New grants from BCcampus to support the curation, adaptation, or creation of OER and ancillary resources [time sensitive]

Hello everyone, BCcampus has put out a new call for grant applications related to the development of open textbooks and other open educational resources (OER). This includes one grant fund to support the curation, adaptation, or creation of OER and another grant fund to support the creation of ancillary resources (e.g., question banks, slide decks, multimedia content, etc.) that support existing OER. The application deadline is coming up quick, in just over two weeks. BCcampus Pressbooks Major Release Scheduled: March 15-16

Great news! Pressbooks has been making changes to the interface and functionality based on your feedback. The major release for the BCcampus Open Education Pressbooks instances is scheduled for later this month. Here’s a heads up of the changes that are on the way. Most of the improvements are under the hood. However, there are a few big changes we would like to call to your attention. First, a new look and feel is available for the network home page and catalog. The new standalone catalog page is sortable and filterable, for improved discovery. Pressbooks has also given the webbook a much-needed makeover, with some added functionality. A wider book layout, better scrolling and navigation are just some of the enhancements. We have also updated the Open Textbook theme at BCcampus. A big thanks to Ryerson University for supporting the development of these changes. The Luther theme will be retiring on the same day as the new release. In their place, Pressbooks is releasing two new themes, McLuhan and Jacobs. These two themes both offer expanded theme options, and both are designed with textbooks in mind. We will be continuing to use the Open Textbooks as our default theme and the theme for the BCcampus open textbook collection. We are thoroughly testing the updated Pressbooks prior to the release and these improvements should not cause any issues with your existing books. It’s here! (In the past, the “save” button was named Update, Publish, or other variations based on the status of your post.) Note that when you create a new chapter, front or back matter section, you will first see a “Create” button, but subsequent changes can be saved by clicking on the new “Save” button. * Contributor Management: Pressbooks added a centralized contributor management tool where you can add contributors who can then be reused throughout your book as authors, editors, translators, reviewers, illustrators, and generic contributors. * Organize Page Improvements: Pressbooks revamped the Organize page, improving the display on mobile devices, and improving accessibility for keyboard navigation and screen reader users. * Chapter Importing: Now, you can import individual chapters from public, openly licensed Pressbooks webbooks using the Import tool. All you need to drop is drop in the URL to a book, begin the import process, then select the chapters you wish to add to your book. (Content that is private, All Rights Reserved or that carries any of the Creative Commons Non-Derivative licenses cannot be imported.) * Content Visibility: Pressbooks has made it more intuitive to manage the visibility of your content across web and exports. Now you can simply designate content visibility in web and exports on both the Organize page and the edit screen for individual front matter, chapters and back matter. * Import Files from URL: You can now import supported file formats hosted on remote (web based) sources via URL. If you have files hosted elsewhere (with the right permissions), you no longer need to download and upload files, but can import them directly with just the URL. * Ebook Start Point: Pressbooks has moved the ebook start point setting to the ebook Theme Options page to ensure that only one front matter, chapter, or back matter can be set as the ebook start point. (Note that Pressbooks tries to enforce the ebook start point you select. However, ereader devices may still override the start point you designate.) * Language Support Changes: Pressbooks has renamed the Language Support section in Theme Options to Language & Script Support to better reflect its functionality; we’ve also re-labelled Hindi support to Devanagari, to clarify that the Devanagari script supports Hindi, Sanskrit, and over 120 other languages. interesting Open report out of UBC

For those of you that would like to see what is happening at other institutions, here is a UBC Open snapshot. Here's a few stats as a teaser .... Since 2011, at least 155 UBC courses have been identified as having used open textbooks, OERs, or freely accessible resources instead of traditional textbooks. And if we look across those past six years, 47,423 UBC students were enrolled in those courses using open resources. The estimated cost savings for students has also increased over the past few years. Its intent is to recognize the significant role the literature review plays in the research process and to prepare students for the work that goes into writing one. Major areas of philosophy covered are Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Socio-Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics. Gathering information about zero textbook courses (reply requested by January 15)

I am currently working to build a comprehensive list of courses with zero required textbook costs so that they can be identified for students when the course timetable for each semester goes live (approximately two weeks before course registration begins). For now, the zero textbook cost notation is added manually and requires a bit of coordination behind the scenes. To help expedite this process and fill gaps in this list concerning your courses, I have created a very brief (4 question) data gathering form. If this is relevant to you, I would be grateful if you could complete this form by January 15 (it shouldn't take you more than 3-4 minutes). Survey shows OER on the rise in higher ed

Hello! (Apologies for the cross-posting) The team at Babson Survey Research Group is out today with a report on the use of OER in higher education. The study is based on responses of over 2,700 faculty and there are a number of helpful findings. And The Chronicle of Higher Education published a story on the findings: [ https://www.chronicle.com/article/Use-of-Free-Textbooks-Is/242086 | https://www.chronicle.com/article/Use-of-Free-Textbooks-Is/242086 ] Key Findings Include: * Faculty awareness of OER has increased, with 29 percent of faculty reporting that they were “Aware” or “Very Aware” of open educational resources, up from 25 percent last year and 20 percent the year before. * Graphic #1: Increase Awareness * Large enrollment introductory undergraduate courses have adopted openly licensed OpenStax College textbooks at a rate (16.5 percent) equivalent to that of commercial publication adoption. * Graphic #2: OER & Traditional Textbooks * A majority of faculty classify cost as "Very important" for their selection of required course materials. * OER can be as successful as commercial alternatives. * Faculty report equal levels of satisfaction with OER OpenStax materials and traditional textbooks. Textbooks too pricey? How does free sound?

[https://meltwater-apps-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/images/566fd8623…] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 1, 2017 KPU unveils sweet suite of courses with no-cost textbooks Metro Vancouver, B.C. – Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) are about to save thousands of dollars on their education, thanks to dozens of courses that don’t require expensive, commercial textbooks. Launched Nov. 1, the courses are part of KPU’s Zed Cred program, which is the first of its kind in Canada. The "Z" in Zed Cred refers to zero textbook costs and the “Cred” refers to an entire degree program, in this case KPU’s certificate of arts credential. “Even a single textbook can cost well over $100, which means a student can spend thousands of dollars on textbooks on top of the cost of tuition during their post-secondary career,” said Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani, a university teaching fellow in open studies and psychology instructor. KPU has launched close to 50 courses in the Faculty of Arts that use either free open textbooks or free library materials that are available online. Third-year KPU psychology student Bethany Borkowski is already planning to take three Zed Cred courses in counselling psychology, sociology, and journalism. Borkowski estimates she’s spent about $700 on textbooks to date, despite buying mostly old and used editions. “The high cost of textbooks limits university learning to those who have accessibility and the financial resources available to cover additional costs,” says Borkowski. “I know many people who do not buy textbooks because of the cost, and they miss out on valuable information for a course.” In fact, Jhangiani recently published his research showing that 54 per cent of BC post-secondary students do not purchase at least one of their required course textbooks because of cost. The introduction of Zed Cred means Borkowski will no longer have to guess what page an instructor is referring to due to differences in their respective textbook editions, she’ll have access to her materials anywhere, and she won’t have to carry any heavy tomes around with her. Borkowski says open educational resources also make courses much more engaging. “Instead of just reading from a textbook, we had access to more resources online through hyperlinks in the text and suggested readings from the instructor.” KPU’s Zed Cred was made possible thanks to a $35,000 grant from BCcampus to adopt and adapt pre-existing free online open education resources as well as create new ones. KPU also received an Open Education Resource Grant, which matches BCcampus funding with KPU funding for creating new open textbooks, redesigning existing resources, and providing workshops, training and other support services. Open Access week workshop series - Pressbooks, OJS, open content, and Wikipedia in Academia

Invitation to Wikipedia edit-a-thon Sept 18

Hi all, This is a friendly invitation to stop by the Surrey Campus Library on Sept 18 (between 11-3) to join in on our Science Literacy Week BC Wikipedia edit-a-thon. No experience necessary. We have partnered with several other BC post-secondary libraries, and have received generous support from BCcampus. For more details, please see http://libguides.kpu.ca/scilitweek/Wikipedia We would especially like to welcome those faculty curious about the possibilities of incorporating Wikipedia writing/editing into their classroom activities and assignments. Learning how to write content and edit Wikipedia provides students with practical experience in critically evaluating information, assessing authority in context, and exploring issues around copyright and open access. The edit-a-thon will be a preliminary chance to get familiar with the editing interface and some of the basic Wikipedia writing guidelines of verifiability and neutrality. Along with the Teaching and Learning Commons, we are in the early planning stages of hosting a second, more targeted workshop to support faculty, later this semester. Stay tuned for details! Greetings Open Education Colleagues: In early 2017, the Creative Commons Global Network (CCGN) completed a consultation process of renewing and reorganizing itself to support a strong and growing global movement. Part of the new strategy is to establish defined areas of focus, or “platforms,” which will drive CC’s global activities. Call for participants: Faculty Learning Community on Open Educational Practices

Dear colleagues, Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) are supportive and ongoing discussion groups that allow KPU colleagues to gather from across departments in order to discuss and develop their skills around a specific teaching and learning topic. This Fall we will launch an FLC that will focus on open educational practices, with a special emphasis on open pedagogy<https://press.rebus.community/makingopentextbookswithstudents/chapter/open-…>. Open Pedagogy is both an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education as well as a process of designing architectures and using tools for learning that enable students to shape the public knowledge commons of which they are a part. Members of this FLC will meet monthly, between October 2017 and April 2018, and will critically explore and workshop innovative open educational practices and how these might be implemented in one or more of their own courses. This FLC is limited to 10 participants and will be facilitated by Rajiv Jhangiani (Psychology). Libraries, museums, schools and community science groups will be celebrating Canadian science and scientists through a number of events. One of the events to start things off will be libraries at BCIT, Douglas College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia and perhaps others…. will be hosting Wikipedia edit-a-thons starting on September 18th. A Wikipedia edit-a-thon is an event where new and experienced writers and editors come together to make edits, add citations and create new content in Wikipedia. Wikipedia is everywhere. Google searches bring up Wikipedia articles often as the first result; and Wikipedia is a reference source frequently used by students and the public. Learning about how to edit and add content to Wikipedia provides many relevant learning experiences for students, staff and researchers covering areas as varied as open access, scholarly communication, copyright, construction of information, evaluation and situating information in context, wikis, peer-review, and more. Wikipedia edit-a-thons offer a practical, hands-on experience of writing and collaborating on research. It is also a way to engage faculty in thinking about the potential value of Wikipedia for creating learning activities in their courses. Last year, BCIT Library, SFU Library & UBC Library partnered on a Wikipedia edit-athon for Science Literacy Week. Our theme was local women and science.
