Subject: [Openkpu] Congratulations to Betty Cunnin, Michelle Nakano, and Anita Sangha!
Dear colleagues,
I have two wonderful developments to share:
First, Betty Cunnin and Michelle Nakano have just received a grant from BCcampus for OER development for the Trades. Their project will focus on the development of an open textbook for students studying a keystone subject for the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship: Identify plants and plant requirements. The newly harmonized Red Seal Occupational Standard establishes skills and knowledge to identify plants and plant requirements across all four program levels, however the proposed OER will focus on Learning Competency F2 for Level 1 and Level 2.
And second, Anita Sangha has just been appointed to the Provincial Business Programs Advisory Committee for Open Education at BCcampus.
Kudos to Betty, Michelle, and Anita!
Cheers,
Rajiv

Dear colleagues,
I am delighted to share the news that Arley Cruthers will be joining the Open Education team for the Spring 2020 semester as a Teaching Fellow. A recipient of the BCcampus Award for Excellence in Open Education<https://bccampus.ca/2019/05/30/award-for-excellence-in-open-education-arley…>, Arley brings great experience with creating and adapting open educational resources (OER) as well as with designing courses to integrate elements of open pedagogy in her Applied Communications courses. If you are unfamiliar with Arley’s work, check out the latest episode of the well-known Teaching in Higher Ed podcast<https://teachinginhighered.com/podcast/process-over-product-in-open-educati…>, which features her as this week’s guest.
Although Arley will primarily be working to support OER and ZTC program development within the School of Business, she will also be involved in supporting institution-wide open education initiatives next semester.
Please join me in congratulating Arley!
Cheers,

Dear colleagues,
Yesterday at an Open Access Week event<https://www.kpu.ca/library/Open_Access> at our Richmond campus (co-hosted with UBC, SFU, BCIT, and Langara) we announced the launch of our seventh Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program<https://www.kpu.ca/news/2019/10/22/kpu-launches-first-zero-textbook-cost-de…> in the form of the Bachelor of Arts Degree in General Studies. This is the first four-year ZTC program in North America and builds on more than 700 unique courses that are now offered as ZTC. As of this semester we have saved KPU students more than $3.1 million in textbook costs. The new program means that an individual student could save more than $5000 over the course of their B.A.
There is, of course, an enormous amount of work that goes into developing a large program like this and I am especially grateful to our colleagues in the Library, members of our Open Education Working Group<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg>, the Bookstore print-on-demand team, the Office of the Registrar’s Scheduling team, Office of Planning & Accountability staff, and of course the more than 300 faculty across every Faculty and School at the institution who are actively participating in this initiative.

The Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg>, in collaboration with the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA)<https://kusa.ca/>, has established an OER adoption grant to support faculty who wish to adopt OER in place of commercial textbooks and to recognize the efforts involved in implementing this change.
Individuals or teams teaching multi-section courses may apply for the grant. Successful individual applicants are eligible to receive up to a $500 towards the professional development activity of their choosing. Teams may receive up to $1,500 towards a group event, project or activity. Annual funding for the OER adoption grant fund is $10,000.
Ultimately, the purpose of the OER adoption grant is to reduce the cost of education to students while maximizing access to, and use of, textbooks and other learning resources, by all students--regardless of their financial circumstances.
Note: It is recognized that for pedagogical and practical reasons it may not be possible to adopt OER in every course/discipline.
Application guidelines
• Applicants must be regular faculty members.
• Faculty members or teams may only submit one application per course.
• The open textbook/OER must be a required resource for the course, replacing a commercial textbook or resource.
• The adoption of the OER must reduce the cost to students and increase their use of a learning resource.
• The number of course sections offered per year will be considered when adjudicating applications.
• The grant will be awarded to faculty or teams following their successful adoption of an open textbook or other OER.
• The OEWG will put out a call for applications each semester.
• The OEWG will review applications until the available funding has been allocated.
Note: The application form is attached to this email.

Open Education for a Better World (OE4BW) is an international online mentoring program, supporting the development and implementation of open educational resources that include and address at least one of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/>. This Call follows the first two cohorts of the OE4BW program where 49 Open Educational Resources (OER) projects were developed by 49 participants under the supervision of 67 mentors, coming from 25 countries from all over the globe. This included KPU’s own Christina Page (The Learning Centres) who served as a mentor and Andrea Niosi (Marketing) who was a participant.
So far, the developers and mentors were regionally coordinated by Hub leaders in the following three Regional Hubs:
* Africa and Europe Hub,
* Asia and South Pacific Hub,
* North and South America Hub.
In this year’s OE4BW Call, a new, topic-oriented SDG7 Hub (i.e. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all) is added.

The Festival of Learning is B.C.’s largest celebration of teaching and learning in higher education and will take place from May 11-13, 2020. Held every two years and welcoming about 500 attendees from all over B.C. and beyond, the Festival is a great opportunity for faculty, students, leaders, librarians, learning designers, educational technologists and accessibility/ disability educators and professionals to network and learn together.
This year’s theme is disruption and transformation in post-secondary education. The deadline for proposals is November 15, 2019.
We welcome your proposals from all areas of higher education as we grapple with key questions, such as:
* How are open educational practices (OEP) transforming teaching and learning? How do OEP disrupt traditional power structures and narratives in education? How are the open education and open access movements challenging the status quo? Where are they falling short?
* How are you “disrupting” teaching and learning practices, policies, and processes? What disruptions call for creative adaptation and change?
* How are you engaging in reconciliation, Indigenous pedagogy, decolonization, or Indigenization in your teaching and learning practices?
* Technology is often seen as a disruptor and catalyst for transformation. How can we effectively and creatively use educational technologies to support learning?
* What transformations are needed to make post-secondary institutions and learning environments inclusive and accessible to support every student?
* As educators, how do we respond skillfully to the global climate crisis? What is our role and responsibility to the planet at this critical time?

The Open Education Working Group is pleased to announce expanded support for the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open textbooks and other open educational resources (OER). Three types of grants<https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants> are now available:
1. OER Adoption Grant
With the generous support of the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA)<https://kusa.ca/>, OER Adoption Grants are now available to support faculty who wish to adopt OER in place of commercial textbooks and aimed at recognizing the effort involved in implementing this change.
Applications will be adjudicated by the Open Education Working Group<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg> on a rolling basis until funds are spent.
2. OER Adaptation Grant
OER Adaptation projects may include proposals to adapt existing open textbooks by updating or localizing them, making them interactive by incorporating H5P applications<https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications>, or developing ancillary resources (such a question banks) to support existing open textbooks, including in collaboration with students (via open pedagogy) or with other faculty collaborators.
OER Adaptation Grants are funded by the Office of Open Education and adjudicated by the Open Education Working Group. Grant recipients receive funding up to $2000, which may be used to hire student assistants, pay honoraria to external collaborators, and more. In-kind assistance is also offered through Open Education, the Library, and Teaching & Learning Commons. Applications are reviewed three times a year (May 1, September 1, and January 15) until the available funding has been allocated.
3. OER Creation Grant
OER Creation projects may include proposals to author new open textbooks in areas of need. In addition to project funding up to $2000 and in-kind assistance from Open Education, the Library, and Teaching & Learning Commons, successful applicants for OER Creation Grants will also receive up to $2000 towards any professional development activity of their choosing.
The eligibility, eligible expenses, expectations, in-kind contributions, evaluation criteria, and application process for OER Creation grants are identical to OER Adaptation Grants.

Summary of Jessie’s talk
Sometimes when folks are in the midst of a monumental, feel-good shift, they fail to realize who has been excluded from that space. Librarians and scholars have been advocating the ideals of open access for many years and have seen the exciting changes the movement creates for public knowledge. Yet we rarely think about whose voices are absent and the structures of power that limit this project. Together, we’ll query our positionality in these spaces, and consider how the politics of refusal and an ethic of care might intersect to complicate the open access movement, potentially creating futurities of reciprocity. If rethought as a tool of resurgence, open access can support justice.

Good afternoon everyone,
I am delighted to share some updated statistics with you from our Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) initiative:
* We have now crossed $3.1 million in student savings. In the first year of the program (2018) we exceeded $1 million in savings whereas this year we have exceeded $2 million.
* The ZTC initiative now includes six credentials based on more than 700 unique courses that are taught by more than 300 instructors.
To view the data dashboard and learn more about our six ZTC programs, visit https://www.kpu.ca/open/ztc
Many thanks to Andrea Mah and Jasmine Marahar, student assistants who have been working on collecting and verifying these data.
Cheers,
Rajiv

Dear colleagues,
I am delighted to share the news that we have just received a BCcampus Open Education Sustainability Grant<https://open.bccampus.ca/call-for-proposals/open-education-sustainability-g…>. This grant provides us with an additional $32,250 in funds over the next two years, support which will allow us to:
* enhance and further professionalize our Open Publishing Suite<https://www.kpu.ca/library/OPUS> by adding support for graphic design/layout, LaTeX authoring (e.g., for equations in Math, Physics, etc.), and a pre-publication peer review program for open textbooks published at KPU
* enhance our open education research capacity by establishing an annual Open Education Research Fellowship and host an annual Open Education Research Institute in partnership with the Office of Research Services (details to follow soon)
* expand our Open Pedagogy Fellowship program<https://www.kpu.ca/open/un-sdg-fellowship> that focuses on the UN’s sustainable development goals
* developing a suite of resources and guides that will support our colleagues and the broader open education community
For more information read the BCcampus press release at https://urls.bccampus.ca/6mp
I look forward to sharing details of these and other new forms of support that will soon be available to the KPU community.
Warm regards,
Rajiv

Open Pedagogy<http://openpedagogy.org/> is an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven education and a process of designing architectures and using tools for learning that enable students to shape the public knowledge commons of which they are a part.
Open pedagogy in practice can include creating, adapting, or updating open educational resources with students, building course policies, outcomes, assignments, rubrics, and schedules of work collaboratively with students, or facilitating student-created and student-controlled learning environments such as Domain of One’s Own<https://reclaimhosting.com/domain-of-ones-own/>.
In 2018, KPU ran two cohorts of an interdisciplinary Faculty Learning Community (FLC) on Open Pedagogy (one face-to-face and one virtual). Each group explored a variety of open educational practices that go far beyond open textbooks and critically examined ways in which students and faculty can use open resources, open licensing, and open tools to work together to design powerful and authentic learning experiences. Each group read and annotated a single article and then met for a biweekly discussion.
This Fall, KPU is proud to partner with Keene State College<https://www.keene.edu/> in Keene, New Hampshire for an inter-institutional virtual FLC on Open Pedagogy. The FLC will meet biweekly on Mondays at 1:30pm Pacific Time (4:30pm Eastern Time) on the following dates: October 7, October 21, November 4, November 18, December 2, & December 16. The FLC will be co-facilitated by Karen Cangialosi (Professor of Biology & Open Education Faculty Fellow, Keene State College) and Rajiv Jhangiani (Associate Vice Provost, Open Education, Kwantlen Polytechnic University) and will be limited to 10 participants from each institution. Participants are expected to attend all of the sessions.
To express your interest in joining the FLC please complete the webform at: https://www.kpu.ca/open/flc
Thank you!
Rajiv
