This Open Educational Resource, “Cases on Social Issues: For Class Discussion” includes valuable cases on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion for student use. The critical events portrayed in the cases are realistic and emotional, and feature the experiences of under-represented and marginalized people. These thoughtful, contemporary cases pose ethical dilemmas about social issues that encourage post-secondary students and instructors to have stimulating, inclusive, and compassionate discussions. Inspired by input from post-secondary students and authored by people usually under-represented in education material, this resource is designed for upper-level undergraduate or graduate students in the humanities, social sciences, business, healthcare, science, agriculture, environmental studies, law and more. Each case is supplemented with modifiable discussion prompts, notes for teaching strategy, and a short reading list. This resource is a work in progress.

CAAL-CBPA Strategic Plan: Goal 6.3 Administer an OER Development Grants Program for educators in the region.
The Council of Atlantic Academic Libraries (CAAL)<https://caul-cbua.ca/> is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2022 AtlanticOER Development Grants<https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca/grants> (@AtlanticOER<https://twitter.com/AtlanticOER>). AtlanticOER Development Grants are intended to encourage and support educators in the Atlantic Region in the adaptation, adoption, creation, and curation of open educational resources (OER), and to increase access to course materials for students. Each grant is for up to $2,000 and is awarded to individuals, departments, groups, or institutions in the Atlantic Provinces to help achieve the following objectives:
* Support the creation or adaptation of open textbooks and ancillary materials, such as PowerPoint slides, quiz banks, images, and other digital study or interactive aids;
* Create a variety of OERs developed for use by educators and students in credit-bearing courses;
* Establish supportive events for the development of content for OERs, such as sprints (a collaborative in-person or virtual event to create or adapt an open textbook or ancillary resources); or
* Distribute funds to maximize direct benefit to a wide range of student learners and inquiry across a diversity of disciplines

Open education is grounded in Western understandings of ownership, protocol, and accessibility. Often open education has a goal of making all knowledges available for all peoples. Within Canadian copyright law is tension with Indigenous knowledges and Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The open education community must carefully consider Indigenous knowledges and self-determination, which are deeply rooted in community-defined ethics and protocols and do not fit into ordinary academic contexts. This session will explore some of the concerns around open educational resources (OER) and Indigenous knowledges while using Indigenous worldviews to better understand how Indigenous knowledges can be respectfully incorporated into OER.

Kayla Lar-Son is of Métis and Ukranian settler ancestry, originally from Treaty Six territory, Tofield, Alberta. She currently resides on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. At UBC Kayla is the Indigenous programs and services librarian at the Xwi7xwa Library and the program manager librarian for the Indigitization program. Kayla is also a co-host of masinahikan iskwêwak: the Book Women Podcast.

2022-2023 cohort are now open! The SPARC Open Education Leadership Program
is an intensive professional development program designed to empower
academic professionals with the knowledge, skills, and connections to lead
successful open education initiatives that benefit students. The program is
open to all academic professionals with open education
responsibilities—including instructional designers, project coordinators,
and other related roles. We are excited to continue this program for a
sixth cohort, and look forward to working with more exceptional open
education advocates in the coming year.

May 20th. We are pleased to offer candidates from SPARC member institutions

What is the Open Education Leadership Program?
The SPARC Open Education Leadership Program is an intensive, two-semester
professional development program to empower open education advocates with
the knowledge, skills, and connections to lead successful open education
initiatives that benefit students.

Participate in an intensive, semester-long online course during the fall
to gain comprehensive knowledge of open education, stakeholder engagement,
and how to design an initiative on campus.

Plan and execute a capstone project during the spring that has an impact
on open education locally and that contributes back to the broader movement.

Develop a vibrant community of practice among a cohort of peers, and
grow as a leader through mentorship support.

Attend the Open Education Conference

guidance to make the most of the experience and networking.
Who should apply?

Eligible candidates must be employed at a higher education institution,
consortium or related organization in the U.S. or Canada, or at one of
SPARC’s international members. Candidates from SPARC member institutions
will receive special consideration and a tuition discount.

The program is open to all academic professionals with open
education-related responsibilities, including library professionals,
instructional designers, project coordinators and related roles. Student
leaders are also welcome to apply.

Candidates should be prepared for a significant time commitment (6-8
hours per week for online coursework in the fall, average 5 hours per week
for capstone work in the spring) and have the support of their institution
and/or supervisor to participate.
Tuition
Tuition is inclusive of both semesters, and covers all costs except
attendance at the Open Education Conference (virtual). Institutions are
expected to sponsor tuition on behalf of the accepted applicant, and will
be asked to sign a standard enrollment agreement.
SPARC Member Rate: $1,995 USD / $2,495 CAD
Non-Member Rate: $2,995 USD or $3,995 CAD
SPARC recognizes that all institutions are facing budget pressures due to
COVID-19 and has worked to reduce costs as much as possible. The 2022-23
tuition rates reflect a more than 20% discount over pre-COVID rates.
Tuition discount
SPARC offers tuition discounts to support the participation of candidates
who would increase the diversity of the cohort. Candidates eligible to
apply for tuition discounts include:

Hello All
A new report has been published by Achieving the Dream and SRI Education. This study addresses the urgent need to better understand how the use of OER can support educational equity, particularly in educational settings that serve historically marginalized student populations.
The report identifies five dimensions of open education and culturally responsive teaching:
* Study agency and ownership, or the extent to which the course and positions students as leaders of their learning
* Inclusive content, or how the instructor brings in diverse perspectives and tailors the content to students’ backgrounds
* Collaborative knowledge generation, or how students apply/develop new theories or contribute to “renewable” or generative assignments.
* Critical consciousness, or how the instructor provides students with real-world assignments, decolonizes the curriculum, and addresses power imbalances
* Classroom culture, or how the instructor cultivates strong relationships and an inclusive environment
The study is based on interviews with faculty and administrators, student focus groups, and course observations at eight community colleges, and is a careful examination of teaching practice among committed OER users and technology-oriented faculty members.

Hi all.
A colleague and I are developing a Sustainability Fellowship at USask that will include the fellows:
* Learning about course design using the UN SDGs and open pedagogy
* Creating a resource for other educators on how to integrate the SDGs into their own course design and teaching
* Teaching a class where they will integrate one or more of the SDGs, hopefully including open pedagogy
* Supporting and advising their departmental / college colleagues to do the same
We have modules in our course evaluation system for OER and for sustainability, but not for open pedagogy. Does anyone have or know of questions for student evaluations of the inclusion of open pedagogy in a course?
