Hi all,

Unfortunately I will not be able to make the meeting as I am currently out of the country, but wanted to take the opportunity to send a quick introduction to you all.

My name is Brady Yano and I work for SPARC, a library advocacy organization representing over 200 institutions across Canada and the United States. SPARC focuses on advancing the open agenda in the fields of open access, open education and open data. I am the Assistant Director of Open Education which has me focused on supporting our library members in advancing OER on their campuses while also leading special projects. One project in particular that I am excited to share is the Connect OER Project (name subject to change) which will serve as a directory of OER efforts happening at institutions across Canada and the U.S. The official launch of the project is set for September 2017. I look forward to talking to you folks more about the project in the near future.

Prior to working at SPARC, I served as a student leader for two years at Simon Fraser University. While there, I was involved in efforts to advance OER adoptions at SFU and neighbouring institutions. If anyone is interested in discussing student engagement, please feel free to reach out.

Hope you have a great meeting.

Best,
Brady

Hello all,

I will be out of the office on Jan. 26 and will not be able to attend this meeting. My apologies for that.

In terms of updates for our institution, the faculty at Yukon College is starting to become more inclined to the use of OERs, particularly in English and Business Communication. New online courses in these areas are being designed with the principle that most (if not all) resources will be open and accessible to students. OERs are being adopted from a number of sources, and at least a couple of instructors are either adapting or designing their own materials under open license. Our college is unique in terms of courses and student population (a majority is first nations), so we are also trying to include some concepts of indigenization in this process.

This is still not an institutional change, but it is part of what our Teaching and Learning Lab is recommending for the future. Next month we will have a week dedicated to faculty PD, and OERs is one of the big themes. The expectation is that other areas will follow the same path.

Again, apologies for missing this meeting a second time. Hope to be able to make it to the next one.

Cheers,
