Hi Heather, this is a great question and one that I think might merit further exploration for many disciplines. It raises additional questions for me, what type of publisher homework systems are out there, what do they provide, how might we target the development of open equivalents (if what these systems provide has clear pedagogic value)? I definitely want educators to have good tools for their teaching and learners to have effective active practice opportunities. If there's something we can do to understand the needs (and even the desires), I feel we have a better shot at answering these types of questions effectively! I'm thinking Canadian national matrix perhaps of publisher products and the type of pedagogy they support. Awareness and knowledge for open support advocates is sometimes so useful and helps those we're trying to convince know that we care and want to stay informed. Food for thought perhaps. Our College of Engineering is doing a major revamp of their first year curriculum. As part of that they have set a goal to reduce textbook costs for students and will be considering OER when they can find appropriate materials. They are also looking for a homework system(s). I’m trying to persuade them to avoid commercial systems since that will simply replace money going to publishers for textbooks with money going to publishers for homework systems. I’m wondering if anyone might have some criteria that they provide instructors / departments with for determining if the OER available will meet their NEEDS (wants are another story) and what modifications might be necessary, as well as what criteria they might use for determining appropriate ancillary resources and tools. Their existing criteria for the homework system would not be found in any existing systems, so I need to show them some more realistic criteria.
