This month, we are bringing the Canadian open education community together for a discussion on Accessibility in Open Education. Calls in this series take place on the third Wednesday of most months. While this month’s discussion will be primarily in English, bilingual moderators will be on hand to help ensure participants are able to contribute in the official language of their choice. Apply by June 20 to run a Wikipedia assignment in Fall 2021!

Dear colleagues, BCcampus recently received notice of an opportunity to collaborate with Wiki Education in the Fall 2021 term. Below is the modified text from a message that we received about this opportunity. The deadline to run a Wikipedia assignment in Fall 2021 is rapidly approaching! To run a Wikipedia assignment this Fall, submit your application by June 20. Wiki Education's support is fully funded, and there are no fees to run a Wikipedia assignment. The reasons to run a Wikipedia assignment are myriad, but here are some reflections that capture the essence of the project: "Although many students admitted they had first felt intimidated by the thought of their work being ‘out there’ on the internet, they all commented on the huge sense of achievement they felt seeing their articles published on Wikipedia at the end of semester and how contributing to global knowledge was incredibly fulfilling." —Professor Victoria Austin, University of Winnipeg "One of the things I loved about this project was the idea of being able to improve something on a public platform and offer substantive research that could be helpful to someone who might not have access to the same resources we are so lucky to have as students at the University of Michigan." —Aja Brandmeier, Student, University of Michigan To apply for a spot in the program, follow these steps: 1. After you complete the orientation, you'll be asked to launch the Assignment Design Wizard. Go through the wizard to create your course page. Your course page will be the central hub for your Wikipedia assignment, and it's how you receive support from Wiki Education. When you're ready, submit the course page, and your application will be complete! We will notify you by July 16 if we are able to offer you a spot for the Fall 2021 term. He is the Chair-Elect of the Partnership Among South Carolina’s Academic Libraries (PASCAL), the State’s academic library consortium’s Affordable Learning Committee, which engages in a variety of activities that promote the use of open textbooks and other OER resources to librarians and academic faculty statewide. His current areas of research include strategies instructors can employ to increase student use of OER in their learning, open pedagogy as an approach to increase student research and information literacy skills, as well as developing OER materials on robotics, mechatronics, and advanced manufacturing. Call for Authors | Intro to Crim OER

Dr. Hassan is looking for contributors to author two chapters in a much-anticipated, Canada-focused, Introduction to Criminology openly-licensed textbook. My name is Dr. Shereen Hassan and I am an SFU criminology alumni. I completed my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Simon Verdun-Jones in 2010. I am now a faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in the Criminology department and have been here for almost 17 years. I am reaching out about an opportunity to contribute to an Open Education Resource for the Introduction to Criminology course. This text will be the first of its kind in Canadian Criminology and is unique as it seeks to incorporate Indigenous knowledge, history and content in a way that Criminology texts to date have failed to do. Dr. Gail Anderson has contributed in the area of biological explanations of crime, and Dr. Zachary Rowan and Michaela McGuire have co-authored a chapter on learning theories. There are authors from several other universities in B.C. and elsewhere, so it's quite a collaborative effort! I am still looking for authors in the area of (1) Environmental Criminology and (2) Measuring Crime and Methods. For environmental Criminology, we were hoping this chapter could begin with a discussion of the classical school and from that, stem into rational choice/choice theories to include also routine activities and other theories falling under this umbrella. The methods chapter should cover UCR, GSS and self-report surveys. It will also be necessary to introduce the idea of statistics, surveys, etc., as one method of measuring crime, but also talk about how qualitative inquiry is important for measuring things like perceptions of crime, severity, etc. A basic introduction to the various methods that criminologists use could be weaved into this chapter. Key methods concepts briefly defined here would include: empirical, qualitative and quantitative, sampling, reliability, validity, deductive and inductive, correlation, case studies and experiments. A detailed discussion of Indigenous methodologies, including but not limited to oral history, would be instrumental, as well as a contextual background for students to better understand the statistics which demonstrate the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in crime statistics. We are flexible on deadlines, and we are hoping to have a draft by the end of summer. This text is an introductory text, so the idea here is to provide a brief overview, but to also address this theoretical framework's application to Indigenous principles, Indigenous peoples, Indigenous issues in some way, wherever possible. We have asked authors to keep the chapters short (approximately 4000 words) or as close to that as possible. It would be a wonderful honour to have you contribute to this important project. CAUL-CBUA AtlanticOER Intern Position - Employment Opportunity for College/University Graduates

Hello Everyone, CAUL-CBUA has been approved for funding from the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program (an internship program for unemployed or underemployed college or university graduates) for a 26-week, full-time intern position for a postsecondary program graduate<https://young-canada-works.canada.ca/Opportunity/ProjectDetails?projectId=1…> (any college or university; any program) with responsibilities focused on: 1. Project management for the AtlanticOER Repository and Service<https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca/> (open educational resources), including user support; and 2. Leadership of a member-centric process to evaluate the current CAUL-CBUA website and intranet<https://caul-cbua.ca/>, as well as stakeholder needs in a website and intranet, with the final deliverable being a report to the CAUL-CBUA Executive Director detailing options and recommendations. This position starts on May 31st, and it will be fully virtual, so the candidate can work from anywhere. They must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada, and be legally entitled to work in Canada. The key role for the internship is in project management and service support around OER, so the candidate can come from any field of study. In the 2021/2022 academic year students using these OER textbooks will have consistent access to quality learning resource at no cost to them which will make learning more accessible. Under the supervision of an instructor, a NSCC student will be engaged to review and suggest improvements to the OER’s so that they are optimized from the student perspective. The success of this initiative may also encourage other faculty to adopt and adapt more OERs. It is also suitable for standalone individual use. TSS is created through collaboration with people who stutter (PWS), their families, friends and caregivers and speech language pathologists. This open education resource will introduce learners to issues in stuttering research and help develop skills that will be useful for students considering graduate study in speech language pathology. It is meant to challenge everyone to better understand the lived experiences of PWS and SLPs in the clinical treatment of stuttering. Question re: H5P and Pressbooks

Hi Everyone, I have a prof who is on a joint session between the Canada Media Fund, DOCTalks and SSHRC for Congress this June. His concept is to use an H5P branching scenario that will guide users through a series of videos to learn more about using documentary media for knowledge mobilization purposes. He’s wondering if Pressbooks be a good place to host this? The session will be live and synchronous but attendees will have the chance to engage with the videos at their own pace through the session for 15-20 minutes. Also, there are estimates that there could be up to 600 attendees. Does anyone know if Pressbooks is able to handle that level of traffic? I tried posting a question to the H5P Forum, but although I can login to the H5P.org website, I can’t seem to post to the forum, so I thought that I’d take it out to this list as I don’t have much experience yet with H5P. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. You’re invited: Open Education Challenge Series during Open Education Week

Dear colleagues, Open Education Week is fast approaching! To celebrate, BCcampus is hosting an Open Education Challenge Series<https://oechallenge.opened.ca/about-the-open-education-challenge-series/> for educators interested in learning more about open education practices (OEP). From March 1 to March 5, we will release two challenges a day. A challenge is a micro activity that you can do in 10 minutes or less that will introduce a small aspect of open education. Everyone is welcome to participate, but the challenges are designed for educators who are new to open education. Topics to explore include open licences, open textbooks, and perhaps even open pedagogy! This isn’t a bootcamp or crash course in open education: it’s more of a tasting buffet of appetizers, designed to allow even the most time-constrained educators to participate. Please share this event with your departments and networks, especially those who are new to open education. Invite your colleagues to participate with you! It’s a great way to learn about OEP together.
