Instead of focusing our energy all in one week, we are spreading our Open Education Week 2025 events and workshops throughout the month of March. We’re kicking things off early tomorrow with an info session on our UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship.
We have workshops planned on finding and creating OERs, using Pressbooks, and how to engage in Open Pedagogy. The BC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL) group is co-hosting an event on practicing reciprocal values in challenging times, and we have gathered 2 KPU faculty members who are using Generative AI for Open Education who will be sharing their experiences in a panel event (see image below).

Please consider applying for the spring offering of our facilitated Open Pedagogy Learning Circle! The OEN has heard our community ask for more help understanding and using open pedagogy, so we’ve created a collaborative, resource-rich learning environment over the course of seven synchronous, one-hour sessions this spring. Join our virtual, facilitated Learning Circle to share, learn, discuss, and create open pedagogy! There is no cost for participation.
We are looking for a total of 12 participants from OEN member institutions for this offering of Open Pedagogy Learning Circle running on Tuesdays beginning in February.
We try to vary the enrollment, so we are hoping for a combination of instructors, librarians, instructional designers or other roles that directly support faculty in pedagogy-related concerns. It is used at KPU in the BSN program, at Douglas College in Early Childhood program, Gender and Sexuality Studies at SFU and Criminology at KPU and SFU. It has chapters on the NEVR Model used for collaboration, on violence against all genders, in the workplace, in post-secondary institutions and a chapter on burnout.

This programme aims to create high-quality, openly licensed textbooks that are freely available to everyone, supporting equitable access to education and fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing for ‘knowledge for all’.

Apply for the Certificate in Open Pedagogy (formerly Open Educational Practices) through the Open Education Network
The Open Education Network is accepting applications for faculty and faculty partners (librarians, instructional designers, etc.) to receive a certification in open pedagogy. Applicants should be higher education faculty, librarians, instructional designers, and others who have a lesson, unit, or other educational experience that they wish to transform through the use of open pedagogy. Participants will pilot their transformed curriculum in the spring of 2025. The Certificate in Open Pedagogy offers formal training in open pedagogy as grounded in the principles of social justice, a community of peers, and expert instructors in order to transform learning to be more accessible and inclusive. Participants who successfully complete the full program will receive a Certificate in Open Pedagogy from the Open Education Network (University of Minnesota) and 60 Credit Hour Units (CEU's). While we prefer applicants who apply as a team (faculty + partner), we will do our best to pair individuals who do not have someone with whom to partner.
About the Certificate in Open Pedagogy
The Certificate in Open Pedagogy is a professional development program that will create actionable pathways for faculty and librarians to implement open education for the transformation of learning.
Faculty and partners (librarians, instructional designers, etc.) will complete a nine-week long, asynchronous course in the spring of 2025 about the range of open educational practices with modules on the hallmarks of open education, copyright and Creative Commons licensing, the hallmarks of open pedagogy, the benefits and limitations of OEP, accessibility, and student empowerment and agency. Together, the faculty and faculty partner pairs will create an Action Plan to be implemented the following spring that seeks to transform learning through the power of open education.
In addition, the cohort will benefit from close engagement with program faculty—open education leaders who have gained expertise through experience, professional development, and participation in various national initiatives.
The integrated components of the certification program include online content, instructor-led cohorts, and action plan support and assessment.
In order to assure we can offer personalized attention to participants throughout the program, the cohort will be limited to 20 teams (5 teams per instructor) or 50 participants total.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
1. Gain fluency in open pedagogy, including core benefits, challenges, and potential;
2. Identify the synergy between the principles of social justice and open education;
3. Create a personalized action plan that will provide the building blocks for an educational experience (module, lesson, unit, etc.) to be transformed through the use of open pedagogy;
4. Consider best practices of accessibility when designing the action plan
5. Center the needs of students and consider their empowerment and agency while designing and implementing the action plan;
6. Develop strategies for assessing the effectiveness of the action plan;
7. Connect and collaborate with a cohort of higher ed. professionals dedicated to developing open education in order to create more accessible, inclusive learning.
Selection Criteria
Participants will be selected based on the following:
1. A CV demonstrating your responsibilities as a faculty member or librarian;
2. A completed questionnaire that provides information about you and your institution;
3. A clearly articulated interest in open education and desire to make learning more equitable and inclusive through the power of open education;
4. A desire to revise curriculum or support the revision of curriculum through open pedagogy and the demonstrated agency to do so.
Certificate Calendar
January 5 - March 9, 2025: Participants will participate in asynchronous online instruction, including readings and discussions with their cohorts.
April 9 & 10: Project Symposium for participants to share the OEP Action Plan they developed and refined throughout the online course. Online course assessment will be shared.
Fall 2025: Participants will implement their OEP projects. One or more synchronous calls with cohorts will be planned for participants to share questions, reflections, and encouragement as they implement their action plans with their librarian partner while receiving instructional support.
End of fall 2025: Program assessment by participants is planned.

Study participants. This study explores the experiences of KPU faculty who teach online classes using open pedagogy to support social justice. Therefore, to participate, you:
* must be currently employed as a faculty member in any discipline at KPU
* may be employed at KPU part-time or full-time
* may be employed at KPU with a short-term contract (non-regular type 1), a long-term contract (non-regular type 2), or may have permanent status (regularized)
* must be currently teaching one or more online classes in which you use open pedagogy to support social justice, and/or may have taught in one or more online classes in the past where you used open pedagogy to support social justice, and/or may be scheduled to teach in one or more online classes in an upcoming semester where you will use open pedagogy to support social justice
For the purposes of this study:
* Online courses can include courses that are synchronous, asynchronous, blended, or that are otherwise mediated through an internet connection.
* Open pedagogy can include (but is not limited to) students creating or co-creating open resources, open content, H5P resources, or open textbooks; creating resources for a community or client; creating teachable content or resources for students; blogging; podcasting; or creating or co-creating a rubric.
Study description. Participating in this study will involve being interviewed twice by the principal investigator. The interviews will be private/one-on-one and will be held virtually through MS Teams. Each interview is anticipated to require a time commitment of 60-90 minutes (2-3 hours total), and each interview will be recorded and then transcribed. The interviews will collect information about your experiences using open pedagogy in online courses to support social justice. The principal investigator will work with each study participant to determine the interview days/times.
Voluntary participation. Your participation in this research project is completely voluntary. Refusal to participate in this study will not impact our relationship as colleagues.
Full withdrawal of consent. If you choose to withdraw from an interview in full, any information you have shared in that interview will be deleted and will not used in the analysis of the data. You can inform the researcher of your full withdrawal either verbally or by sending an email. You can fully withdraw consent for the first interview at any time until you have reviewed the first interview transcript. This will be scheduled to take place at the beginning of the second interview. However, should you wish to not participate in a second interview or are otherwise unavailable to participate in a second interview, you will have one week from the date the researcher provides you with a digital copy of your first interview transcript to withdraw your full consent. No response to a request to review your first interview transcript will be assumed to indicate consent remains intact and in full. Full withdrawal from the second interview is possible only until one week from the date the researcher provides you with a digital copy of your second interview transcript for review. No response to a request to review your second interview transcript will be assumed to indicate consent remains intact and in full.
Partial withdrawal of consent. After each interview, you will have an opportunity to review the transcript to see if there are any portions you withdraw consent from being included. If you choose to withdraw one or more portions of your interviews, any information that is being withdrawn will be deleted and will not used in the analysis of the data. You can inform the researcher which portions you withdraw either verbally or by sending an email. Partial withdrawal from the first interview is possible only you have reviewed the first interview transcript. This will be scheduled to take place at the beginning of the second interview. Risks. There are no known physical risks to participating in this research project. However, because the study is collecting data pertaining to your lived experience, it is possible that sensitive topics could be discussed, potentially resulting in emotional distress. Benefits. KPU faculty members who participate in the study will have the opportunity to share their experiences in using open pedagogy to support social justice in their online classes, and this information could then potentially be used by university administrators to improve support for open pedagogy and social justice. Additionally, participants may have a better understanding of their own teaching practices and positionality, which can potentially help facilitate their own further reflection and professional development as a post-secondary educator.
Compensation. No compensation is provided for participating in this study.
Confidentiality, data retention, and data security. Your privacy and confidentiality will be protected throughout this study. You are encouraged to use headphones and a private space when you are being interviewed. Electronic data collected by the principal investigator will be stored on secure servers located in Canada at Athabasca University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Information you provide will be de-identified, anonymous, and kept confidential. During the analysis of the data, pseudonyms will be assigned to the participants, and names of courses, course codes, or other information that could directly or indirectly be used to identify participants will be anonymized and de-identified. The study results will be used, presented, and published by the principal investigator in partial fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Education at Athabasca University. As well, the anonymized results of this research may be presented at workshops, conferences, and/or in publications.
Data collected in support of this research project will be retained for a period of five years following the completion of the study (anticipated completion: December 2025).

It draws on the fields of marketing, business, communications, media studies, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The book invites readers to examine the internal forces that shape consumer decision making, such as perceptions, motivations, personality, and attitudes as well as the external ones, such as social and situational influences, culture, and subcultures. This text centres the lived experiences of today’s consumers, specifically, undergraduate students. The author has also made efforts to decentre whiteness and dominant culture perspectives wherever possible to ensure a broader and more accurate representation of diverse consumers.

The OEN has heard our community ask for more help understanding and using open pedagogy, so we’ve created a collaborative, resource-rich learning environment over the course of seven synchronous, one-hour sessions this spring. Join our virtual, facilitated Learning Circle to share, learn, discuss, and create open pedagogy! There is no cost for participation. We are looking for a total of 12 participants from OEN member institutions for this offering of Open Pedagogy Learning Circles. We try to vary the enrollment, so we are hoping for a combination of instructors/faculty, and librarians, instructional designers or other roles that directly support faculty in pedagogy-related concerns.

* Build a foundational understanding of open pedagogy to be expanded upon through activities that allow for a collaborative definition of open pedagogy.
* Discover what open pedagogy does as well as and how it can be incorporated in the classroom through exposure to a variety of engaging open pedagogy assignments.

Facilitator
The Learning Circle on Open Pedagogy will be facilitated by OEN Open Educational Practices Specialist, Jamie Witman, who will also be available for consultations outside of the synchronous sessions to assist you with your questions related to open pedagogy.

We are now accepting applications for 12 participants from OEN member institutions who are interested in learning more about open pedagogy. Applicants should be faculty (Adjuncts/instructors are welcome!) or higher ed. practitioners who directly support faculty (librarians, instructional designers, etc.).
Selection Criteria
Participants will be selected based on the following:
1. Desire to learn more about open pedagogy
2. Commitment to the creation of a renewable assignment/digital learning object
3. Ability to attend and engage in all seven sessions
4. Willingness to give feedback about the Learning Circle experience

In February, we requested your participation in our research study “Assessing the Authorship of Open Education Resources: A Study of Demographics, Expectations, and Experiences.” We are excited to share that we had a tremendous response to our request! Though we are happy with the response, we are still seeking more participants for our study. If you have not completed the survey, please do so before the end of next week, as we will begin analyzing the data and moving forward with the project soon. Please do not fill out the survey again if you have already responded.
As a reminder, this project aims to explore OER (Open Education Resources) textbook authorship. Research in OERs is relatively new, and some questions have yet to be explored empirically. It is currently unknown what demographic groups tend to author OERs or from what institutions OERs tend to emanate. Therefore, our study is an attempt to describe the typical OER author to encourage a diverse pool of OER authors in the future. Using publicly and privately available data, we will assess OER authorship. In the first phase of the study, we will gather the title, subject area, year of publication, author(s)’ name, and author(s)’ email address of each OER textbook in the OER Commons’ Open Textbooks hub (https://oercommons.org/hubs/open-textbooks) Then, we will recruit participants to complete a survey, in which we will assess demographic information about OER authors, current position, current institution, and other demographic information. Finally, we will conduct interviews with a sample of survey participants to understand the experience of an OER author.
We have identified you as an author of an OER textbook in the OER Commons’ Open Textbooks hub (https://oercommons.org/hubs/open-textbooks) If you recieve multiple email invitation, it is because you authored multiple texts in the OER Commons database. The spirit of the photo collection is to allow educators to represent Indigenous peoples in their OER so that Indigenous students can see themselves reflected in their learning materials.

If anyone is interested in learning more about H5P (usable in Moodle, Pressbooks, and Wordpress), UBC is hosting an H5P Symposium on February 21st and 22nd<https://blogs.ubc.ca/h5psymposium/>. In this multi-day online symposium, they aim to further explore how interactivity and opportunities for formative assessment can be embedded into passive learning materials with a special focus on creating interactive videos.
The 2024 H5P Symposium will also explore evidence-based best practices for (a) creating good formative assessment questions, (b) providing timely feedback, and (c) how (and when) to create branching interactive videos that respond and adapt to student feedback. The Symposium will highlight H5P’s strengths and limitations, and highlight successful examples of implementation and course integration for various content types. We will also offer studio time with the support of experienced content creators to introduce you to the authoring platform and help you brainstorm how it could be used in your context.

You are invited to participate in the research study, Foregrounding Indigenous Perspectives: Community and Collaborator Affinities and Conflicts in Open Education.
This research seeks to identify workflows, practices, and unique barriers involved in developing Canadian Indigenous Open Educational Resources (OER)*.
The study is seeking 20 interview participants. The requirements for participation include:
· You self-identify as Indigenous
· You work in/or are affiliated with a Canadian academic institution
· You engage in/or support teaching and learning
The interviews will be held via Zoom and will be recorded for analysis.
Participation in this study involves an interview that will take approximately 60 minutes of your time. In recognition of the knowledge and expertise you bring to this study, an honorarium of $100 will be offered to you for your participation. Should you choose to withdraw your responses from the study after the interview, the honorarium will not be impacted.

I’m excited to share the following new resource: Developing Organizational and Managerial Wisdom – 2nd Edition (Audio plus text version)<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/developingwisdomaudiobook/> by Brad Anderson, an audiobook version of an existing OER. This Pressbook embeds audio recordings in each chapter, provides a playlist of all recordings for uninterrupted listening, and provides links to download the audio files.
Here’s what Brad had to say about this project:
Over the past year, I have realized that most of our students have accessibility issues. Many people’s first reaction to that is doubt, but that, I believe, is because many people still view accessibility through a physical disability lens.
The student working thirty hours a week who must cross two bridges in rush-hour traffic to get to campus has an accessibility issue. So does the student renting a bed in a house with half a dozen roommates and no dedicated workspace, a student caring for a sick family member, one with mental health challenges, or … you get the picture.
How many barriers might we remove if we made an audio version of textbooks available they could listen to while stuck in traffic? Universal design for learning (UDL) is about giving students options in accessing course material, empowering them to fit learning into the unique considerations of their lives.
A couple of years ago, I created this OER textbook under a Creative Commons licence to reduce barriers to learning. Creating an audio version of that text is a continuation of that effort to reduce barriers.
While there were many challenges associated with developing this audiobook, with some creative thinking and advice from one of KPU’s Educational Media Strategists, we were able to overcome them. Going forward, I am excited to encourage other OER authors to consider creating an audiobook versions, as well as streamlining and improving the process.

The OEN has heard our community ask for more help understanding and using open pedagogy, so we’ve created a collaborative, resource-rich learning environment over the course of seven synchronous, one-hour sessions this spring. Join our virtual, facilitated Learning Circle to share, learn, discuss, and create open pedagogy! There is no cost for participation. We are looking for a total of 12 participants from OEN member institutions for this offering of Open Pedagogy Learning Circles. We try to vary the enrollment, so we are hoping for a combination of instructors/faculty, and librarians, instructional designers or other roles that directly support faculty in pedagogy-related concerns.

* Build a foundational understanding of open pedagogy to be expanded upon through activities that allow for a collaborative definition of open pedagogy.
* Discover what open pedagogy does as well as and how it can be incorporated in the classroom through exposure to a variety of engaging open pedagogy assignments.

Facilitator
The Learning Circle on Open Pedagogy will be facilitated by OEN Open Educational Practices Specialist, Jamie Witman, who will also be available for consultations outside of the synchronous sessions to assist you with your questions related to open pedagogy.
Spring 2024 Cohort
We are now accepting applications for 12 participants from OEN member institutions who are interested in learning more about open pedagogy. Applicants should be faculty (Adjuncts/instructors are welcome!) or higher ed. practitioners who directly support faculty (librarians, instructional designers, etc.).
Selection Criteria
Participants will be selected based on the following:
1. Desire to learn more about open pedagogy
2. Commitment to the creation of a renewable assignment/digital learning object
3. Ability to attend and engage in all seven sessions
4. Willingness to give feedback about the Learning Circle experience

An Open Guide to Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC)
Authored by Andrea Niosi and KPU Marketing 4201 Class of Summer 2020
The Open Guide to Integrated Marketing Communications is an OER that was written and edited by KPU students in 2020. It covers a range of topics related to designing and launching integrated marketing campaigns, such as research, audience segmentation, creative briefs, content calendars, and more. The authors have also included reusable materials and templates to support the marketing and communications efforts of those organizations with the smallest of budgets and most limited resources, namely not-for-profit organizations, NGO’s, charities, advocacy groups, and climate & social activists. The Open Guide to IMC is centred around the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and created as an inclusive, equitable, and accessible resource to support quality education.

This fully open textbook on political worldviews deals with the historical development of classical ideologies, while expanding and updating the subject using contemporary political examples and non-Eurocentric examinations of ideology. The textbook includes chapters on Indigenous worldviews, Confucianism, and the future of ideology in the emerging global order. Lorrain’s Logbook: Notes from a Missionary in Mizoram, Northeast India (1891-1936) expands the archive for students of Northeast India. Authored by James Herbert Lorrain (Pu Buanga)—one of the most significant missionaries and linguists to operate in the colonial Indo-Burma borderlands—the Logbook is a record of personal observations across decades, from Lorrain’s arrival in Bengal in 1890 to his departure in 1932 from the Lushai Hills District (today: Mizoram). This entirely new digital transcription and text-searchable online educational resource (OER) unlocks a vital archival source for researchers of imperial frontiers, Asian borderlands, missionization, Mizo history, and beyond. It features an introduction co-authored by Dr. Kyle Jackson (Kwantlen Polytechnic University) and Prof. Joy L. K. Pachuau (Jawaharlal Nehru University).

Generously funded by a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services<https://www.imls.gov/grants/awarded/re-250023-ols-21>, the 2022 pilot offering began with the nine-week long asynchronous course about the range of open educational practices with modules on the hallmarks of OER, copyright, Creative Commons licensing, the hallmarks of OEP, the benefits and limitations of OEP, accessibility, and student empowerment and agency.

Can Open Pedagogy Encourage Care? Student Perspectives<https://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/6901>
Abstract: As a response to the increasing commercialization of postsecondary education, educators argue for a practice of care in education. Open pedagogy (OP) seems like an ideal practice where care, trust, and inclusion can be realized. OP is characterized as a democratic and collaborative pedagogical practice, in which students and teachers work to co-create learning and knowledge using openly licensed materials, open platforms, and other open processes. The purposes of this study were, first, to reveal ways students in postsecondary institutions perceive care and, second, to determine how students suggest OP can be used to create an open/caring learning process. A task-oriented focus group method engaged students from four teaching-focused institutions. The students created open cases on social issues for class discussion and reflected on care and OP processes in postsecondary settings. Using four elements of the ethics of care—attentiveness, responsibility, competence, and trustworthiness—as conceptual categories, the study examined students’ experience of care and care in OP using affective coding and thematic analysis. The results showed that through OP, with teacher support and explicitly designed practices of care, students can assert their agency, have quintessential roles in creating and participating in highly relevant curriculum and importantly, care about others, and be cared for. OP is a process able to involve a diverse population of students and embody care as an all-encompassing practice.

Stitched sewing techniques, how-to, and more

Within the fashion, sewing, and textile classrooms it is a challenge to find a textbook on the topic of sewing that covers the range of skills and techniques taught within these learning spaces. Typically to supplement student learning, handouts will be utilized along with in-class, and in-person demos. The open-source and online format of this OER will enable educators to continually update the resource to meet current student needs, learning outcomes, and reflect best practices within the apparel and fashion industry. Content in this OER supports skills and knowledge learned within the classroom while providing supportive resources for learners. This open-source learning resource contains details and step-by-step instructions, supported with images, videos, and text.
This resource will be continually worked on, with videos, text, and information being added. The vision for this resource is to provide learning resources to the sewing community – an array of learners, with multiple ways of ‘how-to’.

Since learning an additional language and the culture is a journey in itself, ¡Voy en camino! captures the voyage to get there. ¡Voy en camino! has been created to serve the first two introductory Spanish language courses at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and to solidify our commitment to Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC). All units of study are designed to be interactive with embedded audio, videos and links for learners to practice the material along the way. Learners can self-pace and self-test their knowledge both individually and with the assistance of an instructor. ¡Voy en camino! has plenty of opportunities to practice writing and speaking with downloadable capabilities becoming a Spanish teaching and learning tool that promotes and supports sustainable renewable learning. With its digital format and open publication ¡Voy en camino! is also meant to join the Spanish teaching open education community and provide access to learning to interested users along the way.

We are seeking applicants for the next cohort! I would really appreciate it if you would share the call for applications below in your professional networks.
The Open Education Group thanks to generous support from the Hewlett foundation is seeking to support early career researchers to conduct studies in open education (what is open education, click here<https://sparcopen.org/open-education/>) through the open education research fellowship. The purpose is to support education professionals to develop their open education scholarship ideas into published works. Specifically, this fellowship seeks to provide mentorship, community, and some financial support to carry out their ideas in open education research. Financial support includes attendance at the Open Education Conference in 2023 (November 7-9, virtual) and 2024 (in person in the United States, TBD). The fellowship will also pay for article processing charges to allow for publications developed in this fellowship to be publicly available (around $3,000). In addition, fellows will receive a stipend of $1200 per article submitted prior to January 15, 2025, based on their fellowship work.
Applications will be assessed based on its potential contribution to open education, feasibility, and novelty. In the application, prospective fellows will be asked to explain how your proposed research project would be relevant to diversity, inclusion, equity, and access to education. Applicants should have some prior research training and will be asked to list their previous research coursework.
For the purpose of this fellowship, the following groups are considered early career researchers: doctoral graduate student (PhD, EdD, PsyD, DSW, DNP, DBA), postdoctoral researchers, pre-tenure faculty, teaching-track/clinical faculty (including librarians), and faculty at teaching-intensive institutions (liberal arts, community colleges, regional institutions, etc.), K-12 administrators and teachers, and public education employees. Full or part time status applicants are eligible. Tenured faculty at research institutions (R1 or R2) would generally not be considered early career researchers. This workbook is designed for first or second-year sociology of gender or gender studies courses, focusing on the Canadian context. It is divided into five topics - Theory and Concepts, Institutions, Work, Family and Intimate Relationships, and Bodies and Health. This workbook does not replace a textbook, instructor teachings through lectures, class discussion, class assignments, or other standard undergraduate course materials. Instead, this is an activity book: a course companion, working alongside and with those course materials. It is designed to build competency, capacity, and confidence with course materials, concepts, and arguments. It does this by embracing the concepts of embodied learning, iterative scaffolding, and reflexive insight. "Embodied" means doing things with your body and not just your mind; "scaffolding" means breaking things down into constituent parts that can be gathered together to build something bigger; and "reflexive" means thinking about oneself in relation to broad concepts and contexts around us. The workbook presents four types of content. (1) Each chapter has one or two pages of written content deemed "Insights to Think About," which are summative guides to help students grab onto big ideas. (2) The chapters also have "Words to Try," encouraging a usable lexicon. (3) Chapters have thoughtfully designed "Activities." The activities help students to get ideas down, give those ideas meaning and order, and prepare students to do more engaged work in course conversations and higher-stakes assignments. (4) Finally, each section ends with "My Insights On," where students can record their "big picture" ideas and things they want to explore more in their course discussions and other assignments.

La hora del cuento en español is a collection of children’s stories in Spanish authored by Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) students and edited by KPU Faculty Constanza Rojas-Primus and KPU alumna Sofía Rodríguez. The first part of this collection is a selection of stories written by KPU Spanish 1100 students between Fall 2017 and Spring 2019. The second part of this collection is a selection of stories written by KPU Spanish 1101 students between Fall 2020 and Spring 2022. All stories are narrated by Constanza Rojas-Primus and have been translated into English by Sofía Rodríguez. The illustrations in the cover and first part of this collection are artwork of KPU student Cheyenne Pokeda.

Although this open education resource (OER) is written with the needs and abilities of first-year undergraduate criminology students in mind, it is designed to be flexible. As a whole, the OER is amply broad to serve as the main textbook for an introductory course, yet each chapter is deep enough to be useful as a supplement for subject-area courses; authors use plain and accessible language as much as possible, but introduce more advanced, technical concepts where appropriate; the text gives due attention to the historical “canon” of mainstream criminological thought, but it also challenges many of these ideas by exploring alternative, critical, and marginalized perspectives. After all, criminology is more than just the study of crime and criminal law; it is an examination of the ways human societies construct, contest, and defend ideas about right and wrong, the meaning of justice, the purpose and power of laws, and the practical methods of responding to broken rules and of mending relationships.

Join the Open Education Network’s Facilitated Learning Circle on Open Pedagogy
The OEN has heard our community ask for more help understanding and using open pedagogy, so we’ve created a collaborative, resource-rich learning environment over the course of seven synchronous, one-hour sessions this spring. Join our virtual, facilitated Learning Circle to share, learn, discuss, and create open pedagogy! There is no cost for participation.

* Discover what open pedagogy does as well as and how it can be incorporated in the classroom through exposure to a variety of engaging open pedagogy assignments.

Facilitators
The Learning Circle on Open Pedagogy will be facilitated by OEN Fellow Amanda Larson, Affordable Learning Instructional Consultant for The Ohio State University. OEN Open Educational Practices Specialist, Jamie Witman, will be available for 30-minute consultations outside of the synchronous sessions to assist you with your questions related to open pedagogy.
Spring 2023 Cohort
We are now accepting applications for a cohort of 12-18 faculty and faculty partners from OEN member institutions who are interested in learning more about open pedagogy. Applicants should be faculty (Adjuncts/instructors are welcome!) who want help transforming a disposable assignment into a renewable one. We also welcome faculty partners (librarians, instructional designers, Center for Teaching and Learning staff, etc.) interested in creating a digital learning object to illustrate open pedagogy to their faculty. Please pass this opportunity along to interested faculty/instructors!
Selection Criteria
Participants will be selected based on the following:
1. Desire to learn more about open pedagogy
2. Commitment to the creation of a renewable assignment/digital learning object
3. Ability to attend and engage in all seven sessions

OTESSA is the Open/Technology in Education, Society, and Scholarship Association<https://otessa.org/2023/>, and the 2023 conference will be held from May 27-June 2 as part of Congress 2023 (Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences)<https://www.federationhss.ca/en/congress/about-congress>. The OTESSA call for proposals has been extended to January 31, and there are opportunities to present in-person (in Toronto) and online.

Only 250-500 words are needed for a research-oriented or practice-oriented proposal. If you wish to publish as well, you can submit a proceeding (1000-2000 words – or media) now or at any later date. Please do spread the word of our final call as growing our community will help to give us the support needed to further advance our goals, systems, and operations to build out our community and advocacy for our field in ways that support both research and practice.

This fellowship is designed to assist faculty with creating renewable assignments (all of which will carry a Creative Commons<https://creativecommons.org/choose/> license) to help students become agents of change in their own communities. Each fellowship team (which will include at least one faculty member from KPU and one faculty member from a partner institution will design three renewable assignments during the Summer 2021 semester. A minimum of two renewable assignments will be deployed in the classes of each fellowship team during the subsequent academic year.

The book invites readers to examine the internal forces that shape consumer decision making, such as perceptions, motivations, personality, and attitudes as well as the external ones, such as social and situational influences, culture, and subcultures. This text centres the lived experiences of today’s consumers, specifically, undergraduate students. The author has also made efforts to decentre whiteness and dominant culture perspectives wherever possible to ensure a broader and more accurate representation of diverse consumers.

This Open Educational Resource, “Cases on Social Issues: For Class Discussion” includes valuable cases on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion for student use. The critical events portrayed in the cases are realistic and emotional, and feature the experiences of under-represented and marginalized people. These thoughtful, contemporary cases pose ethical dilemmas about social issues that encourage post-secondary students and instructors to have stimulating, inclusive, and compassionate discussions. Inspired by input from post-secondary students and authored by people usually under-represented in education material, this resource is designed for upper-level undergraduate or graduate students in the humanities, social sciences, business, healthcare, science, agriculture, environmental studies, law and more. Each case is supplemented with modifiable discussion prompts, notes for teaching strategy, and a short reading list. This resource is a work in progress.

BCcampus has recently released an expression of interest regarding the development of open courses<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/expression-of-interest-devel…>.
BCcampus would like to add further open courses to the open online course collection<https://collection.bccampus.ca/> that align with open textbooks currently in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection. We are looking for B.C. applicants who have developed, adapted, or adopted an open textbook in our B.C. Open Textbook Collection to develop a new open course, or adapt an existing open course, that accompanies the textbook.
This expression of interest is for individuals, groups, or institutions and their representatives (e.g., faculty members, articulation committees, teaching and learning centres, libraries, and OER working groups) in B.C. and the Yukon that are interested in developing or adapting open courses aligned with open textbooks available in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/find-open-textbooks/>.
Note that there is no deadline for applications, as this is an ongoing call.
Estimated completion time: Four months
Grant amount: Up to $8000 per course. Three options:
* $2000 for an existing course that requires little modification
* $5000 for an adaption or major revision of an existing course
* $8000 for development of a new course
Applications will be evaluated by an internal review committee based on the following criteria:
* Experience: Applicants have experience developing OER in B.C. post-secondary education. Preference will be given to applicants who have already developed or adapted an open textbook in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection.
* Plan for timeline of completion of work.
* A realistic budget for the scope of work

This course introduces students to entrepreneurship as an approach to life and to create their own careers. Through foundational concepts and frameworks, this course examines entrepreneurship as a process including: entrepreneurial identity, opportunity creation and evaluation, mobilizing resources, and growth. The course is designed around the major stages in this process, and an overview of factors that are key to entrepreneurial success is provided. This resource is rich in multimedia content including video and H5P interactive activities.

Receive up to $4500 in funding for this annual fellowship that runs from January 1 to December 31 and is aimed at supporting scholarly research on open educational practices by regular faculty at KPU. This may include investigations into the cost savings, perceptions, outcomes, and use of open educational resources (see the Open Education Group’s COUP framework) as well as research on the perceptions and impact of renewable assignments and other forms of open pedagogy.

The Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg> brings together key stakeholders from across the institution to provide advice and support for KPU’s open education initiatives, which include the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources, the development of Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) programs, and the embrace of innovative open pedagogies. The OEWG meets once a semester when it adjudicates KPU’s OER Grant program<https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants>, but conducts most of its activities asynchronously in between those meetings.
As the term of one of our current faculty representatives is soon coming to an end, this is a call for expressions of interest from faculty who would like to join this dynamic group for a two-year term. Please join a voluntary focus group with students from Douglas, KPU, Langara, and TRU in order to help create free and open learning materials. You will attend two to three group sessions of 2.5 hours each, to create cases for class discussions. Your initial questionnaire, focus group and reflections on the process will be analyzed to see if the process of students creating learning materials encourages you to care more for yourself, other students, teachers and the postsecondary community. You could be acknowledged by name as a co-author of the open resource/book, which will be used in BC and beyond. You will have helped to create caring, relevant, ethical study materials. The book invites readers to examine the internal forces that shape consumer decision making, such as perceptions, motivations, personality, and attitudes as well as the external ones, such as social and situational influences, culture, and subcultures. This text centres the lived experiences of today’s consumers, specifically, undergraduate students. The author has also made efforts to decentre whiteness and dominant culture perspectives wherever possible to ensure a broader and more accurate representation of diverse consumers.

In summer 2020, BCcampus began creating a collection of open courses<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcollectio…> to assist instructors and course developers in creating and updating their courses, particularly while transitioning from in-person teaching to online. The collection currently contains nine full courses that are openly licensed and ready for use.
We are looking for B.C. applicants who have developed, adapted, or adopted an open textbook in our B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fopen.bcca…> to develop a new open course, or adapt an existing open course, that accompanies the textbook.
Up to $8000 is available per grant, depending on how much work is required.
Deadline for submissions is September 20, 2021.

This is a free online conference that will be held in English.
There is an open call for 7-minute lightning talks, to be held on September 15. Application deadline is Sunday, August 15.
There are also three workshops of up to 15 participants, currently accepting applications until August 15. Topics include designing the future of open education policy based on know-how and good practices; new concepts & perspectives for the study on copyright for education; and Open Education for Green & Climate Education.

Do you use H5P in your courses? Would you benefit from seamless integration of H5P results into Moodle’s Gradebook? Pressbooks is piloting a program for course instructors interested in using H5P for assessment within courses. REAP ("Results Early Adopters Program"), is a service where student attempts on H5P activities within various chapters of a Pressbooks book are automatically sent to your LMS gradebook. This award is presented every year to an academic library team or individual who has made a real difference to students, faculty or colleagues in British Columbia.
Launched in March 2019, OPUS<https://www.kpu.ca/library/OPUS> - a suite of Library services and tools - was created to support faculty at various stages in producing their Open Education Resources. This support has helped foster the creation of over 20 Open textbooks as well as several journals and the inclusion of a variety of faculty authored materials in KPU’s institutional repository.
In addition to one-on-one consultations, the Team has also created several guides and workshops for faculty and students related to various aspects of Open Access and publishing, as well as sharing their knowledge with libraries at other institutions wanting to create their own Open publishing program.

Open educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions. The creation, adaptation, and adoption of OER supports equitable access to education.
Open pedagogy may be understood as an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education. An increasingly popular form of open pedagogy involves the design and use of renewable assignments.
Renewable assignments (also known as non-disposable assignments)those that add value to a student's world, live outside of the boundaries and beyond the duration of the course, and are likely to have a lasting impact. Disposable assignments, on the other hand, are those that only the instructor and students will see and which students are likely to throw away once they have been graded (Seraphin et al., 2019<https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1475725718811711>; Wiley, 2013 <https://opencontent.org/blog/archives/2975> ).

Limited Registration | Open Education Research Institute (OERI)
Dates: Monday, May 3 | Wednesday, May 5 | Friday, May 7
Time: 9am – 12pm (PST)
Program Description: As open education initiatives mature, it is imperative to investigate their impacts whether it be to advocate for institutional support or to iterate, innovate and further advance the goal of equitable access. For this reason, open education research is becoming an important facet within a healthy and thriving open ecosystem. This three-day Open Education Research Institute (OERI) provides an opportunity for new and emerging researchers interested in open educational practices to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skillset while connecting with other researchers and joining a Provincial mentorship network.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will
* receive an overview of existing research on open educational practices, including a special focus on research conducted in or by researchers in British Columbia.
* learn about different theoretical and methodological frameworks for research in open education
* receive guidance on practical issues such as preparing applications for ethical review of their research projects and publishing their work in open access journals or repositories
* work in affinity groups to draft and revise their research questions and be paired with an experienced researcher, who will serve as their mentor for the following year.
The OERI is jointly funded by KPU's Office of Open Education and BCcampus. While there will be no cost to register for the event, registration is required for planning and logistics.
To maintain a fruitful experience for participants, registration is limited.

Congratulations to Jeannette Paschen (School of Business) on receiving an OER Adaptation Grant to create a test-bank of questions using open pedagogy principles for Fundamentals of Business in Canada.<https://ecampusontario.pressbooks.pub/businessfuncdn/> These ancillary resources will surely aid in the adoption of this open textbook. At KPU alone this project has the potential to benefit over 1500 student per year in BUSI 1110. In 2019, 43 sections of BUSI 1110 were offered with up to 35 students in each section.

Program Description: As open education initiatives mature, it is imperative to investigate their impacts whether it be to advocate for institutional support or to iterate, innovate and further advance the goal of equitable access. For this reason, open education research is becoming an important facet within a healthy and thriving open ecosystem. This three-day Open Education Research Institute (OERI) provides an opportunity for new and emerging researchers interested in open educational practices to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skillset while connecting with other researchers and joining a Provincial mentorship network.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will
* receive an overview of existing research on open educational practices, including a special focus on research conducted in or by researchers in British Columbia.
* learn about different theoretical and methodological frameworks for research in open education
* receive guidance on practical issues such as preparing applications for ethical review of their research projects and publishing their work in open access journals or repositories
* work in affinity groups to draft and revise their research questions and be paired with an experienced researcher, who will serve as their mentor for the following year.
The OERI is jointly funded by KPU's Office of Open Education and BCcampus. While there will be no cost to register for the event, registration is required for planning and logistics.
To maintain a fruitful experience for participants, registration is limited. To cultivate a research community here is BC, priority will be given to registrants at BC institutions.

Open Education Week is fast approaching! To celebrate, BCcampus is hosting an Open Education Challenge Series<https://oechallenge.opened.ca/about-the-open-education-challenge-series/> for educators interested in learning more about open education practices (OEP). From March 1 to March 5, we will release two challenges a day. A challenge is a micro activity that you can do in 10 minutes or less that will introduce a small aspect of open education.
Everyone is welcome to participate, but the challenges are designed for educators who are new to open education. Topics to explore include open licences, open textbooks, and perhaps even open pedagogy! This isn’t a bootcamp or crash course in open education: it’s more of a tasting buffet of appetizers, designed to allow even the most time-constrained educators to participate.
Please share this event with your departments and networks, especially those who are new to open education. Invite your colleagues to participate with you! In planning and policy, a wicked problem is one that is difficult or impossible to solve due to incomplete, contradictory, interconnected, and/or changing factors. A problem that requires a major change in practice, belief, or behaviour for many people is often a wicked problem. Drawing on this idea, we turn our attention to the wicked problem in higher education of empowering students in the classroom, and centre student voices in exploring the challenges and potential solutions for tackling this problem.

This session will cover how to integrate asynchronous video instruction on the respectful use of Indigenous information with the Indigenous Information Literacy video playlist, add special topic support through the Indigenous Studies guide for areas such as Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous literature, and more. There will be ample time for discussion to help generate ideas for optimal classroom use.

Request for Proposals: COVID-19, Online Instruction, and Open Educational Resources
KULA: Knowledge Creation, Dissemination, and Preservation Studies is requesting proposals for a forum on the shift to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. We seek commentaries and teaching reflections (especially contributions that openly share syllabi and teaching materials with the broader community) from faculty members, librarians, and other staff working at post-secondary institutions who have transitioned to and developed pedagogical materials, especially Open Educational Resources (OERs), for online instruction in the last year. How has your teaching evolved? What are the demands and challenges of the digital environment? What has worked, and what has not? How have students responded?
As a multidisciplinary journal, we encourage submissions from scholars and practitioners across disciplines, and we are interested in experiences with both synchronous and asynchronous teaching. We also welcome submissions with student collaborators.

Educational Leave Recipient
The Office of Open Education would like to extend its congratulations to Pamela Ip (School of Business) on receiving an Educational Leave to create an open educational resource (OER) and ancillary resources for MRKT 1199: Introduction to Marketing. This project is estimated to save KPU business students roughly $300,000 a year. Pamela’s project is the first step toward establishing an open online course in Marketing in the hope of further reducing barriers.
About Open Educational Resources (OER) Grants
The Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant program provides funding and staff support to regular KPU faculty members interested in creating, adapting, and adopting OER. Faculty can apply for up to $4000 in funding to create OER or up to $2000 to adapt existing OER! The application deadline for OER Creation and Adaption grant for Summer 2021 is May 1. Workshop: Introduction to Open Pedagogy
In this workshop, participants will learn the "who", "what", and "why" of Open Pedagogy (OP) and then have an opportunity to explore OP options and ideas that may work in their teaching environments. Break-out groups and spontaneous brainstorming will help direct the workshop activities. Participants should come somewhat prepared with an idea of a course they'd like to infuse with new pedagogical practices that better centre student discovery, expression, and experiences.

Open Pedagogy is an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education. It is also a process of designing architectures and using tools for learning that enable students to shape the public knowledge commons of which they are a part.
Open pedagogy can include creating, adapting, or updating OER with students, building course policies, outcomes, assignments, rubrics, and schedules of work collaboratively with students, or facilitating student-created and student-controlled learning environments.

Regular faculty can apply for up to $4000 in funding to create OER or up to $2000 to adapt existing OER!
In Spring 2020, Statistics Canada collected data from over 100,000 postsecondary students reporting on the impacts of COVID-19<https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/11-627-m/11-627-m2020032-eng.htm>. Forty-eight percent of students with a job reported either losing their job or being temporarily laid off. Results from a 2017 study<http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/3012/4206> of BC postsecondary institutions, including KPU, showed that 54% students did not purchase a required textbook at least once. Study after study, including at KPU<https://doi.org/10.5206/cjsotl-rcacea.2018.1.5>, has also shown that students have achieved the same or better outcomes when using OER.
Join over 400 of your colleagues who actively engage with open education by saving students money and increasing accessibility to educational resources. Participating in the OER Grant program can enrich student learning and provide an opportunity to explore your pedagogical practice in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Adapt OER by:
* Updating or localizing existing textbooks <https://libguides.kpu.ca/opentextbooks>
* Incorporating interactive components through H5P applications<https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications>

Since moving to remote delivery many instructors have had to make changes in how they deliver class content and make their materials available to students. Moving resources online, posting materials to Moodle or elsewhere on the internet brings up copyright considerations.

Authors speak to their Open Pedagogy Approaches: Faculty, Library, and Student Collaborations
Today we are at a pivotal moment in history. The Covid-19 crisis has resulted in a paradigm shift on how learners of all ages, worldwide, can access learning. It is therefore more than ever essential that the global community comes together now to foster universal access to information and knowledge through [open educational resources].

It is under this context that the fortuitously-timed release of Open Pedagogy Approaches: Faculty, Library, and Student Collaborations<https://milnepublishing.geneseo.edu/openpedagogyapproaches/> offers prime examples to educators to adjust their approach to teaching and the ways in which they involve their students in the learning process. Open Pedagogy Approaches is an open collection of case studies that highlight various interpretations of what open educational practices can mean to you and your students. While not exclusive to pandemic pedagogy or online learning, a move toward open practices seems a natural fit for the COVID age where universal access to information is essential.
The author series of workshops (https://tinyurl.com/OP-author-series) will represent models from the four main sections of the book, providing educators with a taste of what's possible in their classrooms (whether physical, virtual, or hybrid) and a suggested roadmap to get there. All materials shared within the chapters are openly licensed meaning that they are free to use, revise, and remix to fit the specifics of your course design.
Each 60-minute workshop will be broken into two presentations under one main topical focus, expanding the ideas that audience members can consider.

In any copyright analysis, the first question has to be "what is the purpose of your use?" Thus, this series of focus groups seeks to document the pedagogical, social, and emotional purposes for including third party materials in OER. These focus groups are currently focused on fair use in the United States and fair dealing in Canada - so we encourage participants in both of those jurisdictions to participate.

OE Global 2020 will be held virtually between November 16-20 with a variety of engagement opportunities including synchronous, asynchronous, and social session formats.

Results from a 2017 study<http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/3012/4206> of BC postsecondary institutions, including KPU, showed that 54% students did not purchase a required textbook at least once. Study after study, including at KPU<https://doi.org/10.5206/cjsotl-rcacea.2018.1.5>, has also shown that students have achieved the same or better outcomes when using OER.

Participating in the OER Grant program can enrich student learning and provide an opportunity to explore your pedagogical practice in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Adapt OER by:

The Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg> brings together key stakeholders from across the institution to provide advice and support for KPU’s open education initiatives, which include the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources, the development of Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) programs, and the embrace of innovative open pedagogies. The OEWG meets once a semester when it adjudicates KPU’s OER Grant program<https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants>, but conducts most of its activities asynchronously in between those meetings.
As the terms of two of our current faculty representatives is soon coming to an end, this is a call for expressions of interest from faculty who would like to join this dynamic group for a two-year term. I am delighted to announce that Urooj Nizami will soon be joining the KPU community, as our new Open Education Strategist. Urooj comes to us from Temple University in Philadelphia, where she lead the institution’s Textbook Affordability Project<https://library.temple.edu/categories/textbook-affordability-project> in her role as resident librarian. Urooj brings a strong commitment to social justice and inclusion in all of her work and recently presented at the Open Education Global Conference on her work on Open Pedagogy through Community-Directed, Student-Led Partnerships<https://openpraxis.org/~openprax/index.php/OpenPraxis/article/view/1028/643>. Urooj is excited to return home to Canada and discover a new coast with the guidance of her soon-to-be colleagues.

A Zero Textbook Cost pathway to an Associate of Science degree<https://bccampus.ca/projects/open-education/pathway-to-associate-of-science…> is now available, based on existing OER that align with core requirements for Associate of Science programs in B.C. This pathway is designed such that a student could feasibly complete an Associate of Science degree without spending any money on textbooks, as they would only use OER and other free resources.
In addition, BCcampus is awarding a grant to Thompson Rivers University so that they may develop their own institution-specific pathway. BCcampus has recently opened two different calls for proposals that are both closing in July:
The first call for proposals is for the Identification, Evaluation, and Development of Open Online Courses and Open Education Resources<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/call-for-proposals-identific…> in Business Management, Math, Introduction to University Writing, Psychology, and Business Communications, and closes on July 15, 2020. Proposals will be reviewed as they are received, rather than once the call closes, as the deliverables deadline is August 15.
From the call: "This call for proposals is to identify qualified institutions, departments, or individual educators to work with BCcampus on the identification, evaluation, and development of open online courses (OOCs) and other OERs." Up to $10,000 will be awarded for the development of each course. Teams of applicants must include B.C. educators. For more information about the call and how to apply for funding, see the link to the call.
The second is the call for proposals for the Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) Grant for Marketing Programs<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/zero-textbook-cost-ztc-grant…>, which closes July 24, 2020.
From the call: "BCcampus will award one grant (maximum $60,000) to a B.C. institution committed to the development of a Zero Cost Textbook (ZTC) Program (Diploma or Degree) in Marketing."
