Dear colleagues,
The Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg> brings together key stakeholders from across the institution to provide advice and support for KPU’s open education initiatives, which include the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources, the development of Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) programs, and the embrace of innovative open pedagogies. The OEWG meets once a semester when it adjudicates KPU’s OER Grant program<https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants>, but conducts most of its activities asynchronously in between those meetings.
As the term of one of our current faculty representatives is soon coming to an end, this is a call for expressions of interest from faculty who would like to join this dynamic group for a two-year term. To read more about the mandate, composition, and operating procedures of this group, please visit: https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg
Please submit all expressions of interest to open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca> by Friday, November 12, 2021.
Very best,

At KPU, we work, study, and live in a region south of the Fraser River which overlaps with the unceded traditional and ancestral lands of the Kwantlen, Musqueam, Katzie, Semihamoo, Tsawwassen, Qayqayt, and Kwikwetlen peoples.
The below message is sent on behalf of the primary investigator, Deirdre Maultsaid, School of Business.
Dear Colleagues:
I am Deirdre Maultsaid, the KPU Open Education Research Fellow, 2021 and am doing a research project on care and open pedagogy, at the following four British Columbia institutions: Douglas, KPU, Langara and TRU (Ethics ID: H21-01455).
I am recruiting students and hope that you can make an announcement to your students at the above four institutions. Can you please disseminate the attached invitation or embedded invitation to students to participate in the research focus groups. Please only disseminate the message to students via email, not by posting it into your Learning Management System as using your LMS is not approved by ethics boards, for lots of good reasons.
You do not have to promote or advocate for this research; you can simply send the approved invitation. Not to worry, when students go to the link, there is a full consent process before they participate.
Any questions, Deirdre.maultsaid(a)kpu.ca<mailto:Deirdre.maultsaid@kpu.ca>
Thank you so much for helping to disseminate this invitation.
*MESSAGE TO STUDENTS:*
[cidimage005.jpg(a)01D7AFC1.106DCFE0]
Students: Please help us find out if creating open pedagogy inspires you to care more.
Please join a voluntary focus group with students from Douglas, KPU, Langara, and TRU in order to help create free and open learning materials. You will attend two to three group sessions of 2.5 hours each, to create cases for class discussions. Your initial questionnaire, focus group and reflections on the process will be analyzed to see if the process of students creating learning materials encourages you to care more for yourself, other students, teachers and the postsecondary community. You could be acknowledged by name as a co-author of the open resource/book, which will be used in BC and beyond. You will have helped to create caring, relevant, ethical study materials. Also, you will receive a $30 gift card. Please click the link below to provide your contact information, to answer a few questions in order to create your profile and to give your consent to the research project.

Interculturalizing the Curriculum is the third in a series of educator development resources on interculturality. Developed for the KPU Intercultural Teaching Program, this short book engages educators in two main strands of interculturalizing the curriculum: (1) revising curriculum to reflect intercultural learning outcomes, and diverse content from multiple perspectives, and (2) supporting student interculturality development.

Link to Resources: Introduction to Consumer Behaviour<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=42…> & Ancillary Resource Guide<https://opentextbc.ca/ancillaryconsumerbehaviour/>
This open textbook was designed for students studying business or marketing at an undergraduate level. It draws on the fields of marketing, business, communications, media studies, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The book invites readers to examine the internal forces that shape consumer decision making, such as perceptions, motivations, personality, and attitudes as well as the external ones, such as social and situational influences, culture, and subcultures. This text centres the lived experiences of today’s consumers, specifically, undergraduate students. The author has also made efforts to decentre whiteness and dominant culture perspectives wherever possible to ensure a broader and more accurate representation of diverse consumers.
This OER contains content created by students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and is best used alongside the Ancillary Resource Guide<https://opentextbc.ca/ancillaryconsumerbehaviour/> that contains several essays, case studies, assignments, and project outlines, and an accompanying multiple choice test bank.

---
Dear colleagues,
I am writing to let you know about a BCcampus expression of interest request regarding the development of open courses<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbccampus.…>.
In summer 2020, BCcampus began creating a collection of open courses<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcollectio…> to assist instructors and course developers in creating and updating their courses, particularly while transitioning from in-person teaching to online. The collection currently contains nine full courses that are openly licensed and ready for use.
We are looking for B.C. applicants who have developed, adapted, or adopted an open textbook in our B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fopen.bcca…> to develop a new open course, or adapt an existing open course, that accompanies the textbook.
Up to $8000 is available per grant, depending on how much work is required.
Deadline for submissions is September 20, 2021.
Read the expression of interest for more information. If you have any questions, please contact Melanie Meyers at mmeyers(a)bccampus.ca<mailto:mmeyers@bccampus.ca>.

This open educational resource (OER) brings together Canadian and international scholars in a contemporary, pluralistic volume introducing undergraduates in a variety of relevant disciplines to political ideologies and worldviews. This introductory volume is also suitable for a wider general audience. The first of its kind, this fully open textbook on political worldviews deals with the historical development of classical ideologies, while expanding and updating the subject using contemporary political examples and non-Eurocentric examinations of ideology. The volume includes chapters on Indigenous worldviews, Confucianism, and the future of ideology in the emerging global order. The text also includes a valuable sets of discussion questions for each chapter.

Dear colleagues,
It is with immense pleasure and pride that I share the news that our Open Publishing Suite (OPUS) Team has received the Outstanding Contribution Award from the BC Library Association<https://libguides.kpu.ca/library/news/KPUs-OPUS-Team-wins-Outstanding-Achie…>. This award is presented every year to an academic library team or individual who has made a real difference to students, faculty or colleagues in British Columbia.
Launched in March 2019, OPUS<https://www.kpu.ca/library/OPUS> - a suite of Library services and tools - was created to support faculty at various stages in producing their Open Education Resources. This support has helped foster the creation of over 20 Open textbooks as well as several journals and the inclusion of a variety of faculty authored materials in KPU’s institutional repository.
In addition to one-on-one consultations, the Team has also created several guides and workshops for faculty and students related to various aspects of Open Access and publishing, as well as sharing their knowledge with libraries at other institutions wanting to create their own Open publishing program.
Please join me in congratulating our wonderful colleagues and OPUS Team members:

Open educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions. The creation, adaptation, and adoption of OER supports equitable access to education.
Open pedagogy may be understood as an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education. An increasingly popular form of open pedagogy involves the design and use of renewable assignments.
Renewable assignments (also known as non-disposable assignments)those that add value to a student's world, live outside of the boundaries and beyond the duration of the course, and are likely to have a lasting impact. Disposable assignments, on the other hand, are those that only the instructor and students will see and which students are likely to throw away once they have been graded (Seraphin et al., 2019<https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1475725718811711>; Wiley, 2013 <https://opencontent.org/blog/archives/2975> ).
Accepting applications now through March 31.

Dear colleagues,
Open Education Week is fast approaching! To celebrate, BCcampus is hosting an Open Education Challenge Series<https://oechallenge.opened.ca/about-the-open-education-challenge-series/> for educators interested in learning more about open education practices (OEP). From March 1 to March 5, we will release two challenges a day. A challenge is a micro activity that you can do in 10 minutes or less that will introduce a small aspect of open education.
Everyone is welcome to participate, but the challenges are designed for educators who are new to open education. Topics to explore include open licences, open textbooks, and perhaps even open pedagogy! This isn’t a bootcamp or crash course in open education: it’s more of a tasting buffet of appetizers, designed to allow even the most time-constrained educators to participate.
Please share this event with your departments and networks, especially those who are new to open education. Invite your colleagues to participate with you! It’s a great way to learn about OEP together. Here is the event page and where to register: OE Challenge Series 2021<https://bccampus.ca/event/open-education-challenge-series-2021/>
Sincerely,
The Facilitators: Carolee Clyne, Josie Gray, Clint Lalonde, Melanie Meyers, and Krista Lambert

Wicked Problems and Open Remedies: A student centered approach
Facilitated by Arley Cruthers (KPU)
Panelists: Kristen Morgan (UBC Okanagan), Sophia Nguyen (SFU), Caitlin Spreeuw (Douglas College)
In planning and policy, a wicked problem is one that is difficult or impossible to solve due to incomplete, contradictory, interconnected, and/or changing factors. A problem that requires a major change in practice, belief, or behaviour for many people is often a wicked problem. Drawing on this idea, we turn our attention to the wicked problem in higher education of empowering students in the classroom, and centre student voices in exploring the challenges and potential solutions for tackling this problem.
This event is organized by the BC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL) group with sponsorship from BCcampus, Capilano University, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Langara College, and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan campus.

Open Pedagogy in Practice: Students as content creators
Facilitated by Andrea Niosi
No textbook? No problem! In this session you will learn how one faculty member designed a 4th year capstone course so students could become content creators for the course.
