaching practice among committed OER users and technology-oriented faculty members. Evaluating Open Pedagogy

A colleague and I are developing a Sustainability Fellowship at USask that will include the fellows: * Learning about course design using the UN SDGs and open pedagogy * Creating a resource for other educators on how to integrate the SDGs into their own course design and teaching * Teaching a class where they will integrate one or more of the SDGs, hopefully including open pedagogy * Supporting and advising their departmental / college colleagues to do the same We have modules in our course evaluation system for OER and for sustainability, but not for open pedagogy. This event brought together academic librarians from across Canada and gave them the opportunity to build their open education leadership skills. The OEWG has taken the materials from this in-person event and created the Open Education Leadership Essentials Workshop-in-a-Box (OeLE WIAB). These materials will eventually be released under a Creative Commons licence. This will allow members of the open education community to use the OeLE WIAB resources to run similar in-person or online training events. On April 20, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm EDT, the OEWG will hold an Edit-a-thon to provide individuals outside of the CARL OEWG with the opportunity to review and help improve the draft English-language version of the OeLE WIAB. Once the draft English materials are finalized, they will be translated into French. Please join us for this interactive event. Project for Creation of Diverse Human Anatomy and Physiology Multimedia OER

Hello all, An instructor at my institution is interested to beginning a project (or collaborating on an existing one) to work with student artists and actors in order to create a range of human anatomy multimedia resources that are more representative of both anatomical diversity and the diversity of folks teaching and learning in anatomy and physiology. This would include, but isn't limited to, ensuring a diversity of skin tones and body types in anatomical drawings and videos, as well as diversifying them to include sexual and ethnic diversity. If anyone is already engaged in this type of work, or has any resources to suggest, I would love to hear from them! I have been working as a consultant, researcher and instructional designer in this area since 2002. I am conducting a study for the Open University of England (OUK) that aims to explore the many challenges that K-12 teachers faced when using emergency remote learning during the pandemic period and if, at all, and in which ways you have made use of Open Educational Resources (OER) or Open Educational Practices (OEP) in your pedagogical practices during this period. The criteria to participate in this study is that you teach K-12 and have familiarity with the use of OER. The study will take place over 6 months. During this period, you will be invited to participate in a 45-to-60-minute online interview individually. After this initial interview, you will be invited to participate in an online workshop so that I can validate the data collected and analyzed during the online interview. The risks associated with participating in this study are negligible and participation is voluntary. Data containing comments regarding participation in the online interview and online workshop will not include information capable of identifying participants, and names will be replaced by pseudonyms. The benefits are your contribution to a better understanding of what obstacles were present during this pandemic period, how these obstacles were overcome, and whether the use of OER supported your professional practice. This study will help inform new sharing policies or practices in times of crisis, which is significant for the teaching practices of K-12 teachers in Canada and for the profession as a whole. Join UBC-O for Honouring Indigenous Writers

In December 2015, Daniel Heath Justice began a Twitter campaign to share the names of Indigenous writers. The reason for his efforts was to: “… push back against the frequent assumptions that our literary history is any less complex, robust, or diverse than that of other peoples" (Daniel Heath Justice, Why Indigenous Literatures Matter?<https://www.wlupress.wlu.ca/Books/W/Why-Indigenous-Literatures-Matter2>). This is a full-time and ongoing position located within the Teaching & Learning Commons<https://www.kpu.ca/teaching-and-learning> at Kwantlen Polytechnic University<https://www.kpu.ca/> (KPU). See: https://tre.tbe.taleo.net/tre01/ats/careers/v2/viewRequisition?org=JT63GS&c… The Open Education Strategist provides project management and support for various open education initiatives and direct pedagogical consultation and technical training to KPU educators and programs on how to discover, adopt, adapt, or create open educational resources (OER) and how to design learning experiences that integrate principles of open pedagogy. The incumbent oversees the regular collection, management, and reporting of data for the Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program, plans the Open Education Research Institute, and provides support to OER grantees, Open Pedagogy Fellows, and Open Education Research Fellows. Through consultations, materials and training, the incumbent communicates open education trends and practices to educators and peers. Collaborating with Teaching and Learning Commons staff, librarians, and other stakeholders within and outside of KPU, this position advances, supports, and evaluates open educational practices for KPU. Qualified candidates will have current knowledge of Creative Commons licenses and how to discover, adopt, revise, and remix OER educational resources (OER). A demonstrated ability to create or adapt OER using open education tools (e.g., Pressbooks, H5P, etc.), current knowledge of open pedagogy (e.g., renewable assignments), and the ability to design, develop and deliver information, resources and training on open educational practices is required. A Bachelor’s degree is required. A specialization in Communications, Education, Marketing, Educational Technology, or Library & Information Science would be an asset. This is a unionized (BCGEU) position that includes benefits. Call for Contributions - Indigenous Knowledges and Open Education Book Project (Please forward)

Dear colleagues, An editorial team based at UBC Okanagan is putting out a call for chapter proposals for an open-access book about open pedagogy and the open education movement. This book will centre Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing with regard to open education. Chapter proposals can be for essays, research papers, or case studies between 4,000 and 6,000 words, excluding references. Proposals are due March 15, 2022. Two new open textbooks in philosophy: epistemology and aesthetics

The overarching theme is critical change, and the subthemes are the transitions of online learning and teaching; addressing the new iniquities; and sustaining positive change. There is also a wildcard subcategory for "innovative and inventive ideas around research or practice" that don't fit any of the subthemes. Program for Open Scholarship Education (POSE): Spring 2022 Session

Dear colleagues, UBC is once again running the Program for Open Scholarship and Education (POSE)<https://pose.open.ubc.ca/> in the spring 2022 semester from January to April. Registration is open to anyone in post-secondary who is interested. POSE is a four-month flexible and blended program that will help you develop foundational knowledge of Open Scholarship, Open Education, and Open Research. POSE will explore how open copyright licenses, collaborative practices, and networked technologies have the potential to lower barriers to knowledge by making the processes and products of scholarship more distributed, transparent, and accessible. POSE is intended for faculty, staff, postdocs, and students with an interest in open research, open access, open data and open education. The program is open to UBCO, UBCV, and non-UBC faculty, staff, and students at the post-secondary level. You will learn about: * Open Education * Open Access * Open Research * Open Data * Open Tools To support participant flexibility, the program is composed of online self-paced modules that you can complete over four months. You are also required to participate in two online synchronous sessions during the program. We will also host optional sessions each month where you can engage with various practitioners in the different areas of open scholarship and meet other participants in a synchronous environment. Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. The first module will be released on January 1, 2022. The POSE kick-off session will be on January 18, 2022, and the wrap-up session will be on April 28, 2022.
