Dear colleagues,
If you would like to adapt an open textbook (e.g., to localize/contextualize it) or create some openly-licensed content (e.g., modules, videos, question banks, etc.) to support your classes, please consider applying for an OER grant. The application form is brief and the turnaround time for a decision rapid. With this grant you can quickly get up to $2000 to support your project, which you could use for ~125 hours of student assistant support. For more information please visit: http://www.kpu.ca/open/grants
Questions about this grant or the application process? Please send an email to open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca>
Cheers,
Rajiv

Hello everyone,
Beyond adopting open educational resources such as open textbooks , a growing number of our colleagues at KPU have been experimenting with open educational practices. If you are curious about what this involves, Educause has helpfully published the following 2-page primer as part of their ELI series “7 things you should know about…” https://library.educause.edu/resources/2018/7/7-things-you-should-know-abou… (bonus: KPU gets a brief mention)
For those of you interested in exploring this approach to teaching and learning, please watch for an invitation next month to join a Faculty Learning Community this Fall on open pedagogy.
Cheers,
Rajiv
Hello everyone,
A quick update: The Fall 2018 course timetable launched this morning and, thanks to support of our wonderful colleagues in the Registrar’s office, it now includes a new field that makes it possible for students to identify course sections that have zero required textbook costs and qualify for the Zed Cred. To see how this works visit: https://twitter.com/KPUopen/status/1010284480022507520
The growth in the Zed Cred initiative has been tremendous, as we have gone from 80 sections this Spring to over 300 sections this Fall. These sections represent 191 courses from 36 departments and 5 Faculties.
A massive THANK YOU to the many of you who are supporting or involved in this initiative.
Warm regards and have a wonderful weekend,
Rajiv
Dear Faculty and Staff,
BCcampus Open Education is reaching out to all faculty members and staff involved in the teaching and support of anatomy and healthcare post-secondary curricula in B.C. in response to a request from the [ http://www.oeconsortium.org/ | Open Education Consortium ] to identify individuals interested in collaborating on a project that would involve the co-creation of an open anatomical atlas of anatomy images.
Background
Anatomy is a basic discipline for all medical and paramedical fields around the world. Anatomical illustrations are essential for the teaching and learning of anatomy and are universally relevant in all countries. Good quality artist-created anatomical drawings are available in anatomical atlases and textbooks but are mostly copyrighted. There are very few good quality anatomical images available under an open license.
If you think this is a good idea and want to participate in the creation and implementation of an open anatomical atlas, please respond to this email by July 15. A response to this email does not commit you to anything, it merely indicates an interest in this project.
On behalf of all interested parties that reply to this email, and as a member of the Open Education Consortium, BCcampus Open Education will submit a form expressing interest.
Regards,
The BCcampus OpenEd team

Hello Everyone,
We have just published the date (July 11) for the next [ https://open.bccampus.ca/pressbooks-training-webinar/ | Pressbooks Training webinars ] .
This time, in addition to our Introduction session, we will also be offering an Intermediate 1 session focusing on how to import certain files into Pressbooks and exporting a variety of file types. For faculty and staff who do not have experience using Pressbooks, it is strongly recommended that they take the Introduction webinar before the Intermediate. These two webinars are conveniently scheduled so they can be taken on the same day.

Dear colleagues,
The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills, & Training has just announced funding to support OER development for Adult Basic Education. This is very exciting news for us at KPU, especially for our colleagues in the Faculty of Academic & Career Advancement, many of whom are already active users of open textbooks. This funding provides more support to adapt and create new OER where necessary.
From the press release:
“The Province is providing BCcampus, which produces open education online content, with $250,000 to create or adapt textbooks for all courses in all levels of the British Columbia adult graduation diploma (or adult dogwood diploma). Courses covered include math, English, science, social science, computer studies, and education and career planning.”

Good afternoon everyone,
I am happy to end this celebratory week with some more happy news. BCcampus recently announced the recipients of their latest round of open education grants. Among the 9 successful proposals they funded were two proposals from KPU. The first is an OER Create grant to help support the development of an Ancient and Medieval History open textbook (a project led by Tracey Kinney) while the second is an OER Sustainability grant that will help us develop a specialized service in the Library to support OER creation. This round involved the largest number of grant submissions to BCcampus to date so it is nice to see our leadership in this space being recognized with external support.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
Cheers,
Rajiv
Hello everyone,
I am delighted to share news of the publication of a new open textbook by Christina Page and her colleagues from the Learning Centres titled “University 101: Study, Strategize, and Succeed,” available at https://pressbooks.bccampus.ca/studystrategizesucceed/
A recipient of an OER grant, Christina and her team (which includes Graeme Robinson-Clogg, Rawia Inaim, and Vijaya Jammi, along with student assistant Anmol Mangat) have also developed 25 learning strategies videos (https://bit.ly/2IMhpvp) and soft launched two interactive Online Academic Skills Workshops (Reading Texts and Time Management for Busy Students) (http://www.kpu.ca/asw-online)
Together, these resources eliminate the need to purchase commercial learning strategies texts (e.g., in the Learning Centre, for Orientation programming), enhance student access to Academic Skills development opportunities, and increase opportunities for instructors to integrate learning strategies into their courses.
Please join me in congratulating Christina and her team.
Cheers,
Rajiv
Hello everyone,
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful long weekend!
Some of you have been following the moves of commercial textbook publishers into Open Education. Although many are justifiably skeptical about these moves, I and other open education advocates have been meeting with some of them to explain what it means to be a good actor in Open Education (e.g., providing and not just reusing content, making editable files available, hosting OER on a platform that does not require registration, etc.). One of the groups I have recently discussed these issues with is Cengage. I am delighted to share the news that they have followed our advice and have today released three of their (current) textbooks under an open license. These three books are relevant to a few of our programs at KPU so I am sharing them on this listserv. They are:
English Composition 1: https://www.oercommons.org/authoring/28908-cengage-opennow-english-composit…
Developmental English: https://www.oercommons.org/authoring/28906-cengage-opennow-developmental-en…
College Success: https://www.oercommons.org/authoring/28784-cengage-opennow-college-success-…
You can download these books in their entirety in both PDF and MS Word formats, edit them as you see fit, and reuse them in whole or in part. They each now carry a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) license.
Cheers,
Rajiv

Hello Everyone,
See the below opportunity for all Canadian post-secondary faculty.
Open Choice invites Canadian faculty to review OER for their upcoming database
Choice, a publishing unit at the Association of College and Research Libraries, plans to release a new online database of open educational resource (OER) reviews called Open Choice. The new service will feature a significant collection of critical reviews of OER targeted to teaching faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and university staff charged with acquiring digital tools for instruction (IT, instructional technologies, etc.).
We are looking for active teaching faculty who be interested in reviewing open educational materials for Open Choice. The reviews are more substantive, averaging 2,000-2,500 words, and use a structured review rubric. The rubric provides consistency in reviews and makes them easier to write. All reviews go through a formal copyediting process. We are able to provide a honorarium of $200 for each review.
If you are interested in reviewing, or have questions about Open Choice or the reviewing process, please email Melissa Karp at [ mailto:mkarp@ala-choice.org | mkarp(a)ala-choice.org ] .

Hello everyone,
BCcampus has put out a new call for grant applications related to the development of open textbooks and other open educational resources (OER). This includes one grant fund to support the curation, adaptation, or creation of OER and another grant fund to support the creation of ancillary resources (e.g., question banks, slide decks, multimedia content, etc.) that support existing OER.
The application deadline is coming up quick, in just over two weeks. More details (including eligible subject areas) are available on these two web pages:
https://open.bccampus.ca/open-educational-resource-grant-curate-customize-c…https://open.bccampus.ca/ancillary-resource-grant/
If you think you have a project in mind that might be a candidate for either of these two grants please let me know ASAP. I can then work with you to determine the next steps, including potentially applying for one of these two grants. As a reminder, we also currently have OER and Zed Cred grants available at KPU. For more information about OER grants visit http://www.kpu.ca/open/grants
Thank you,

Great news! Pressbooks has been making changes to the interface and functionality based on your feedback. The major release for the BCcampus Open Education Pressbooks instances is scheduled for later this month. Here’s a heads up of the changes that are on the way.
Most of the improvements are under the hood. However, there are a few big changes we would like to call to your attention.
First, a new look and feel is available for the network home page and catalog. The new standalone catalog page is sortable and filterable, for improved discovery.
Pressbooks has also given the webbook a much-needed makeover, with some added functionality. A wider book layout, better scrolling and navigation are just some of the enhancements. We have also updated the Open Textbook theme at BCcampus. A big thanks to Ryerson University for supporting the development of these changes.
The Luther theme will be retiring on the same day as the new release. In their place, Pressbooks is releasing two new themes, McLuhan and Jacobs. These two themes both offer expanded theme options, and both are designed with textbooks in mind. Their development has been generously funded by [ https://www.ecampusontario.ca/ | eCampus Ontario ] . We will be continuing to use the Open Textbooks as our default theme and the theme for the BCcampus open textbook collection.
We are thoroughly testing the updated Pressbooks prior to the release and these improvements should not cause any issues with your existing books. But, if anything does come up, let us know right away at [ mailto:helpdesk@bccampus.ca | helpdesk(a)bccampus.ca ]
Other changes include:
*
Save Button: Pressbooks heard your pleas for a clearer way to save your chapters. It’s here! (In the past, the “save” button was named Update, Publish, or other variations based on the status of your post.) Note that when you create a new chapter, front or back matter section, you will first see a “Create” button, but subsequent changes can be saved by clicking on the new “Save” button.
*
Contributor Management: Pressbooks added a centralized contributor management tool where you can add contributors who can then be reused throughout your book as authors, editors, translators, reviewers, illustrators, and generic contributors.
*
Organize Page Improvements: Pressbooks revamped the Organize page, improving the display on mobile devices, and improving accessibility for keyboard navigation and screen reader users.
*
Chapter Importing: Now, you can import individual chapters from public, openly licensed Pressbooks webbooks using the Import tool. All you need to drop is drop in the URL to a book, begin the import process, then select the chapters you wish to add to your book. (Content that is private, All Rights Reserved or that carries any of the Creative Commons Non-Derivative licenses cannot be imported.)
*
Content Visibility: Pressbooks has made it more intuitive to manage the visibility of your content across web and exports. Now you can simply designate content visibility in web and exports on both the Organize page and the edit screen for individual front matter, chapters and back matter.
*
Import Files from URL: You can now import supported file formats hosted on remote (web based) sources via URL. If you have files hosted elsewhere (with the right permissions), you no longer need to download and upload files, but can import them directly with just the URL.
*
Ebook Start Point: Pressbooks has moved the ebook start point setting to the ebook Theme Options page to ensure that only one front matter, chapter, or back matter can be set as the ebook start point. (Note that Pressbooks tries to enforce the ebook start point you select. However, ereader devices may still override the start point you designate.)
*
Language Support Changes: Pressbooks has renamed the Language Support section in Theme Options to Language & Script Support to better reflect its functionality; we’ve also re-labelled Hindi support to Devanagari, to clarify that the Devanagari script supports Hindi, Sanskrit, and over 120 other languages.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions or problems navigating the new features. You can contact us at [ mailto:helpdesk@bccampus.ca | helpdesk(a)bccampus.ca ]

For those of you that would like to see what is happening at other institutions, here is a UBC Open snapshot.
Here's a few stats as a teaser ....
Since 2011, at least 155 UBC courses have been identified as having used open textbooks, OERs, or freely accessible resources instead of traditional textbooks. And if we look across those past six years, 47,423 UBC students were enrolled in those courses using open resources.
The estimated cost savings for students has also increased over the past few years. The replacement of traditional textbooks with open resources has potentially saved UBC students between $4.7 to $6.7 million since 2011

***message sent on behalf of Rajiv - please reply to Open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:Open@kpu.ca>
Dear colleagues,
Happy new Year! I am currently working to build a comprehensive list of courses with zero required textbook costs so that they can be identified for students when the course timetable for each semester goes live (approximately two weeks before course registration begins). For now, the zero textbook cost notation is added manually and requires a bit of coordination behind the scenes. To help expedite this process and fill gaps in this list concerning your courses, I have created a very brief (4 question) data gathering form. If this is relevant to you, I would be grateful if you could complete this form by January 15 (it shouldn't take you more than 3-4 minutes). You can access the webform by clicking on this link: https://goo.gl/forms/YEUQIoUJ0J9PcEF12
I should add that I realize changes may occur in your teaching schedule and selection of course resources between the time you complete this form and the start of your next teaching semester. Given that we do not want to provide students with inaccurate information about courses and sections with zero required textbook costs, I only ask that you make a note to inform me if any of the information you have supplied me with changes (I will also send you a confirmation email before the timetable goes live).
Finally, please note that if are interested in adopting open educational resources (OER), support is available to you to help you discover relevant OER (e.g., from https://open.bccampus.ca/ or http://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/) modify/contextualize OER (see http://www.kpu.ca/teaching-and-learning/open-education/grants) and order print copies of open textbooks for your students. Feel free to send an email to open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca> if you have questions about any of this.
Thank you very much for your assistance with gathering this information. Please note that although I am on vacation until the end of January, my student assistant is helping to compile the information from the form responses during my absence.

Hello!
(Apologies for the cross-posting)
The team at Babson Survey Research Group is out today with a report on the use of OER in higher education. The study is based on responses of over 2,700 faculty and there are a number of helpful findings. Inside Higher Ed also published a very positive piece about the findings here: [ https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2017/12/19/more-faculty-members-are-usi… | https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2017/12/19/more-faculty-members-are-usi… ] . And The Chronicle of Higher Education published a story on the findings: [ https://www.chronicle.com/article/Use-of-Free-Textbooks-Is/242086 | https://www.chronicle.com/article/Use-of-Free-Textbooks-Is/242086 ]
Key Findings Include:
* Faculty awareness of OER has increased, with 29 percent of faculty reporting that they were “Aware” or “Very Aware” of open educational resources, up from 25 percent last year and 20 percent the year before.
* Graphic #1: Increase Awareness
*
Large enrollment introductory undergraduate courses have adopted openly licensed OpenStax College textbooks at a rate (16.5 percent) equivalent to that of commercial publication adoption.
* Graphic #2: OER & Traditional Textbooks
*
A majority of faculty classify cost as "Very important" for their selection of required course materials. * OER can be as successful as commercial alternatives.
* Faculty report equal levels of satisfaction with OER OpenStax materials and traditional textbooks.
Thanks!
Amanda

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 1, 2017
KPU unveils sweet suite of courses with no-cost textbooks
Metro Vancouver, B.C. – Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) are about to save thousands of dollars on their education, thanks to dozens of courses that don’t require expensive, commercial textbooks.
Launched Nov. 1, the courses are part of KPU’s Zed Cred program, which is the first of its kind in Canada. The "Z" in Zed Cred refers to zero textbook costs and the “Cred” refers to an entire degree program, in this case KPU’s certificate of arts credential.
“Even a single textbook can cost well over $100, which means a student can spend thousands of dollars on textbooks on top of the cost of tuition during their post-secondary career,” said Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani, a university teaching fellow in open studies and psychology instructor.
KPU has launched close to 50 courses in the Faculty of Arts that use either free open textbooks or free library materials that are available online.
Third-year KPU psychology student Bethany Borkowski is already planning to take three Zed Cred courses in counselling psychology, sociology, and journalism. Borkowski estimates she’s spent about $700 on textbooks to date, despite buying mostly old and used editions.
“The high cost of textbooks limits university learning to those who have accessibility and the financial resources available to cover additional costs,” says Borkowski. “I know many people who do not buy textbooks because of the cost, and they miss out on valuable information for a course.”
In fact, Jhangiani recently published his research showing that 54 per cent of BC post-secondary students do not purchase at least one of their required course textbooks because of cost.
The introduction of Zed Cred means Borkowski will no longer have to guess what page an instructor is referring to due to differences in their respective textbook editions, she’ll have access to her materials anywhere, and she won’t have to carry any heavy tomes around with her.
Borkowski says open educational resources also make courses much more engaging.
“Instead of just reading from a textbook, we had access to more resources online through hyperlinks in the text and suggested readings from the instructor.”
KPU’s Zed Cred was made possible thanks to a $35,000 grant from BCcampus to adopt and adapt pre-existing free online open education resources as well as create new ones.
KPU also received an Open Education Resource Grant, which matches BCcampus funding with KPU funding for creating new open textbooks, redesigning existing resources, and providing workshops, training and other support services.
KPU is already the leading institutional adopter of open textbooks in B.C.
“KPU is a proudly open access university,” notes Dr. Diane Purvey, dean of the Faculty of Arts. “Zed Cred is in complete alignment with our mission to create pathways to enable all learners to become successful.”

MATH - Calculus
Made in British Columbia
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=c8c2b69f-5ff7-4b6d-a35a-… | Differential Calculus for the Life Sciences ] , by UBC Math professor Leah Edelstein-Keshet, is a high quality textbook designed with life sciences majors in mind. O ften calculus is taught as a technical subject with rules and formulas devoid of its connection to applications. In this textbook, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates.
A two-volume set for an introductory calculus course has also been added, written by faculty authors at the Grand Valley State University in Michigan
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=a78cdfc6-b5b6-45cb-9045-… | Active Calculus, 2017 edition ] can be used as a stand-alone textbook for a standard first semester college calculus course or as a supplement to a more traditional text. WeBWork files for a workbook and computer lab activities are available to instructors.
* In [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=3dcfe755-6534-4877-9c97-… | Active Calculus Multivariable ] the authors endeavor to actively engage students in learning the subject through an activity-driven approach in which the vast majority of the examples are completed by students.
PSYCHOLOGY
>From NOBA, we've added [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=0100da6c-9753-42cf-a1f3-… | Together: The Science of Social Psychology ] in which several modules investigate the ways other people affect our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
SPANISH
Two new textbooks on Spanish literature (and written in Spanish) are now available.
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=17e2b614-b203-4491-8f39-… | Antologia Abierta de Literatura Hispana ] is a critical anthology of literary texts from the Spanish-speaking world. The focus is on canonical authors with an attempt to include voices that have been marginalized. Julie Ward, assistant professor of 20th and 21st-century Latin American literature at the University of Oklahoma, is the editor.
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=0613e2b4-5a51-4aec-8927-… | Leyendas y arquetipos del Romanticismo español, Segunda edición ] i s an introduction to nineteenth-century Spanish literature with a thematic focus on legends and archetypes. This textbook is by Robert Sanders, from Portland State University, who specializes in nineteenth and twentieth-century peninsular Spanish literature.
WEB LITERACY
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=ccbb4e77-b20f-4dec-8a9f-… | Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers ] by Michael Caulfield, from Washington State University in Vancouver, WA, "will show you how to use date filters to find the source of viral content, how to assess the reputation of a scientific journal in less than five seconds, and how to see if a tweet is really from the famous person you think it is or from an impostor", amongst other skills.
Textbook Updates
Made in British Columbia
PDF files and print-on-demand copies are now available for the two textbook set: [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=4356bb1a-a2d9-4a3c-989e-… | Greek and Latin Roots: Part I - Latin ] and [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=659957b9-b344-4f30-9f74-… | Greek and Latin Roots: Part II - Greek ] . This series examines the systematic principles by which a large portion of English vocabulary has evolved from Latin and (to a lesser degree) from Greek. These open textbooks, by the late Peter Smith, were produced by the University of Victoria and funded, in part, from a BCcampus OER Grant.
Canadian (Alberta)
[ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=c6d0e9bd-ba6b-4548-82d6-… | Creative Clinical Teaching in the Health Professions ] has been updated with files for its 2016 edition. Hi all,
This is a friendly invitation to stop by the Surrey Campus Library on Sept 18 (between 11-3) to join in on our Science Literacy Week BC Wikipedia edit-a-thon. No experience necessary. We have partnered with several other BC post-secondary libraries, and have received generous support from BCcampus.
For more details, please see http://libguides.kpu.ca/scilitweek/Wikipedia
We would especially like to welcome those faculty curious about the possibilities of incorporating Wikipedia writing/editing into their classroom activities and assignments. Learning how to write content and edit Wikipedia provides students with practical experience in critically evaluating information, assessing authority in context, and exploring issues around copyright and open access.
The edit-a-thon will be a preliminary chance to get familiar with the editing interface and some of the basic Wikipedia writing guidelines of verifiability and neutrality. Along with the Teaching and Learning Commons, we are in the early planning stages of hosting a second, more targeted workshop to support faculty, later this semester. Stay tuned for details!
Any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Dear colleagues,
Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) are supportive and ongoing discussion groups that allow KPU colleagues to gather from across departments in order to discuss and develop their skills around a specific teaching and learning topic. This Fall we will launch an FLC that will focus on open educational practices, with a special emphasis on open pedagogy<https://press.rebus.community/makingopentextbookswithstudents/chapter/open-…>. Open Pedagogy is both an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education as well as a process of designing architectures and using tools for learning that enable students to shape the public knowledge commons of which they are a part.
Members of this FLC will meet monthly, between October 2017 and April 2018, and will critically explore and workshop innovative open educational practices and how these might be implemented in one or more of their own courses. This FLC is limited to 10 participants and will be facilitated by Rajiv Jhangiani (Psychology). Faculty interested in joining this FLC or learning more about this opportunity should send an email to open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca> by September 15.
Please feel free to share this call with colleagues who may not be on the Open KPU listserve.
Many thanks,
Rajiv

Subject: [Bcoelsteering] FW: Join the Wikiedithon for Science Literacy Week Sept.18 -24?
Dear Colleagues,
As you may know, National Science Literacy Week<http://scienceliteracy.ca/about/> is Sept 18-24, 2017. Libraries, museums, schools and community science groups will be celebrating Canadian science and scientists through a number of events. One of the events to start things off will be libraries at BCIT, Douglas College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia and perhaps others…. will be hosting Wikipedia edit-a-thons starting on September 18th.
A Wikipedia edit-a-thon is an event where new and experienced writers and editors come together to make edits, add citations and create new content in Wikipedia. Wikipedia is everywhere. Google searches bring up Wikipedia articles often as the first result; and Wikipedia is a reference source frequently used by students and the public. Learning about how to edit and add content to Wikipedia provides many relevant learning experiences for students, staff and researchers covering areas as varied as open access, scholarly communication, copyright, construction of information, evaluation and situating information in context, wikis, peer-review, and more. Wikipedia edit-a-thons offer a practical, hands-on experience of writing and collaborating on research. It is also a way to engage faculty in thinking about the potential value of Wikipedia for creating learning activities in their courses.
Last year, BCIT Library, SFU Library & UBC Library partnered on a Wikipedia edit-athon for Science Literacy Week. Our theme was local women and science. Here was our meetup page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Vancouver/LocalWomeninScienc… and a research guide we created to advertise the event: http://guides.library.ubc.ca/scilit16/wiki It was a fun event and we learned a few things.
This year our theme is more broadly Canadian science and scientists. We are also expanding the partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University Library, Douglas College Library, BCCampus and possibly others.
For more information and to read how you can participate, please see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/BC/SciLit17. Interested in learning more or holding an edit-a-thon at your campus? BCcampus will also be hosting an informational webinar with some of the organizers on August 28th. Join us from 10-11 am to learn more about the event and how to participate. We would like to extend a warm invitation to you and your library to join the event!
If no edit-a-thons are happening on your own campus, you’re more than welcome to join us at Woodward Library at UBC on September 18th for the edit-a-thon and I’m sure other institutions would feel the same. It could be a great opportunity to work with a faculty member and explore another campus.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you have any questions.
Kind regards,
Katherine

Hi All,
First, as a brief correction, the edit-athon has been a partnership with UBC Library, SFU, and BCIT for two years and mainly has been the brain child of Katherine Miller from Woodward Library - UBC with the help of myself and Will Engle from CTLT. The credit for planning really should fall with Katherine Miller and the other libraries involved. However, we are really thankful for the support from BCcampus this year.
As for the subject material, last year there was a focus on Canadian female scientists at your institution. I believe this year it is more broadly about Canadian scientific activity/invention/ or scientists generally. It is best to keep a broad theme so people will connect with an area of interest.
Best,
Erin

The idea would be that those who want to participate , there will be an opportunity to watch a webinar (although not necessarily needed) and they register for a wiki account. BCcampus will be providing pizza for each institution
This is the beginning of the planning and a dashboard has just gone up with some initial information https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/BC/Science_Literacy_Week_BC_E…
BCIT, KPU and SFU are also participating. Douglas is listed but I have as yet to solicit interest here. I want to participate personally so I will go to another institution’s Wikiedithon if one doesn’t pan out here.
Let us know if you would like to participate, either individually or institutionally. Katherine and Lucas are part of this listserv and I’ve added Will to this email as well in case you have any questions for them.

In case you did not click through the announcements to see the exciting news about KPU being awarded 2 new BCcampus grants, I've provided a link directly to the press release.
In short, KPU has received funding from BCcampus to develop our certificate in arts program to allow students to earn the credential without having to pay for textbooks. That's an estimated $1,000 savings per year per student! The materials for students will be freely available and fully editable so that other institutions can benefit from them as well.
In addition, KPU also received an Open Education Resource Grant, which matches BCcampus funding with KPU funding for creating new open textbooks, redesigning existing resources, and providing workshops, training and other support services.
Read the full release here - http://www.kpu.ca/news/2017/07/14/bccampus-%E2%80%98grants%E2%80%99-kpu-stu…
If you have questions, post it to this list and someone from the Open Working Group can get back to you.
Exciting times ahead!

Applications to attend OpenCon 2017 on November 11-13 in Berlin, Germany are now open! Most of those who are invited to attend will receive full or partial travel funding, if needed.
OpenCon brings together early career researchers, librarians, and students from around the world to connect and empower the next generation of leaders to open up research and education in their communities. Past conferences have featured presentations from established figures such as Jimmy Wales (cofounder of Wikipedia) and Julia Reda (member of the European Parliament) alongside those from early career leaders.
Apply to attend OpenCon at http://www.opencon2017.org/apply
The benefits of applying for OpenCon 2017 extend far beyond attending the Berlin event—those who apply will have the opportunity to get connected with new collaborators, learn about scholarships to attend related conferences, and actively participate in a larger community. Applications will remain open until August 1st. Attendance at OpenCon is by application only.
Students and early career academic professionals of all experience levels are encouraged to apply. OpenCon seeks to support those who have ideas for new projects and initiatives in addition to those who are already leading them. The most important criteria is an interest in advancing Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data and a commitment to taking action. Learn more about the types of projects OpenCon community members are working on and the impact they are having through the recently released OpenCon Community Report<http://www.opencon2017.org/community_report>.
OpenCon is also looking for partners to host satellite events—meetings that combine themes from the global conference with local presentations, workshops, and discussions to advance the conversation around Open in your local community. In 2016, there were 28 OpenCon satellite events in twenty countries—all thanks to our incredible hosts<http://www.opencon2017.org/satellite_hosts>, who included students, scientists, librarians, researchers, and advocates from around the world who are working hard to increase action around Open Access, Open Data, and Open Education. To express interest in hosting your own satellite event and get more information, visit http://www.opencon2017.org/satellite
The meeting in Berlin serves as the centerpiece of a much larger network to foster initiatives and collaboration among the next generation across OpenCon’s issue areas. OpenCon invites you to become an active part of the community by joining the discussion list, tuning in for monthly community calls and webcasts, or hosting an OpenCon satellite event in your community. Hello all
KPU is redesigning its website and I'm gathering feedback specifically for our library web page design - including how we can highlight open resources. I would like to hear from faculty (as well as students) so please consider taking 5 minutes to fill out our short survey at http://kpu.libsurveys.com/newlibrarywebpage .
I'm also looking for a few faculty to have a more in depth conversation with regarding your use of the library website. It would only take about 20 minutes and could be done over the phone. If you are interested, please hit reply to this message and we'll set up a time to talk.
I appreciate your feedback!

Call for Proposals Announced
With the support of both the Ministry of Advanced Education and the Hewlett Foundation, BCcampus will distribute the following grants in support of Open Education:
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/zed-credz-degree-grants/ | Zed Cred/Z-Degree ]
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/ancillary-materials-development-grant/ | Ancillary Resources ]
* [ https://open.bccampus.ca/open-educational-resource-grant/ | OER Grants ]
New this year
We are excited to announce the newest grant for this year- the Zed Cred/Z-Degree grant. A Zed Cred/Z-Degree is a set of courses in a specific program area that allows a student to earn a credential, such as an associate degree or certificate program, with zero textbook costs by way of using open educational resources and/or free library materials.
Successful Open Educational Resources Zed Cred/Z Degree implementations will empower faculty to lead the work, develop broad-based support across the institution for using open educational resources, and promote the benefits of enrolling in an open educational resources degree programs to students. The process of developing an open educational resources degree will build institutional capacity for designing clearer and more efficient pathways to credentials and better connecting student learning outcomes to curriculum and pedagogy.
BCcampus will distribute two grants (maximum $35,000.00) to BC Institutions committed to the development of a “Zed Cred” (Z Degree) Program. With the funds, Institutions will not only develop pathways to credential by adopting and adapting pre-existing OER, the funds may also be used to create new OER necessary for the program. The Institutions will also be required to package and publish their degree paths such that other Institutions from BC and beyond can borrow from their progress. Any learning materials created under the Zed Cred program will hold a [ https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/ | Creative Commons BY license ] and must be fully editable.
As this initiative is new to British Columbia, we welcome any questions you may have about the grant program, the outcomes, and expectations. Please feel free to connect with our Open Education Team at [ mailto:opentext@bccampus.ca | opentext(a)bccampus.ca ]
Ancillary Resources and OER Grants
In addition to the Zed Cred/Z-degree grants, we are distributing two other types of grants (Ancillary Resources and OER Grants). Changes have been made to the grants based on recommendations from last year.
The [ https://open.bccampus.ca/ancillary-materials-development-grant/ | ancillary resources call for proposals ] is to support inter-institutional initiatives to create ancillary support material for existing open textbooks in the [ http://open.bccampus.ca/ | BC Open Textbook Collection ] that could assist faculty in adopting the open textbook. This material can include:
* Testbanks of questions based on an existing open textbook.
* Presentations (PowerPoint, Open Office, Prezi, etc)
* Multimedia content, such as audio or video, that could further enhance the textbook.
* Simulations.
* Instructor and student manuals.
* Additional learning activities.
Ancillary Resource Development Proposals can not exceed $2,500.00 provided by BCcampus. A maximum of four Ancillary Resource Grants will be awarded.
The [ https://open.bccampus.ca/open-educational-resource-grant/ | OER Grants call for proposals ] is for institutions or their representatives (e.g. Articulation Committees, Teaching and Learning Centres, Libraries, OER Working Groups) in British Columbia and Yukon to provide small open educational resource grants, funded by BCcampus and matched by the institution. Open Educational Resource grants may be used for, but are not limited to:
* Adaptation of Open Textbooks/Open Educational Resources
* Creation of Open Textbooks/Open Educational Resources
* Course redesign using Open Textbooks/Open Educational Resources
* Workshops, training, and institutional support for OER infrastructure (e.g. Open Policy, Awareness, How to Adopt, How to Adapt, Pressbooks Support)
OER Grant Proposals can not exceed $10,000.00 provided by BCcampus. A maximum of four OER Grants will be awarded.
Should you have questions about the changes and/or the outcomes, expectations of these grants please fee free to connect with our Open Education Team at [ mailto:opentext@bccampus.ca | opentext(a)bccampus.ca ]
Thank you!

Here is some further info on open textbooks and math....
At UBC the graduate students in mathematics, several years ago, put together an open database of problem sets and answers in the UBC Wiki: http://wiki.ubc.ca/Science:Math_Exam_Resources
It's an amazing resource that has replaced most text content in courses. There is a full list of all the courses that currently are using this tool.
Additionally, there has been a lot of development in our Math department on developing open texts . The full list can be found here with linked examples (Look at: Appendix: Sample of Open Textbooks Used at UBC): http://open.ubc.ca/open-ubc-snapshots-textbook-displacements-by-open-resour…

Subject: Math textbook - care to participate?
Hello all
There was a BC Open Librarians teleconference yesterday and I thought I'd pass on something I heard there. It seems there are a few instructors at a couple of institutions that are working on math textbooks. Some of them are starting to connect and possibly work together on one. If you are interested, or know of anyone that is interested, you can give them my name and I'll set them up.

Good morning!
In an ongoing effort to sustain and build the [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/ | BC Open Textbook Collection ] , BCcampus asks for your help to identify subject areas within this collection that are missing open textbooks either entirely or in specific categories and/or course levels. As an overview, there are currently 180 textbooks in this collection covering eight main subject areas (Sciences, Trades, Business and Management, Liberal Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Upgrading Programs, Health Related, and Recreation, Tourism, Hospitality and Service). Within these eight areas are 36 secondary subject areas. For a summary of these subject areas and links to specific books, go to the [ https://open.bccampus.ca/open-textbook-stats/ | Open Textbook Stats ] page and click on the "Subjects" tab.
We ask that you please send us suggestions for subject areas that are missing open textbooks, those subject areas where you have heard from faculty "I would adopt an open textbook, but there isn't one in my subject area". Additionally, it would be helpful to have the following information for each identified subject area.
Textbook Subject
1. Subject
2. Course level
3. Specific topic with the subject (if applicable)
We will be reviewing these suggestions as we publish a new call for proposals in the coming months- proposals for creation, adaptation, adoption of open textbooks- preferably with a targeted approach based on the needs of the system.
Thank you for your time and attention to this request-

Dear colleagues,
Two articles were published today that I think will be of interest to you. The first appeared in University Affairs, and includes excerpts of interviews with Farhad and myself, along with several other leading open education advocates and practitioners across the country, including Gill Green, Amanda Coolidge, David Porter, and Paul Stacey: http://www.universityaffairs.ca/features/feature-article/open-educational-r…
And the second follows my recent trip to the University of Kansas and talks about the social movement that is behind open education: http://cteblog.ku.edu/turning-open-education-into-a-social-movement/
