The contents of this collection will continue to be available at collection.bccampus.ca<https://collection.bccampus.ca/>. Open textbooks and open course packs have been hosted on collection.bccampus.ca since June 2022. Ever since this site was launched, there has been a notice on the home page of open.bccampus.ca letting users know about the new collection site. This notice has been revised to state the closure date of the collection on open.bccampus.ca. We will be sure to send out several notices to the community about the upcoming closure. Can Open Pedagogy Encourage Care? Student Perspectives

Hello! I want to share this new article that was recently published by KPU faculty member Deirdre Maultsaid and TRU faculty member Michelle Harrison. This publication is the result of Deirdre’s year working with us as an Open Education Research Fellow and explores student perspectives on Open Pedagogy. Can Open Pedagogy Encourage Care? Student Perspectives<https://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/6901> Abstract: As a response to the increasing commercialization of postsecondary education, educators argue for a practice of care in education. Open pedagogy (OP) seems like an ideal practice where care, trust, and inclusion can be realized. OP is characterized as a democratic and collaborative pedagogical practice, in which students and teachers work to co-create learning and knowledge using openly licensed materials, open platforms, and other open processes. The purposes of this study were, first, to reveal ways students in postsecondary institutions perceive care and, second, to determine how students suggest OP can be used to create an open/caring learning process. A task-oriented focus group method engaged students from four teaching-focused institutions. The students created open cases on social issues for class discussion and reflected on care and OP processes in postsecondary settings. Using four elements of the ethics of care—attentiveness, responsibility, competence, and trustworthiness—as conceptual categories, the study examined students’ experience of care and care in OP using affective coding and thematic analysis. The results showed that through OP, with teacher support and explicitly designed practices of care, students can assert their agency, have quintessential roles in creating and participating in highly relevant curriculum and importantly, care about others, and be cared for. OP is a process able to involve a diverse population of students and embody care as an all-encompassing practice. Summary of results: Estimating time needed to create and maintain OER textbooks

Summary of Results Fanshawe College: “In the colleges we compensate full-time faculty through a course release and part time faculty through a curriculum development contract to the equivalent of the FT folks. This works out to about 6 hrs a week for a 14-week semester and 12 hrs during the condensed 7-week summer term. We provide all the support, and the faculty member is responsible for the content. New OER: Stitched - sewing techniques, how-to, and more

Hi everyone! We’re excited to share with you the following new OER that has just been published at KPU: Stitched sewing techniques, how-to, and more By: Heather Clark and Catherine Hay [cid:image001.jpg@01D9E7B7.0B888CB0] Within the fashion, sewing, and textile classrooms it is a challenge to find a textbook on the topic of sewing that covers the range of skills and techniques taught within these learning spaces. Typically to supplement student learning, handouts will be utilized along with in-class, and in-person demos. The open-source and online format of this OER will enable educators to continually update the resource to meet current student needs, learning outcomes, and reflect best practices within the apparel and fashion industry. Content in this OER supports skills and knowledge learned within the classroom while providing supportive resources for learners. This open-source learning resource contains details and step-by-step instructions, supported with images, videos, and text. This resource will be continually worked on, with videos, text, and information being added. The vision for this resource is to provide learning resources to the sewing community – an array of learners, with multiple ways of ‘how-to’. Estimating time needed to create and maintain OER textbooks

Hi All, This message is cross-posted. I've had a request to provide estimates for the number of faculty hours that are required for both creation of a new OER textbook and ongoing maintenance of an existing work. This information will be used to develop budget numbers for offloads. I know the hours can vary greatly based on topic, technology, and format! But, I believe I have seen grant programs that include an assumption of the number of hours funded. Any information about how you estimate the amount of time allocated for large projects would be appreciated, especially in the area of business. Thanks in advance! New OER: ¡Voy en camino! Spanish Language and Intercultural Learning

Spanish Language and Intercultural Learning Written by: Constanza Rojas-Primus and Ana Robles Primary Subject: Language learning: grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation [cid:image001.png@01D9DB48.6B316DB0] ¡Voy en camino! means “I’m on my way” in Spanish. Since learning an additional language and the culture is a journey in itself, ¡Voy en camino! captures the voyage to get there. ¡Voy en camino! has been created to serve the first two introductory Spanish language courses at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and to solidify our commitment to Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC). All units of study are designed to be interactive with embedded audio, videos and links for learners to practice the material along the way. Learners can self-pace and self-test their knowledge both individually and with the assistance of an instructor. ¡Voy en camino! has plenty of opportunities to practice writing and speaking with downloadable capabilities becoming a Spanish teaching and learning tool that promotes and supports sustainable renewable learning. Contemporary Issues in Collection Management open textbook Inbox

Dear Colleagues, On behalf of Kelsey Cameron, Chelsea Chiovelli, Danielle Deschamps, Marty Grande-Sherbert, Sadaf Hakimizadeh, Andrew Ip, Olesya Komarnytska, Amy Nowakowsky, Winston Pei, Nicole Pope, Reis Pouliot, Melissa Ramsey, Julia Sieben, Maia Trotter, Grace Turnbull, Kat Voy, Dandi Wang, and Faye Willauer, I am pleased to announce the publication of the openly licensed, textbook *Contemporary Issues in Collection Management (CIiCM) <https://openeducationalberta.ca/ciicm/>*. This Pressbooks OER is made available thanks to Open Education Alberta and University of Alberta Libraries. *CIiCM* examines several different issues in collection management. Topics covered include physical vs. digital collections; the impact of BookTok on collections; challenges to 2SLGBTQ+ collections ; ebook licensing; ebook pricing; accessible collections for users with physical disabilities; accessible collections for users with invisible disabilities; "just in time"/demand-driven acquisitions; climate change and collections and research data collections. *CIiCM* also demonstrates the power and potential of open education and open pedagogy. Arising from a need to move beyond disposable assignments (Wiley, 2013) and also in recognition of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ *Framework for Information Literacy* *for Higher Education* (ACRL, 2016), the book demonstrates the role students can play as contributors to scholarly discussions and resources. *Contemporary Issues in Collection Management* had its genesis in the in person class LIS 531 Collection Management from the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta in the Fall 2022 semester. While the Collections Management class served as the spring board for the book, all of the authors here have had to contribute their own voluntary labour outside of the classroom to further developing their work for *CIiCM*.
