Each course pack is divided into modules or weeks that contain teaching materials such as lesson plans, lecture slides, student activities, and readings. All four of these courses are also aligned with open textbooks written by the same author as the course pack. Open Education Week celebration at BCIT

This year, this international event takes place March 6 to 10. There are lots of events happening during that week and I hope you can take some time to attend some, either virtually or in person. Open Education Community, This year, BCcampus will be funding two adaptation projects focused on making open textbooks more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. The books selected are well adopted in British Columbia, but it has been a number of years since they were updated. As a first step, we are looking for two people to review each book using an Equity in OER Rubric. Applications are due by the end of the day on March 13, 2023. FW: Get Into the Openverse for finding CC Licensed Images and Audio

Hi there fellow Open Educators, The following is adapted from a discussion in OE Global. I thought some of you might find it interesting: We know everybody has their favorite source (or a curated list of them) for finding openly licensed media. However, the Openverse, which is the evolution of the Creative Commons CC Search that was adopted and operated by WordPress, is now its own entity at https://openverse.org/<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fopenverse…> Why is this important? Beyond being a searchable tool of over 600 million images and audio, you can be confident that each item is licensed under a Creative Commons license. And for every result you find, Openverse offers a readily used cut and paste attribution statement. From the first result, you can filter by different licenses (e.g. find ones you can modify, so it removes results that are licensed no derivates. Next, from my dogs playing, I want to focus on just images https://openverse.org/search/image?q=dog%20playing<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fopenverse…>. Nice. Now I have more filters available. As a whole, the OER is amply broad to serve as the main textbook for an introductory course, yet each chapter is deep enough to be useful as a supplement for subject-area courses; authors use plain and accessible language as much as possible, but introduce more advanced, technical concepts where appropriate; the text gives due attention to the historical “canon” of mainstream criminological thought, but it also challenges many of these ideas by exploring alternative, critical, and marginalized perspectives. After all, criminology is more than just the study of crime and criminal law; it is an examination of the ways human societies construct, contest, and defend ideas about right and wrong, the meaning of justice, the purpose and power of laws, and the practical methods of responding to broken rules and of mending relationships.
