Our annual Open Pedagogy Fellowship provides support for faculty to design "renewable assignments," authentic assessments that help students become agents of change in their communities. The assignments are collaboratively developed by multi-disciplinary teams across three institutions-KPU, Montgomery College (Maryland, USA), and Maricopa Community Colleges (Arizona, USA). The conceptual framework on which this fellowship is based is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<https://en.unesco.org/sdgs> (UN SDGs), which is a set of 17 goals that address a wide range of social issues, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and peace and justice. The faculty teams design their course assignments over the summer and deploy them over the following academic year. A student showcase in the Spring provides an opportunity for the wider university community to appreciate the students' contributions.
We are pleased to announce that KPU's 2020 Open Pedagogy Fellows are:
Andrea Niosi (Marketing)
Constanza Rojas-Primus (Languages and Cultures)
David Sadoway (Geography)
Dorothy Barenscott (Art History)
Please join us in congratulating our latest fellows!

Dear colleagues,
BCcampus has just put out a call for grant proposals focused on developing activities using H5P.
This is the first of two calls for proposals targeting the development of formative activities for open homework systems. The second call will be issued in early summer 2020 and will focus on a soon to be determined platform that supports math-based courses and programs.
This first call for proposals is for post-secondary instructors and faculty in British Columbia to develop sets of content types in H5P that support open textbooks in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection. The intent of these grants is to develop activities in which students can practice applying new concepts and skills that align with content within the selected open textbook.
Eligible grantees include individual instructors, groups of faculty or instructors (either in a single institution or across multiple institutions), departments (either at a single institution or working collaboratively across multiple institutions), institutions, or external working groups made up of instructors and faculty connected to B.C. post-secondary institutions (i.e., articulation groups or other working groups).
The maximum value of each grant is $10,000.
For more information and to apply, please see:
https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/call-for-proposals-2020-h5p-…
All best,
Karen

Kwantlen Polytechnic University ? Where thought meets action
Good afternoon everyone,
With the shift to remote delivery many of you are taking advantage of open textbooks and other Open Educational Resources (OER). We would like to remind you that KPU provides 3 levels of grants to support faculty and staff working with OER:
OER Adoption Grants support faculty who wish to adopt OER in place of commercial textbooks and recognize the efforts involved in implementing this change. Successful individual applicants are eligible to receive up to $500 towards the professional development activity of their choosing. Teams of faculty may receive up to $1,500 towards a group event, project or activity. Applications for OER Adoption Grants are accepted on an ongoing basis until all funds have been allocated.
OER Adaptation Grants support the adaptation (customization/localization/update/remix) of existing open textbooks or other kinds of OER. Projects receive funding up to $2000 (which may be used to hire student assistants or provide honoraria to external collaborators) and in-kind assistance from the Library's Open Publishing Suite (OPUS)<https://www.kpu.ca/library/OPUS>.
?OER Creation Grants support the creation of new open textbooks or other kinds of OER. In addition to project funding up to $2000 (which may be used to hire student assistants or provide honoraria to external collaborators) and in-kind assistance from the Library's Open Publishing Suite (OPUS)<https://www.kpu.ca/library/OPUS>, successful applicants for OER Creation Grants will also receive up to $2000 towards any professional development activity of their choosing.
For more information about each of these grant programs, the (brief) application forms, and examples of previously funded projects please visit: https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants??<https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants>
The next application deadline for OER Adaptation and Creation Grants is Friday, May 1.
Please note that applications for OER Adoption grants are accepted on a rolling basis until all funds have been allocated.?
?
Stay safe and well!
Karen

Dear colleagues,
I am writing to let you know about online office hours offered by BCcampus to educators in need of support shifting from face-to-face to online instruction. We are offering three sessions this week, the details of which are included below.
Working Together, Learning Together
Invitation: To educators and anyone doing the work of “pivoting online” who would like to drop in with questions, and/or to hear others’ challenges and solutions.
Who is hosting: BCcampus — a passionate group of instructional designers, learning technologists, administrators, and more!
And why… We feel the enormous challenge you are facing today and in the weeks to come. We want to offer support, particularly to institutions and educators without access to a large teaching and learning support team.
Topics include (but are not limited to):
* Human Support/Communications
* Exams Online
* Experiential Learning Online
Expectation setting: We cannot offer or replace institution-specific supports, but we CAN talk through challenges like:
* I have an in-class final exam worth 30% – what could I do instead?
* My students are freaking out and I can’t keep up with the messages – what can I try?
* I want to do a live online session but I’ve never done that before – what can I do?
* I have this assignment … I’m not sure how to do it online – do you have ideas?
Join us for one or both sessions:
* March 24, 2020 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm<https://urls.bccampus.ca/6rg>
* March 27, 2020 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am<https://urls.bccampus.ca/6rh>
Starting at ground zero?
Join us for the super-duper basics of online learning AKA no dumb questions session.This drop-in is for folx who are completely new to the online teaching world. There are no dumb questions. We will try and cover the basics of online learning while giving you the space to ask your questions. March 25, 2020 @ 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm<https://urls.bccampus.ca/6ri>

Dear colleagues,
I am delighted to inform you that our inaugural Open Education Research Institute on May 14 is now full, with participants from across 15 institutions registered for the event, which will be held at our Civic Plaza campus. A waitlist is available.
As a reminder, the Open Education Research Institute (OERI) is an opportunity for new and emerging researchers interested in open educational practices to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skill set while connecting with other researchers and joining a Provincial mentorship network. The one-day institute will begin with an overview of existing research on open educational practices, including a special focus on research conducted in or by researchers in British Columbia. Participants will learn about different theoretical and methodological frameworks for research in open education and receive guidance on practical issues such as preparing applications for ethical review of their research projects and publishing their work in open access journals or repositories. Participants will work in affinity groups to draft and revise their research questions and be paired with an experienced researcher, who will serve as their mentor for the following year.
For more information about the event and to join the waitlist, please visit: https://www.kpu.ca/open/oeri

Dear colleagues,
Following the success of last year’s cohort, I am delighted to share this call for applications for the 2020 Open Pedagogy Fellowship<https://www.kpu.ca/open/un-sdg-fellowship> that will once again focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<https://en.unesco.org/sdgs> (SDGs). The SDGs are a set of 17 goals that address a wide range of social issues, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and peace and justice. This year, in addition to continuing to partner with faculty at Montgomery College (Maryland, USA), the fellowship is expanding to include faculty from Maricopa Community Colleges (Arizona, USA).
This fellowship program is designed to assist faculty with creating assignments to help students become agents of change in their own communities. Each fellowship team (which will include at least one faculty member from KPU and one faculty member from either Montgomery College or Maricopa Community Colleges) will design three “renewable assignments” during Summer 2020. A minimum of two assignments will be deployed in the classes of each fellowship team during the subsequent academic year. Faculty are expected to present to the KPU community at appropriate venues (e.g., Teaching, Learning, Scholarship, & Research Symposium) on their work. A student showcase will take place during the Spring 2021 semester (tentatively planned for Tuesday, February 23, 2021).
It is anticipated that up to 10 teams will be selected per year for the UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship, which includes training and support from the Office of Open Education. Open Pedagogy Fellows will be required to attend a kick-off meeting and three additional meetings throughout the summer:
* Tuesday, May 26, 10:00am-1:00pm (Kick-off Meeting)
* Wednesday, June 10, 10:00am-1:00pm
* Wednesday, June 24, 10:00am-1:00pm
* Wednesday, August 12, 10:00am-1:00pm
KPU faculty interested in becoming a UN SDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellow should discuss their interest with the Rajiv Jhangiani<mailto:rajiv.jhangiani@kpu.ca>, Associate Vice Provost, Open Education. There will be priority consideration for applications for teams, including interdisciplinary teams. Communications with Montgomery College/Maricopa Community Colleges faculty and students can be done entirely through web conferencing and/or email. Completed applications must be endorsed by the Dean of your Faculty/School and submitted to open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca> by midnight on March 30, 2020. Applications will be adjudicated by the Open Education Working Group<http://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg>. Faculty will be notified of acceptance into the fellowship the week of April 6, 2020.

At KPU, we work, study, and live in a region south of the Fraser River which overlaps with the unceded traditional and ancestral lands of the Kwantlen, Musqueam, Katzie, Semihamoo, Tsawwassen, Qayqayt, and Kwikwetlen peoples.
On May 14, 2020, KPU will host its inaugural Open Education Research Institute, a one-day training and networking opportunity for scholars across BC post-secondary institutions who wish to develop or enhance their open education research skills.
The Open Education Research Institute (OERI) is an opportunity for new and emerging researchers interested in open educational practices to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skill set while connecting with other researchers and joining a Provincial mentorship network.
The OERI is jointly funded by KPU Open Education and BCcampus. While there will be no cost to register for the event, registration is required to plan for catering and other logistics. The OERI has deliberately been scheduled to take place the day after the Festival of Learning<https://festival.bccampus.ca/> to make it easier for those travelling to the Lower Mainland for that event to participate in the institute.
Date: Thursday, May 14, 2020
Time: 8:30am- 4:30pm, followed by a no-host dinner
Address: KPU Richmond, 8771 Lansdowne Rd, Richmond, BC V6X 3X7
Room: Wilson 4900

Dear colleagues,
I am happy to close out the year with the publication of a new open textbook at KPU. This book, Student Engagement Activities for Business Communications<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/businesscomms/> is co-authored by Melissa Ashman, Arley Cruthers, Sarah Duncan, Karen Inkster Vance, and Panteli Tritchew, all colleagues in our Applied Communications program. The book is a compilation resource for instructors of workplace writing and oral presentations. The activities in this book can add value and energy to the classroom by engaging students in activities that support their learning. Handouts, links, activity variations, and debrief questions are included.
You can browse through or download the book (in a variety of digital formats) at: https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/businesscomms/
Please join me in congratulating Melissa, Arley, Sarah, Karen, and Panteli. I have no doubt that their collaborative efforts will inspire even more teaching and learning innovation within and beyond KPU.
Warm regards and a very happy holidays to you all,
Rajiv

Dear colleagues,
I have two wonderful developments to share:
First, Betty Cunnin and Michelle Nakano have just received a grant from BCcampus for OER development for the Trades. Their project will focus on the development of an open textbook for students studying a keystone subject for the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship: Identify plants and plant requirements. The newly harmonized Red Seal Occupational Standard establishes skills and knowledge to identify plants and plant requirements across all four program levels, however the proposed OER will focus on Learning Competency F2 for Level 1 and Level 2.
And second, Anita Sangha has just been appointed to the Provincial Business Programs Advisory Committee for Open Education at BCcampus.
Kudos to Betty, Michelle, and Anita!
Cheers,
Rajiv

Introduction to Open Pedagogy
Open Pedagogy may be understood as an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education and as a process of designing architectures and using tools for learning that enable students to shape the public knowledge commons of which they are a part. In practice, open pedagogy can involve creating, adapting, or updating open educational resources with students, building course policies, outcomes, assignments, rubrics, and schedules of work collaboratively with students, or facilitating student-created and student-controlled learning environments. This session (co-facilitated with Arley Cruthers and Andrea Niosi) will introduce principles of open pedagogy, showcase examples of innovative applications at KPU, and equip you with resources and mentorship to support further experimentation.
